I attended a Messer seminar that was recently performed at Ferris State University, and decided to follow up on possible job
opportunities in your company. I found an engineering position opening, listed as Building Systems Group Engineer. After seeing the
duties and responsibilities, I felt that my personal and professional experience made me an ideal candidate for this position.
The job description lists the key responsibilities the ability to manage subcontractors while surveying and cost estimating mechanical
and electrical work. These were all requirements of my Senior Design Project, which was to design an HVAC system. The final HVAC
system was design based on the air conditioning system of a vehicle, created externally from the car itself. The system was designed
around the ability to measure different attributes of the entire system (volume flow rate, rate of thermal expansion, etc.) while allowing
students to observe and record data from the HVAC system. While certain elements of the system could be constructed by me,
elements such as welding were essentially contracted out to independent shops and businesses. This required appropriate cost
estimates and management to ensure what I needed done was done both on time and on the expected budget, and to make proper
adjustments when necessary. The process of both budgeting and procuring the needed equipment was an excellent test of both people
skills and money management. The final system is still used and available at Ferris State Universitys automotive lab.
My mechanical and electrical experience begins many years before I even attended college. I worked with my father on automotive
repair even back to the age of 15, but I had the added benefit of my father being an instructor for General Motors and a seminar
designer for AC Delco. He designed classes around several automotive subjects, including the introduction of the Cadillac Catera (now
the CTS), the Duramax Diesel, and the retrofit of R-12 to R-134a refrigerant in the A/C systems of modern vehicles. When I became
older, not only was this information given to me, but I began to help design and work with AC Delco in this process. This included
creating, proofreading, and ultimately helping instructors deliver these seminars. I was able to turn these skills into a job as an
Automotive Lab Technician at the Baker College Center for Transportation and Technology. The job not only required me to know and
maintain mechanical and electrical testing equipment, but also instruct students on the proper use of the equipment.

While browsing the Dow Chemical website recently, a job posting had become available for a Mechanical Engineer
position with a specialty in HVAC. This immediately caught my attention due to my near completion of a Bachelor in
Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology and my extensive history of both working with and designing HVAC
systems.
The job description lists the first key responsibility as the ability to do HVAC load calculations, selecting proper system
and equipment, equipment procurement, and creating a control systems sequence of operations. These were all
requirements of my Senior Design Project, which was to design an HVAC system. The final HVAC system was design
based on the air conditioning system of a vehicle, created externally from the car itself. The system was designed around
the ability to measure different attributes of the entire system (volume flow rate, rate of thermal expansion, etc.) while
allowing students to observe and record data from the HVAC system. Several of the classes that were required to make
the extensive calculations were completed with 4.00 GPAs. The process of both budgeting and procuring the needed
equipment was an excellent test of both people skills and money management. The final system is still used and available
at Ferris State Universitys automotive lab.
