Dear Friend of Alexander Hamilton,

The Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society and the Nevis Historical and Conservation
Society request your assistance to help achieve a very important goal: to have Alexander
Hamilton officially named a National Hero of Nevis, where he was born in the Caribbean
and spent his early youth.

The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society is submitting an application to the
Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis to officially bestow this honor on Hamilton. Your
support of this worthy endeavor is critical! While Hamilton is widely acknowledged as a
great son of Nevis, official recognition of this fact would greatly benefit the people of
Nevis and give Hamilton an honor that he richly deserves. For this reason, we ask you to
join us in signing the attached petition. Here are the recommended instructions for doing
so:

1. Please download or save the attached petition (pages 2 and 3 of this document);

2. Add your name and address at the top of the petition before printing it (you may
choose to print the petition on your letterhead);

3. At the bottom of the petition, print your name, add your signature, and date the
petition;

4. If possible, scan the letter and e-mail it as an attachment directly to Evelyn Henville,
Executive Director of the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society,
at evelyn53@aol.com to ensure that we meet the application deadline of May 15;

5. If preferred, send the signed original petition by US mail to:

Dear Prime Minister Douglas,

I am writing in support of the following petition to name Alexander Hamilton a National
Hero of Nevis.


Petition to Name Alexander Hamilton a National Hero of Nevis

Whereas, Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis and the site of his birth is
marked by the Alexander Hamilton Museum and the nearby Nevis Heritage Centre that
celebrates his life and accomplishments; and,

Whereas, Alexander Hamilton spent his formative years on Nevis, which shaped the
character and morals of a young man who became a leading Founding Father of the
United States of America; and,

Whereas, shortly after he moved from the Caribbean to America, Alexander Hamilton
embraced the American revolutionary movement and joined the Continental Army,
serving courageously as a soldier and as a trusted aide-de-camp to George Washington;
and,

Whereas, Alexander Hamilton was a leading force in assembling the Constitutional
Convention, arguing for a strong central government, and successfully promoting
ratification of the U.S. Constitution; and,

Whereas, Alexander Hamilton began learning about finance and trade in the Caribbean
and later, as the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, outlined and implemented a
powerful economic vision for America which put America on a sound financial footing
and on the path to economic prosperity, a vision which people in many nations around the
world still admire and strive toward; and,

Whereas, Alexander Hamilton opposed slavery throughout his life, actively promoted
manumission, vigorously argued for racial equality long before most other founding
fathers, and supported education for blacks including the establishment of the African
Free School in Manhattan, N.Y.; and,

Whereas, Alexander Hamilton is an exceptional role model worthy of emulation by
young people in St. Kitts and Nevis, in the United States, and around the world, because
of his strong moral values, his devotion to liberty and justice, his perseverance in the face
of adversity, his loyalty to friends and family, his powerful work ethic, and his concern
and care for those in need; and,

Whereas, elevating Alexander Hamilton to the status of a National Hero of Nevis will
encourage Nevisian children to learn about him at a young age, to take pride in him as a
native son of their homeland, and to believe that they too can overcome difficulties and
reach great heights if they strive to improve themselves and rely on their own
determination and capabilities; and,

Whereas, elevating Alexander Hamilton to the status of a National Hero of Nevis will
strengthen the bonds between St. Kitts and Nevis & the United States, and deepen the
interest of North Americans and people around the world in visiting Hamiltons
birthplace and meeting the people of Nevis in order to better understand the origin of
Hamiltons strength of character;
