Dave and Becky Altman Central Africa Mission P.O. Box 223 Eiiettsvilie. IN. 47429 Mission Services Indiana Regional Center 2600 Rockford Lane Rokomo, In 47902 News Item; Anniversaries: Dave and Becky Altman began their eleventh year with the Eiiettsvilie Christian Church, Eiiettsvilie, In., July 17th. Missions: Dave and Becky (Nice) Altman have become recruits to the Zimbabwe Christian College, Harare, Zimbabwe. The Altmans recently began their 11th year with the Eiiettsvilie Christian Church, Eiiettsvilie, In., which will be their sponsoring church. The family (including the four children) spent the summer of 1986 in Zimbabwe. Dave taught at the college and the family served both the school and the local church. The Altmans were invited to return to the college where Dave will assume both teaching and administration responsibilities and the family will have an active role in the college life and the church. The older children, Beth & Bill, will continue college here in the States. Lisa and Danny will accompany their parents to Africa. The Altmans plan on leaving in January. 1988. They are available for speaking engagements for Missions Rallies, Faith Promises, and Sunday services. Churches interested in supporting this work may contact them at: Central Africa Mission, Dave &Becky Altman, P.O. Box 223, Eiiettsvilie, In. 47429 DflVE flLTinfln FflmiLY ZimBflBWE CHHISTIfln COLLEGE CEBTHflL flFRICfl mission / In October, 1985. the elders of the Ellettsville Christian Church ulleied rny larnily and rne a Uirec monlii sabbatical leave to Leach in the Zimbabwe Christian College, Harare, Zimbabwe. The intitial invitation came from Brother Jack Pcnnington, veteran missionary to Zimbabwe and Principal of the Zimbabwe Christian College. Brother Pennington approached our elders who, in turn, approached my wife and me with the invitation to teach in Africa. Needless to say, it took a very short period of time for the Altmans to make a decision, Plans began to develop rapidly in the following months. The Ellettsville Christian Church opened a special account for our trip and an offering was taken in the spring to cover our expenses. The Lord provided through this congregation's love for missions, in May, 1986, we left the States for the "dark" continent and spent three wonderful months in Zimbabwe. Each of the six Altmans had specific tasks and goals for the summer. We were changed for life! /^Before we left Africa, Brother Pennington extended,.an,invitation to jus to return to Zimbabwe and assume responsibiTitles ' in /administration and teaching. After our return we spent three months, in prayer over this decision, Many factors had to be studied and weighed. We were in our tenth year with the Ellettsville Christian Church. We were happy in the church and in the community. Our children were raised here and this was home. Our two older children (Beth &Bill) would have to remain in the States to complete their college education. We would not see our parents and other family members for several years. On and on the list of considerations went. in November, 1986, the Penningtons visited our home while on furlough. We talked and prayed at length about the ministry at the Zimbabwe Christian College. We realized that it was treasonable and wise to make the move to Afica. We had been / prepared for the task through many years in various ministries in I the States. Our ten years at Ellettsville completed that preparation. Our conclusion was, "We must go." / . .... W.e-^p!an. to.-.leaye for Zim.babwg in January, 1988, the Lord willing. Between now and our departure we will be engaged in continuing our ministry at the Ellettsville Christian Church and securing support for the mission work. The Ellettsville Christian Church, where we begin our eleventh year July, 198'7, is . our sponsoring church. This missions-minded congregation has encouraged us every step of the way in our decision and plans for Zimbabwe. Jack Pennington, present Principal of the Zimbabwe Christian College, stated in a letter to the Elders of the Ellettsville Christian Church; "We would consider it a blessing if the Lord was to open the door for them (the Altmans) to return and work with the college.-.." In a letter to area churches the Ellettsville Elders said: "We, the Elders support and encourage Dave Altman and his family in their service to the Zimbabwe Christian College in Harare, Zimbabwe. We request your prayer, encouragement and financial support for this mission work." We sense the urgency in returning to Zimbabwe as soon as possible in order to continue the work of teaching and leading. Our hope and prayer is that the days of evangelism will continue to flourish in Zimbabwe. We are available to meet with Missions Committees, Elders, and Ministers of churches desiring to expand their mission outreach. That is the-waywe felt when the summer months were over. We looked back on two weeks of Church camp at Hilltop Christian Assembly, seven Vacation Bible Schools, the North American Christian Convention, one week-long seminar, and several speaking engagements at churches. Beth. Bill, and I were waiting until Bill graduated before we joined them. Our family had