COMMON MALAYSIAN ERRORS

In Malaysian English, many words and phrases are used in a way that is not easily
understood in the rest of the world.
Although the examples in this section are often heard in informal conversations, they are
best avoided in formal speech and writing.
Many of the examples break the accepted rules of Standard English grammar while some
are likely to cause misunderstanding when used with non-Malaysian Speakers of English.

1. NOUNS USED DIFFERENTLY IN MALAYSIAN AND STANDARD ENGLISH

MALAYSIAN ENGLISH STANDARD ENGLISH
1. This word has ten alphabets.

2. I waited for the bus at the bus stand.

3. I need an office chop.

4. His mother went to do the marketing.

2. COUNTABLE USE OF UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

1. He gave me an advice.

4. He packed his clothings for his trip.

5. He bought some equipments this week.

6. Inspector Tan has discovered a new
evidence.

8. I would like to order some fruits for dessert.

9. There are too many furnitures here.

10. That shop stocks a full range of computer
hardwares.

7. MISUSE OF PHRASAL VERBS
