School of Information Technology

DI108 Project

Project Due: by 4pm Friday of Week 13

Worth 30% of overall assessment.

This is an individual assessment.

As the technology is moving so fast, make use of this project to develop your own life long learning
skills, which include research, understanding and developing knowledge, problem solving,
implementing and creativity skills. You are encouraged to explore materials out of the REFERENCE
list provided.

Take note that you are unable to submit this assignment through LMS, you have to submit your work
in a DVD/CD.

The submission should be placed securely inside a folder (including any DVD/CD) with the signed
cover sheet. Submissions should be legible and typed.

Make sure you test your DVD/CD in another computer (not the same computer you used to
create the DVD/CD) to verify that the content can be read. If the submitted DVD/CD is not
readable by your tutor, you may get 0 mark for this project.

Avoid submitting in USB as it may be too small and could drop out from the folder.

Make sure you have a back up for your submission.

You are encouraged to discuss with your tutor on what you are going to develop.

Late submissions will incur a 5% penalty for each days delay, unless a prior extension due to illness
or some other serious unforeseen event is obtained.

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

You will need to do substantial research and self-learning before you can complete the project.
Start today and discuss how you are going to address the requirements of the project.

SOFTWARE ALLOWED TO BE USED:

There is no limitation of what software you can use. However, you will need to state all the
software you are using in the project in your project documentations. The following are only a
list of software tools you may want to explore:
o Expression Web
o Dreamweaver
o Flash
o GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The following describes the project in detail.

1. The project is to create a set of at least 10 related web pages from scratch with links to at
least 5 other related pages not created by you (i.e. URLs), i.e. you have to create 10 pages and in
these 10 pages created, you have to link to 5 external pages (created by someone).
2. The relationship between the pages you create and the links that you include is an overall topic
(theme) of your choice. Your pages will demonstrate a range of target audiences with the top
level pages designed for general appeal and lower level pages appealing to a more specialised
audience.
3. The project report (see below) is to be a link from your projects first page.
4. Your assessment is restricted to 8 Mb. There are two reasons for this restriction. First, it is a
valuable skill to be able to compress your components and reduce download time for viewers to
a minimum. Second, any web server has limited space.
5. You can submit as many pages as it takes (within reason) to cover your topic of interest.
However, you are advised to concentrate on 10 quality pages rather than 30 mundane ones.
Quality pages would include the following:
A consistent look and feel throughout your pages.
Appropriate and aesthetic use of fonts, font sizes and colours for your project theme.
Appropriate and logical placing of links, graphics and other components within text.
Navigation techniques that are intuitive and user friendly.
Well-spaced layout, use of space, and easy to read.
Minimal or no scrolling to see all the content on a page.
Minimal-sized graphic and other component files so that pages do not take long to load.
Avoidance of components and content that is likely to be irritating, offending or too
distracting to users.
6. Out of the 10 pages, at least 2 of the pages have to include interactive or dynamic feature.
Examples of interactive or dynamic features are response form, flash, e-commerce facilities,
password protected area, image rollovers, animation etc.
7. You are expected to optimise at least 2 of the pages for mobile devices.

The following describes the project criteria.

1. You are expected to include text and graphics.
2. Your project must not contain any copyright material unless you have permission, and all
graphics or any other multimedia material used must be referenced. This may be done using a
tooltip, at the bottom of the page or on a separate reference page (this page cannot be counted as
one of the 10 required pages).
3. You may also include any of the other components of Multimedia, e.g. sound, video, animation,
as long as it fits within the size restriction of 8Mb.
4. You may use any text editor or web authoring tool to create your pages.
5. You may use frames.
6. You may use forms.
7. You have to use CSS when creating the pages.
8. You may use a Flash introductory page.
9. You must attempt to comply with W3C Web Accessibility Priority 1 (Level A).
10. You have to test it with at least 2 browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox).

If you would like to get feedback from your tutor about your project, you are encourage to prepare
the Project Objectives, Design (ie storyboards), and Navigation chart to your tutor. Send these to your
tutor by week 9. Anything submitted later than week 9 will not receive any feedback. Each of the
components is explained below.

Project Objectives

Consist of the following:
The project objectives (around 500 words). In addressing the objectives you should answer the
following questions:
(a) who will be your target audience?
(b) what is the aim of the project, e.g. to inform, to entertain, to educate, etc?
(c) what is the message you want to convey to your viewers, e.g. to relax, to take action, to
change lifestyle, etc.
(d) anything else which is specific to your project topic

This can be completed in MS Word. You can save as Web Page format when link to your website in
the final submission.
Design storyboards

Produce a storyboard of all your web pages. The objective of the plan is to show information about
each web page within the system of pages. A storyboard must be completed for each web page. The
storyboards must be computer-drawn in PowerPoint or Word. You can save as Web Page format when
link to your website in the final submission.

Navigation chart

The objective of the navigation chart is to show each web page within the system of pages. The
navigation diagram should show the navigation that is possible within the system of pages. Show this
with one and two headed arrows. It should indicate the title of each page along with the filename
which contains the page. The navigation chart must be computer-drawn in PowerPoint or Word. You
can save as Web Page format when link to your website in the final submission.

Final Submission Requirements

Your submission will include 5 parts:

1. Assessment cover sheet (found at LMS)
2. Project report
3. Design storyboard (see description above)
4. Navigation chart (see description above)
5. The project the website

Copy all the files relating to your project in a DVD/CD remember to copy all the media files
used
Do not store any unrelated files in the DVD/CD

Project Report

In addition to your project (web pages), you will need to write a report in XHTML or HTML about
your project. You can also write your report in MS Word and save as Web Page format. The report is
NOT counted as one of your 10 pages. Your report will be included in your submission and linked
from the first page of your project. Your report will include the following:

Project objectives (see description before)
Software tools used
Borrowed features
Self-assessment

Project objectives

See description before.

Software tools used

State all the software tools used in creating the webpages in your project.

Borrowed features

If you use any features that have come from somewhere else, you must acknowledge the source of the
material. If you have been given permission to use any copyright material, you must include the
written permission here (usually the email). You will be given credit for:
finding the code
making sure that it is legal to use it
using it appropriately within your project
integrating it into your project.

In your report, indicate which material has been borrowed and how you have complied with copyright
law. Some suggestions on referencing, and thus complying with copyright law, are:

1. A reference page. This page can not be counted as one of your 15 pages. You could list
your references this way:
Graphics:
index.html, graphic1.png, http://www.
anotherpage.html, graphic1.jpg, http://www
anotherpage.html, graphic2.gif, http://www
Audio
index.html, audio1.wav, http://www

2. Another way is to link the component to the actual URL where it came from.

3. Or you could link the component to the actual item in your reference page (e.g. <a href=
referencepage.html#reference1></a> and that particular item on your reference page
would be named with a <a id=reference1 name= reference1></a> tag.

Self-assessment

This should include the following:
List all the problems that you found with your work and could not fix because of time or other
reasons. This will include both design and implementation problems. You must do a final test
of your work.
Indicate that you comply with all the requirements of the project, including XHTML and
doctype used, W3C accessibility compliance (copy and paste the table from
http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/full-checklist.html to indicate your compliance
with accessibility). This accessibility table needs to be incorporated into your report.
Indicate your own assessment of the quality of your work by using some criteria. You can use
those criteria you have found in Tutorial 1.
List down the two pages that have been optimised for mobile devices.
Test the project on at least two different web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer and Firefox). If
you encoutered any problem when displaying on any browsers you have tested, highlight here.