never been separated this way. so it was a very interesting time for all of us. We were excited, but apprehensive also. As we took Dave and the two younger children to the airport we were all busy getting our last words said to each other. Lisa had avery specially message for me. She said. "Mom. don't forget to feed my bird and water^ him." 1hurriedly answered. "Oh. don't worry, we won't forget." Lisa had received the bird as a gift from a friend and Chirpy was very important to her. She had often mentioned to me at home that 1 must not forget this task. Well. Beth. Bill, and 1 went on home and got busy with . graduation, our own packing, grandparents coming, etc.. and. sure jj enough, one day 1looked atthe cage and there was Chirpy lying lifeless ([ on the bottom of the cage. My heart sank. How could 1 possibly have let this happen when 1knew how much Lisa loved her bird? My little girl was clear on the other side of the world and the least 1 could have done was to feed and water her bird. That night 1went to prayer meeting and as 1 entered the building one of my friends said. "Well. Becky, how are you doing?" 1 just burst into tears and told her how terrible 1 felt. 1 decided 1 couldn't tell Lisa about the bird on the phone so 1 would wait until 1 got there to break the bad news. Dave called to ask us to bring some items and Lisa got on the phone. Of course, she repeated her instructions to me to be sure and take care of the bird. Needless to say. I felt like a real loser. When we got to Zimbabwe 1told Lisa what had happened and promised to replace her pet with another one when we returned home. The next spring, around April. 1 was preparing a talk for a ladies' group at the Southside Christian Church in filoomington. Ind.. and was considering all the events of our trip to Africa, our decision to return, and the many scriptures that had influenced our decision. 1 read again the familiar story of Jesus telling His disciples good-bye as He prepared to make the long journey home to be with His Father. As 1 was contemplating all of these things a tremendoi^paiailej^f events came tomy heart andmind. As 1rememberld'iiie oira 1 cdncTudSd there were two reasons why Lisa chose this as the last request to make of me: first, because of the love she had for the bird, it was vitally important to her that 1 fulfill her request; and secondly, because she knew me well enough to know it was the one thing 1 just might forget to do. Then 1 thought of what Jesus said to His disciples before He ascended into \ Heaven: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy; Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything 1 have commanded you. And surely 1 am with 1 you always, to the very end of the age." Athought struck me full force. Could Jesus have chosen this as His last request of us for the same two / reasons that Lisa chose her last request? Did He say it because it was / extremely important to Him because of the great love He has for all / people of the world, and did He also know us well enough to know this is / the one thing we might neglect to do? There is a whole world of people needing to be fed the Word of God. the L^ood news of Jesus, and if we don't feed them they will end just like /Y/Chirpy-lifeless and with no hope for anything else. When Ithink of how"^ ^/\ awful I felt when I failed Lisa, how much worse will we Christians feel il ' we don't share the Life-giver with those who are lost? COLLEGE UPDATE We received a letter from Marcia Kay Thompson on September 15 stating that the newc1assf<X)m"^uilding is coming along pretty well. She said, The outside of the classrooms are done and they are ready to start plastering inside. Jp iass has helped JackjPennington) with the electrical work and has done s^e in tKe" church building." The building will have ll\ree classrooms which will be a great asset to the collegeT^Sffifremodeling will be done in the main building to increase the number of students we will be able to have enrolled. ACC0UNTA91LIT7 The Bible states .in Hebrews 13:17, "Obey your leaders, and submit to tbem; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this wouldbe unprofitable for you." Over the past several months much discussion has centered on the mishandling of God's funds through lack of accountability. For every ministry that fails in this area j there are hundreds that ij willingly submit to authority. We will be held accountable by the Eldership of the Ellettsville Christian Church. Reports will continually be given to them by both us and our forwarding agents, Mr. and Mrs. A1 Norris. The Elders will also be willing to speak with anyone about these bi-monthly reports. I Both the Altmans and the [Elders feel good about this Iarrangement. We will also be submiting ourselves to the Central Africa Mission Board in Africa and America. / SNROLLMBNT UP ^"When we were in Zimbabwe last year the student body numbered This April three students graduated, twelve new students began in May, which brings thetot^enroHmyit..tq^th^^i^^ When you corisTder ihaf'three years ago less than a dozen men were studying at the college we can just praise God for the growth and vision of the churches of Zimbabwe.
