Question 1

(a) Figure Q1 shows the layout of one floor of an seven-storey precast building. The
shear walls, A, B, C and D indicated are all of equal thickness and manufactured
using the same concrete strength and amount of reinforcement. Calculate the reaction
in each shear wall. The floor diaphragm is subjected to an ultimate horizontal
uniformly distributed load of 4.5 kN/m.
[13 Marks]

(b) If wall B is omitted, recalculate the reaction in Wall A, C and D. Comment on the
findings and the effectiveness of this new arrangement.
[9 Marks]

(c) If Wall C is omitted and the length of Wall B is increased to 5 m, without further
calculations suggest where Wall B should be located, justifying your choice of
location.

Question 2

Five column to foundation connections are shown in Fig Q2(a) to (e). Review them in
relation to various design and performance criteria and select statements which are
true.

Indicate your answers in your answer script as follows:

Question 2(a) 1, 3, 5, 7
if you think 1, 3, 5 and 7 are CORRECT for the Column to Foundation connection
shown in Figure Q2 (a).

1. Quick and easy erection. 2. Difficult to erect.
3. The bolts at the corner prevent corner
bars in column from being welded to
the base plate.
4. Easy to tighten bolts at the corner.
5. The joint have full moment capacity 6. Limited moment capacity
7. Connection is concealed and
protected from corrosion
8. Corrosion will be a problem.

Question 3

(a) The reinforcement details of a precast reinforced concrete beam are shown in Fig. Q-
1(a). The main reinforcement comprises 6 no. T32 bars at mid span, reducing to 5 no.
T25 bars near the supports. Shear reinforcement is T12 bars. Cover to shear
reinforcement is 40 mm. Use f
cu
= 50 MPa and f
y
= 500 MPa. Calculate the maximum
bending moment of resistance of the beam at the midspan using the equivalent
rectangular stress block as per CP65, BS8110 or EC2.

Question 3 contd

(b) Figure Q3(b) shows two beam to column connections. Sketch the free body diagram of
the forces acting on the connection, indicating the forces on the connection and bolts, and
the compressive stresses and forces acting on both beams. In a separate diagram sketch
the cracks that could form at the various locations of the connection.

Question 4

(a) The precast column BD shown in Figure Q4(a) carries a precast beam cantilevering on
either side. Select the type of connection you would use at B. Based on the type of
connection selected sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the two
loading cases as follows:
Load case I: Beam AB loaded with 1.0 dead load and Beam BC loaded with 1.4
dead load and 1.6 live load
Load case II: Beams AB and BC loaded with 1.4 dead load and 1.6 live load.
You may assume a column size of 350 mm x 350 mm. Assume a beam depth of 350
mm. The dead load (including self weight of the beams) and live load are 20 kN/m and
30 kN/m respectively. Indicate the values of shear force and bending moment you would
use to design the connection.

Question 4 contd

(b) The precast U-shaped wall element is to be lifted as shown using the two lifting schemes
as shown in Fig. Q4 (b). Briefly list the loading to be taken into account during lifting,
e.g. mould suction and impact allowance. Compare the two lifting schemes and indicate
where possible flexural cracks would occur in the precast unit during lifting. Suggest
another scheme of lifting the precast wall element.
