well as how and why the climate changes
throughout the U.S. It will cover pages 6-9
in the Houghton Mifflin 5
th
Grade Social
Studies textbook.

United States using maps and map
elements
G5.5.6 Derive geographic information from
photographs, maps, graphs, books, and
technological resources.

Bring 5 vocab index
cards for each student,
make sure
SMARTboard is
calibrated with a map
of the US ready to pull
up.

This is a lesson that will help students
develop and refresh their map skills by
reviewing maps and their contents by
making one of the school together as a
class by going on a map walk. This is
strategy 7 in the text Language Arts and
Social Studies pages 48-51
G5.5.4 Construct maps, graphs, and charts
to display information about human and
physical features in the United States.
G5.5.1 Identify and locate major
geographic features in Nevada and the
United States using maps and map
elements.
G5.5.3 Describe purposes for different
types of maps and globes, i.e.,
topographical, political, physical.

Have labeled physical
US map ready on
SMARTboard. Bring
clipboards for partners.
Bring Grid paper.
Make sure halls will be
clear, weather is nice
enough to walk
outside.

This lesson will require students to look at two
maps of the same area from different time
periods and focus on the differences and
changes. Students will report the differences
and reasons behind them. Activity is on pages
180-183 in the Integrating Language Arts and
Social Studies text.

Make enough map/
data sheet copies for
the whole class. Select
comparison images for
warm-up activity

Students will review basic features of a
map like the map title, compass rose, map
legend, map scale, and inset map.
Students will also use the map to answer
questions specific to political and physical
maps.

This lesson will involve a quick review of
map concepts and political/physical maps
and their uses. The second half of the
lesson will involve different assessments
that will gauge student understanding of
the map concepts covered throughout the
week.

lesson. Make
copies of
political/physical
map test. Write
