Saami Mittens
The Saami are indigeonous European
people that live in the northernmost areas
of the Scandanavian countries. Beth will share with
us their lively mitten knitting
tradition. Well spend 9 class
hours on the project. Most knitters will fnd
that they are able to complete one
mitten and make a start
on the second mitten.
Learn the special details of mitten construction
of the nomadic Saami peoples, by
knitting a mitten in multiple colors, circularly on
double pointed needles. Make a three color braided
cast-on, create the classic afterthought
thumb (without a gusset), work different
bands of patterning, and the
pointed tip shaping at the end of the mitten. Some
of the motifs will require three yarns to be
worked within one round. A simple fnger
braiding technique will be demonstrated for
the traditional cord. Handling multiple
yarns and designing will be discussed.
Skill Level: Must be profcient with
double point needles, Magic Loop, or
working with two circulars. Stranded
color knitting experience helpful.
Supply List:

Norwegian Purl
The Norwegian Purl, a variation
of the conventional
Continental purl, is noted for its
superior tension
control, and ease of
execution. The yarn always stays behind the work,
making ribbing a breeze and two-
color textured knitting a pleasure. A
swatch will be knitted in class to practice this
technique and its applications:
Proper tensioning of the yarn, the conventional Continental
purl and knit stitches, the Norwegian purl, purl garter stitch,
ribbing with the Norwegian purl on the
right side and on the wrong side, the
Scandinavian method of working with two yarns in the left
hand (knitting, purling, and weaving the foats) on the right
side and the wrong side of the work, as well as corrugated
ribbing on the right side and the wrong side of the work.
Well spend 3 hours Sunday
afternoon learning Norwegian Purl.
Skill Level: All. It is helpful to have
the ability to knit Continentalworking
yarn in the left handbut it is not
mandatory.
