Fred and Amanda Abelare both graduates of Indiana University where Fred earned a degree in dentistryand Amanda
a degree in elementary education. During their university years many valuable friendships were madeandtwo special
relationships were developed.
One special relationship which developed duringcollege was their personal relationship withChrist. Christwas a part
of the Abel's formative years. As children both attended Roman Catholic services and parochial schools. While at
Indiana University they learned the basics about Christ and He became their personal Lord, Savior and Friend. It was
at l.U. that they first sensed the desire to pour themselves out for Christ as cross cultural missionaries.
The other special relationship which began during college, was theirs. They met, fell in love and married while at
Indiana University.
The desire to serve as missionaries lead the Abels to varied short term mission activities in Haiti and Southern Africa.
One other the outcomes of these experiences was the choice to pursue long term service in Zimbabwe, Africa.
The Abels arrived in Zimbabwe in early 1989, Fred opened a dental clinic at Mashoko Christian Hospital. Amanda
began to teach at Mashoko Christian High School. Their ministry activities expanded to include preaching and
teaching in village churches. Other activities included leading the high school boy's and girl's fellowships, facilitating
the construction of church buildings, support and oversight of three area ministers as well as local church leader's
conferences and regional monthly revivals. By 1994, ail of these areas of ministry had made the transition into local
Zimbabwean leadership, THE MASTER'S HANDS MINISTRIES continues to encourage the leaders of these
ministries and financially support the dental clinic and staff, the three area ministers, the leaders meetings, revivals and
the construction of church buildings.
Fred and Amanda's three children, Nicholas Nyasha ('90), Elizabeth Tariro ('92), and Katherine Tinashe ('94) were
all bom in Zimbabwe, The Abels call Avon, Indiana home when they return to the states for furlough.
In early 1994 Fred and Amanda felt led to pioneer new areas of ministry in Cambodia, The Abel's arrived in Phnom
Penh, Cambodia in Januaryof 1995, Their ministry activities includeteaching and preachingin local churches, and
assisting five Cambodian Christians attending an evangelical Bible School in Phnom Penh, Fred works with a
Christian relief and development organization, World Concern. His responsibilities include developing and
implementing oral health care programs with the Royal government of Cambodia's Ministry of Health.
Fred and Amanda feel this is a time for growth in their understanding of the Khmer language and culture and also to
survey the country for future ministryopportunities, Cambodia has been shattered by generation of warfare and
oppression, both physical and spiritual. Pray they will see, understand and passionately desireto do Christ's plans
for strengthening the Church in Cambodia. Pray also that they will grow in showing the love of Christ to the
Cambodian people in a soul winning way.
YES, I want to know more about the work Fred and Amanda Abel are doing in Cambodia and Zimbabwe.
