The 2 loci intersect at a point P which represents the complex number w such that

5. A secondary school has 500 girls and 550 boys. A sample of 21 students, representing the
student body, is to present their recommendations to the Principal on the type of food to be
sold in the canteen. Describe how the sample can be chosen using Stratified Sampling.
State an advantage of this method of sampling.
Another suggestion is to simply select 9 girls and 12 boys from the student population to meet
the principal. State the type of sampling method used here and one advantage it has over
Stratified Sampling. [4]
6. (a) There are 9 people including J ohn, Mary and Gary. They are to arrange themselves into
a row of 4 people and a circle of 5 people. Find the number of ways they can arrange
themselves if
(i) there are no restrictions. [2]
(ii) J ohn and Mary are beside each other. [3]
(iii) J ohn, Mary and Gary are part of the group that form a circle and J ohn and Mary
are separated from each other. [2]

7. At an international airport, 3% of the suitcases are slightly damaged and 0.2% are badly
damaged.
(i) A random sample of 10 suitcases is taken. Find the probability that at least two suitcases
are slightly damaged. [3]
(ii) N suitcases are taken at random. Find the least value of N so that the probability that at
most two suitcases are damaged (either slightly or badly) is less than 0.85. [4]
A random sample of 1000 suitcases is taken. Using suitable approximations, find
(iii) the probability that between 28 and 32 (inclusive) suitcases are slightly damaged. [4]
(iv) the probability that at most 4 suitcases are badly damaged. [2]
8. The weight of the contents of a randomly chosen packet of biscuits type A may be taken to
have a normal distribution with mean 260 g and standard deviation 10 g. The weight of the
packaging may be taken to have an independent normal distribution with mean g and
standard deviation o g.
Let C and G be the random variables denoting the weight in g of the contents of a randomly
chosen packet of biscuits type A and the weight in g of the packaging respectively.
(i) Given 075396 . 0 ) 290 ( P = > + G C and 99168 . 0 ) 270 ( P = < G C , show that =15
and o =3 correct to the nearest integer. [4]
The weight in g, of the contents of a randomly chosen packet of biscuits type B may also be
taken to have a normal distribution with mean 180g and standard deviation 15g.
(ii) Find the probability that the difference in weight between the contents of 5 randomly
chosen packets of biscuits type B and thrice the contents of a randomly chosen packet of
biscuits type A is more than 10g. [4]
A random sample of 120 packets of biscuits type B is taken and the mean weight of the contents
is calculated.
(iii) Find the probability of the sample mean to be greater than 182g. [2]
(iv) A hundred such samples, each of 120 packets of biscuits type B, are taken. How many of
these samples would you expect the sample mean to be less than 182g, correct to nearest
integer? [2]

9. (a) A gold coin manufacturer claims that the masses of gold coins he produced have mean
6g and variance 0.64g
2
. If this claim is not rejected at 10% level of significance based
on the mean mass obtained from a random sample of 100 gold coins, between what
values must the mean mass of the 100 gold coins in the sample lie?
State, giving a reason, whether any assumptions about the population are needed in order
for the test to be valid. [5]
(b) The manufacturer used a new coin making machine and claimed that the masses of gold
coins produced by his new machine are not less than 6g. A random sample of 10 gold
coins is taken and the mass, x gram, of each gold coin is summarised as follows:
= 14 ) 4 (x and
= 8 . 106 ) 8 2 (

x .
Find the unbiased estimates of the population mean and variance. [2]
Given that the masses of the gold coins follow a normal distribution, carry out a test at
5% level of significance to determine whether the claim is justified. [4]
Explain, in the context of the question, the meaning of at 5% level of significance. [1]
10. The cost of a spa package charged by Ansasa Spa Resort varies with the duration of the
treatment provided. The resorts brochure gives the following data.
Time in x mins 30 45 60 75 90 105 120 135 150
Cost, $y 90 120 150 175 190 200 205 210 215
(i) Give a sketch of the scatter diagram for the data given and comment on the pattern of
the scatter diagram. [3]
It was thought that the following two models may be appropriate
y
2
=a +bx or y =c +dx
2
where a, b, c and d are constants.
(ii) Find, correct to 4 decimal places, the values of the product moment correlation
coefficient between
(a) x and y
2
(b) x
2
and y [2]
(iii) Use your answers to parts (i) and (ii) to explain which of y
2
=a +bx or y =c +dx
2
is the better model. [2]
(iv) Using the model determined in (iii), estimate the value of y when x =240 to 1 decimal
place. Comment on the reliability of your results. [2]
