Tour around School Campus
Students will practice giving and taking oral
directions and actively illustrate a map by finding
certain items on a treasure hunt that will lead back
to the classroom. They will tour the school and
observe the rules of different areas of school, and
their personal responsibilities when in those areas.
Students will walk outside to identify the address
and the name of their school.

Mr. Naftali (Mahmouds father, Syrian
Refugee)
Mr. Naftali will share asked to share with the class
the story of how his family lived in Syria before the
civil war and why he has brought Mahmoud and
the rest of his family here to America. He will share
with us food that they eat in Syria, games the
children like to play, and what kind of clothes they
wear. He will be asked to share his own personal
stories from his childhood and compare them with
some stories the students and Mahmoud might
have.

Virtual Field Trip Investigating the
First Thanksgiving

Students can explore a mixture of primary sources,
videos explaining the first interactions between
native Americans and English colonists. There are
short videos and audio clips for students to
watch/listen to better understand why people may
move from one location to another. Students can
view what life was like in 1621 for both the colonists
and the native Americans point of views to see the
difference in their dress, stories, communities,
culture, etc.

Students will explore Alaska through a variety of
colorful pictures of the landscape, the people, the
towns, and satellite views. Students can identify the
differences and similarities in communities and
people here in Las Vegas and in Alaska.

History Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort
Students will visit the Mormon fort which was the first
permanent non-native settlement in the Las Vegas
Valley. Students will take an educational tour of
the museum and fort grounds and observe the
artifacts to learn about the settlers contributions to
the founding of the local community. Students can
also build dreamcatchers and paper boats to race
down the stream which is adds an appealing
hands-on learning experience with souvenirs to
bring back.

Small Business Owner (Local
Restaurant Rosatis)
My close family friend and owner of the local
Rosatis will come in to present to the class a short
run-down on the economics behind running a
business. He will also cover how its important for
the class as consumers to know how to manage
their income and make the right choices on
expenses by knowing the difference between
wants and needs. He will use real life examples
linked with small pastries for the children to eat to
teach them supply and demand, and trading.

Virtual Tour of the White House

This virtual tour of the White House in our nations
capital would be used to teach the students a little
about American history through the dcor and art.
The tour is interactive and lets students click on
areas of the White House that they would be
interested in seeing google gigapixel views of as
well. Students can also get a gist of where the
President and his staff do their work and what kind
of work they do with the video series offered on the
site.

Students can navigate the various parts of the
interactive tour which include online exhibits,
interactive maps, historical paintings, citizenship
quiz, and a video conversation with Thomas
Jefferson about politics, elections, and presidency.
There are also many games that can be used as
supplemental material for lessons or the field trip
that involve the use of content important
vocabulary.

1. Explain which field trip you are most excited about.
The field trip I would be most excited about would be the one to the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort. I
have never heard of the Mormon fort and its history as the first non-native settlement, it would be
awesome to see where the town Ive lived in for the past 8 years started so many years ago and how
they survived in such a barren desert. I have always had dreamcatchers in my room since I was
younger so going on a field trip where the students get to make one and learn the significance of
them to native American culture would be so nostalgic.

2. What challenges did you run into during this assignment?
The challenges I ran into during this assignment were finding good field trips for the primary grades
because many of the standards for those grades are too simple to use certain field trips for. The
concepts taught in many of the field trips I found were better suited for intermediate grade levels but
I did my best to find ones appropriate for younger audiences that would still be engaging enough to
keep them interested more than a normal lesson.
