MAT 113 Course Level Assessment Critical Thinking Assignment Part 2
Spring 2014 SLO 1, 2, 3, 4
Arielle Basel MAT 113-105 Due: 04/06/14
1. Explanation within the problem statement. What are you supposed to do? To accomplish this, classify the problem that is asked of you and describe your plan of action. The problem at hand is to identify the transformations in graphs 1-4. My plan is to translate each transformation in to mathematical terms, while explaining how I came to my conclusion as to what happened in each graph and why it has become the function that it is.
2. Evidence of the problem question. MAT 113 Course Level Assessment Critical Thinking Assignment Part 2 Spring 2014 SLO 1, 2, 3, 4 What information are you given in the directions? What information do you know from the problem statement? To accomplish this, describe what you are given in the problem statement. I am given the directions to explain each transformation, identify the algebraic function that goes along with it, and explain how I came to every conclusion.
3. Assumptions from the problem statement. In general, what do you know about transformations? To accomplish this, identify all the properties you learned about transformations. In general, I know that functions can shift vertically up and down and horizontally left to right. I know they can reflect over the x and y axis. They can also stretch and shrink vertically and horizontally.
4. Your position explaining the thought process you used to reach your conclusions. How did you reach your conclusion? What did you consider about the information given in the problem? What specific evidence led you to your conclusion(s)? To accomplish this, apply the general rules you explained in #3 to describe what is happening to the given transformed graphs and how you determined each graphs corresponding algebraic functions. Explain your thought process for each of the transformed graphs. Graph One: I believe this graph has shifted vertically down 5 making it a negative downward shift and right 6, making it a negative horizontal shift. I realized this by first moving the graph down 5 and then over 6 to the position that it ended at. Graph Two: I believe this graph has reflexed over the x-axis and then the y-axis and then has moved up 4 units. I can tell this because I reflected it over the x-axis and then the y-axis to make it look like the same shape/position of the graph and then it needed to move up 4 units in order for it to be the same. Since it has been reflected over both axis, it makes it a negative constant and negative x. Graph Three: This graph has been reflected over the x-axis making it a negative constant, or first number. It was then shrunk a half of a unit and moved right 4 units. This makes the 4 negative since it has been moved right. Graph Four: This graph has reflected over the x-axis making it a negative first number. It was then moved right 4 making it a negative number. Then it was moved up 4 units making it a positive four. Finally it was stretched taller by 2 units making it have a 2 in the front of the equation.
5. Conclusions reached regarding the final answer. Type the algebraic expression you found for each of the transformed graphs. To accomplish this, combine all the parts above to arrive at a consistent, reasonable, and appropriate solution, check your computations and units, and make sure that you display your solution with proper mathematical form. Graph 1: f(x-5)-6 Graph 2: -f(-x)+4
Graph 3: -1/2f(x-4) Graph 4: -2f(x-4)+4
I, Arielle Basel, completed this assignment on my own. The only resources I used/consulted were the class notes, textbook, Part 1 of this assignment, and my MAT 113 instructor. Failure to include this statement with my name will result in a grade of 0 for this assignment.
