SpectrAA Base software
User interface: Features Varians innovative worksheet concept for data display. Analytical results are presented in a
spreadsheet format of samples (rows) and elements/wavelengths (columns). Each worksheet cell provides
the concentration or absorbance (intensity) result for each sample and element result with a simple click of
the mouse. Datalog displays the history of events including instrument parameters used, all analytical
results and any software messages.
Methods and sequences: Entry of the element symbol recalls recommended method parameters (including recommended
temperature program for furnace methods). Method search facility. Measure up to 999 randomly selected
samples for up to 30 methods. Analytical method Cookbook information available for each element.
Programmable delay before start of any method for system stabilization. Optional tube condition or
tube clean facility at start of each furnace method. First measurement at start of sequence can be either
Calibration Zero blank, Calibration, Reslope or solution. Pause autorun at any time and restart from
any method/sample. Interrupt autorun for measurement of any element/sample combination without
pausing the autorun using Random Sample function. Options to store signal graphics during analysis.
Sequence completion options include control over lamps, flame and alarm.
On-line cookbook: Analytical methods cookbook information displayed for each method in the Method window.
Includes typical calibration graph and list of alternative wavelengths with comparative sensitivities and
any other analytical recommendations.
SRM Auto-optimization: Surface Response Methodology (SRM) auto-optimization routine can be applied to optimize graphite
furnace parameters for any selected elements. The SRM Wizard models the absorbance as a function of the
ashing and atomization temperatures and sets the recommended optimum parameters into the method.
Measurement modes: Absorption or flame emission using PROMT, Integration, Integrate Repeat, peak height or area, furnace
PROMT height or area. Pre-read delay variable from 0-999 secs. Up to 20 replicates with read time from

specified minimum reading. Different number of replicates can be selected for samples and standards.
Sampling modes: Supports manual or autosampling with flame, furnace and vapor operation.
Pre-emptive sampling: Allows the software to calculate the time required for sampling and reading when using flame
autosampling. When enabled, the software will move the probe to the next sample while a reading is in
progress. The reading is completed using the remaining solution in the transfer line. This reduces the
pre-read delay, improving the productivity of flame analyses by up to 15 %.
Smart Rinse: When enabled, the software will monitor the absorbance signal during a rinse until it falls below the user
defined minimum absorbance, or the rinse time has elapsed. Once the min. absorbance value is reached,
the next sample is automatically presented. Smart Rinse automatically optimizes the rinse times, eliminating
contamination and improving sample throughput when using flame autosampling.
SIPS support: Supports both single pump SIPS-10 or dual pump SIPS-20 Sample Introduction Pump Systems.
Weight and volume correction: Optional during run. Also allows correction for pre-analysis dilutions. Correction factors may
be imported in ASCII format.
Internal standard correction: Corrections can be applied on-line in Fast Sequential mode to improve precision and accuracy by correcting
for physical differences, sample preparation errors or long term drift. Program the system to monitor the
absorbance of a selected internal standard analyte and apply corrections to all elements included in that
measurement. Requires optional PRO software.

to 11 tubes; SPS2 supports up to 10 tubes) or 29 mm O.D. centrifuge tubes (SPS3 supports up to 6 tubes;
SPS2 supports up to 5 tubes). Any sample rack can also be used for standards. SPS series are supplied
complete with 60 position sample racks for 16 mm O.D. test tubes (SPS3 is supplied with 3 racks; SPS2 is
supplied with 2 racks). SPS series are compatible with low cost, autoclavable polypropylene sample racks.
The Custom Racks Wizard enables you to handle your own rack types. Probe contamination is eliminated
with the integral peristaltic pump (optional on the SPS2) which provides flow through rinsing of the probe.
SPS3 includes variable pump speed control. SpectrAA software provides a visual representation of the
layout of all standards, samples and QC solutions defined in the sample racks.
Traveling rinse: Traveling Rinse option for the SPS3 provides improved productivity. With the Traveling Rinse, the rinse
station is built into the tip of the probe, allowing external and internal rinsing of the probe as it is drawn up
from the solution. This ensures the most rapid rinse out possible, improving sample throughput.
Sampler cover: An optional environmental enclosure is available for the SPS series. This can be purged, minimizing sample
contamination from airborne contaminants or can be connected to an exhaust outlet, enabling removal of
any corrosive or toxic fumes during sampling.
Dilution and sample preparation: On-line diluter available for the SPS3 (factory fitted option) for pre-mixing of samples prior to sampling,
or on-line over-range sample dilution. SpectrAA software automatically and serially dilutes the samples
until the analyte result is in range. Racks may be dedicated to empty dilution tubes or empty tubes may be
placed in the sample racks.
Optional Roboprep software enhances dilution capabilities with off-line sample dilution and preparation
of multi-element standards and reagent addition.
Diluter features precision 20 mL syringe with Teflon holding coil. Dispenses 0.02-125 mL with total dilution
volume of 125 mL. Maximum dilution ratio of 1:200. Smart Mixing ensures homogeneity without splashing.
Programmable syringe speed, rinse volume and mixing period. Typical error for a 1 in 20 dilution to a total
volume of 20 mL <2.0 %. Optional Sample Premix capability enables solutions prone to settling to be
automatically mixed prior to sampling for measurement.
On-line calibration and dilution: Single pump SIPS-10 and dual pump SIPS-20 provide on-line multi-point calibration for flame AA from a
single bulk standard. Immediate dilution of over range samples with Smart Rinse to eliminate memory
effects. SIPS-20 totally automates flame standard addition analyses, adds modifiers, spikes samples on-line
and introduces internal standard for on-line correction in Fast Sequential mode.
Enhanced flame sensitivity: ACT-80 Atom Concentrator Tube increases sensitivity of flame AA by 2-3 times for a number
of air/acetylene elements.
Lower detection limits: UltrAA lamps are high intensity boosted discharge lamps, which can be used instead of conventional hollow
cathode lamps. Emission intensity is 5 times higher, and sensitivity is increased by up to 40 %. UltrAA lamps
use a separate boost discharge within the lamp, powered by a separate control module (either external
or factory fitted internal supply). This can power 2 lamps simultaneously. Fixed boost current eliminates
need for optimization.

development. Tube-CAM also captures still images or records videos during analysis.
Furnace viewing and exhaust: The furnace viewing and exhaust option mounts on the rear of the sample compartment. When connected
to an exhaust system, this removes fumes produced during furnace operation at source. Features two
LEDs and mirror to assist tube and sampler alignment and improve viewing with Tube-CAM. Connects to
instrument accessories port. Interlock inhibits furnace operation if mirror is exposed.
