He then became an Assistant Naval Architect at Sir Joseph W. Isherwood, Naval Architects, London. After this he joined ABS where he held a number of positions from surveyor, principal engineer to manager- all of which involved hull plan approval, hull Rule Research and Development and hull structures surveys. These roles took Robert from London to New York to Rio De Janeiro, where he opened and established the ABS technical office for South America.
