sources of information available in the school library.

C. Basic Information:
Grade Level: first grade
Time to Complete this Lesson: 50 minutes
Groupings:
Whole group discussions, video on public libraries
Whole group, walk to the school library
I ndependent for assessment, scavenger hunt worksheet

D. Materials:
1 scavenger hunt worksheet per student
attached to bottom of lesson plan


1 pencil and clipboard for each student
(bring to the library)

F. Vocabulary
I nformation: supply of information

Library: a place where books, magazines, and other material are available for people
to use or borrow
G. Procedure:
1. Refer to Smartboard for video on school library tour

Ask:
a) students if they visit the public library
b) what they see in the library
c) what they do in the library


Introduce the key vocabulary words:
1) Information 2) Library


Explain:
The school library rules.

Group discussion
Ask students to repeat the school library rules.

Explain:
The lesson worksheet. Each student will independently look for the 9 resources on the
worksheet, checking off the ones they found, read, explored, used, or identified in the library.


Assessment:
What will you use to measure student understanding?
Group discussion:
Students will gather around the lecture table in the library and answer questions form the
librarian about the library rules, sources of information, and what new things theyve learned.
Independent assessment:
Each student will complete the scavenger hunt worksheet.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.
Using the worksheet will show if the students are able to identify the nine different sources of
information they found in the library.
H. Closure:
Students will ask the librarian questions. Students without a library card will be issued one.
Each student will check out one book and share next week with the class on their experiences
using the school library.

1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?
The easiest part of this lesson will be the group discussion library school rules that will be
posted in the library as a resource.
2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?
The most challenging part of this lesson will be explaining the difference between using the
school library and using the public library.
3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?
We will explore the hallways of the school looking for sources of information.
4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?
We will continue to visit the school library, choosing one source of information on the
worksheet, and use the source to complete future projects.
5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?
I will keep this lesson the same as planned. The library provides great sources of
information for all students to use.
6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?
The most difficult part of writing this lesson was incorporating Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesdays lessons into a lesson on providing sources of information.
