Overview of WDM
Overview of WDM
With the development of telecommunication, the requirements of the
transmission capacity and service categories are becoming higher &
higher.
Under this background, WDM technology emerged. WDM
technology uses a single pair of fiber to transmit and receive multiple
wavelengths and hence increases transmission capacity and bandwidth
and reduces cost of laying down additional fibers.

What is WDM??
What is WDM??
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology uses multiple
wavelengths of light to transmit information over a single fiber optic cable.
Each wavelength is a channel.
WDM assigns incoming optical signals into specific wavelengths of light
(or lambdas).
This multiplexing allows to broadcast on different wavelengths without
interfering with each other.
WDM carries each input signal independently of the others. This means
that each channel has its own dedicated bandwidth; all signals arrive at
the same time .

WDM LINK
WDM LINK
In fiber-optic communications, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is
a technology which multiplexes multiple optical carrier signals on a single
optical fiber by using different wavelengths (Lambdas) of laser light to
carry different signals.

Difference Between WDM, CWDM & DWDM
Difference Between WDM, CWDM & DWDM
WDM is the most cost effective solution to fiber congestion allowing
for 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 fiber gains combining 1310nm, 1550nm & 1490nm
wavelengths on a single fiber.
CWDM allows for a cost effective solution for short fiber spans. With
the 20nm spacing, CWDM can be implemented inexpensively gaining
up to 18 to 1 capacity on an existing fiber.
Where high capacity or long span lengths are required, the DWDM
solution is the preferred method for gaining fiber capacity. With its
high-tolerance lasers optimized in the 1550nm window (for lower
loss), the DWDM systems are an ideal solution for more demanding
networks.
2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 7 2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 7
WDM CLASSIFICATION
WDM CLASSIFICATION
WDM Classification is based on the Channel spacing
between 2 Wave lengths
Channel spacing > 200GHz is called WDM
Channel spacing > 100 GHz is called CWDM
Channel spacing < 100GHz is called DWDM
Channel spacing < 25GHz is called UDWDM
100 GHz is equal to 0.8 nm
2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 8 2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 8
Advantages of WDM,CWDM & DWDM
Advantages of WDM,CWDM & DWDM
Two-channel WDM (and three channel) can be used to quickly and
simply add an additional (or two additional) wavelengths. It is very
simple to install and turn up and very inexpensive.
CWDM can simply and quickly add up to 18 additional wavelengths
on ITU standard frequencies. It is ideal for moderately growing cross-
sections of lengths up to 100km. Since the wavelengths are spaced
20nm apart less expensive lasers can be used resulting in a very low-
cost, moderate capacity solution.
DWDM offers a very high-capacity, long haul solution for higher-
growth cross-sections that may need to span greater distances. A
DWDM system can be placed for a relatively low initial first cost and
channels (wavelengths) easily added as growth occurs. EDFA
Amplification in conjunction with dispersion management can extend
the reach of the system up to 1000 of kms.
Why DWDM?
2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 9 2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 9
Resilient Features of DWDM
Resilient Features of DWDM
Amplification of all the wavelengths at once without first converting them to
electrical signals.
The ability to carry signals of different speeds and types simultaneously
and transparently over the fiber (protocol and bit rate independence).
We can combine up to 160 wavelengths and transmitting them
simultaneously onto a single fiber to be separated at the far end.
DWDM uses wavelength spacing very fine and requires the use of lasers
with very tight tolerance and stability. (which is approx. >100Ghz in WDM)
The DWDM wavelength band is from roughly 1530nm to 1565nm. This is
the band in which the erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) comes under
picture.
2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 10 2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 10
Why DWDM??
Why DWDM??
DWDM increases the capacity of embedded fiber by first assigning
incoming Optical signals to specific frequencies within a designated
frequency band and then multiplexing the resulting signals out onto one
fiber.
The ability to provide potentially unlimited transmission, Capacity is the
most obvious advantage of DWDM technology. The current investment in
fiber plant can not only be preserved, but optimized by a factor of at least
40. As demands change, more capacity can be added, either by simple
equipment upgrades or by increasing the number of lambdas on the fiber,
without expensive upgrades. Capacity can be obtained for the cost of the
equipment, and existing fiber plant investment is retained.
Why DWDM?
2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 11 2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 11
Basic Structure of DWDM
Basic Structure of DWDM
The figure illustrates the functionality of a multichannel DWDM
transmission system when various 10 Gbps signals are fed to optical
transmission modules.
2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 12 2009 Wipro Ltd - Confidential 12
The optical output signals are converted to defined wavelengths in the
1550 nm window via wavelength transponders.
An optical DWDM coupler (multiplexer) then bunches these optical
signals together on one fiber and forwards them as a multiplexed signal to
an optical fiber amplifier (OFA).
Generally w.r.t. technology every 50 km we require an ILA and after every
300 km, we require an OADM site. Also it depends on the customer traffic
requirement.

Hence, to convert the Supervisory wavelength from 1630nm to 1510 nm,
OSFM (Filter Module) is replaced by a set of cards (WCA & CSM) that
converts the wavelength from 1630nm to 1510 nm.
WCA card increases the supervisory threshold to 5db.
WCA is a 1510nm card while 1CSM is an interface card that acts as an

The most common OFA in use is the EDFA.
This is a piece of optical fiber doped with Erbium ions (Er3+).
Optical amplifier has 2 main elements: the optical fiber that is doped with Erbium, and
the Amplifier. When a laser pump is used to energize the erbium with light at a specific
wavelength, erbium acts as a gain medium that amplifies the incoming optical signal.
Radiation from a powerful pump laser outside the data wavelength range is coupled
into this fiber resulting in an amplification of the data signal.
