Unit: Foreign Policy Unit Time Period: May 8

I. Learning Essentials
1. 7. SOC.9-12.9.1.2 Analyze the transformation of American politics in the late 20th and early
21st centuries including: SOC.9-12.9.1.2.a growth of the conservative movement in national
politics, including the role of Ronald Reagan
2. 8. SOC.9-12.9.2.1 Explain the role of the United States as a super-power in the post-Cold
War world, including advantages, disadvantages, and new challenges (e.g., military missions
in Lebanon, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, and the Gulf War).
3. 9. SOC.9-12.9.2.2 Analyze how the attacks on 9/11 and the response to terrorism have
altered American domestic and international policies (including e.g., the Office of Homeland
Security, Patriot Act, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, role of the United States in the United
Nations, NATO).

students will read two court cases: University of California
v. Bakke and Milliken v. Bradley. Students will summarize
the cases and discuss their rulings. Then, students will
discuss discrimination towards Native Americans, the
disabled, and immigrants.

Class will begin with a formative quiz on 21-4 (Native
Americans). Then, students will review for their test
tomorrow on Chapter 20 and 21-4.

Completed review sheets are due. Students will take
Chapter 20 Test. When finished, students may begin
vocabulary terms for the Foreign Policy Unit and complete
21-1 Reading Guide (Nixon only)

Class will begin with a formative quiz on the vocabulary
terms for the unit: Foreign Policy in the Late 20
th
Century.
Class will review 21-1 Reading Guide regarding Nixon and
will take notes on his policy of dtente and Vietnamization.
Then, students will watch a video regarding dtente.

Class will begin with a formative quiz on the notes from
yesterday. Then, students will also answer questions about
21-1 and 21-3 Reading Guide regarding Fords and Carters
foreign policies. Students will complete the reading guide
and vocabulary terms.

Class will focus on Regans foreign policy, specifically Star
Wars. Students will take notes about the presidents foreign
policy. Finally, class will study a time line conveying the fall
of communism. Questions will follow.

Class will begin with a formative quiz on Reagans foreign
policy. Then, class will receive A New Europe After the
Cold War map and will label the new countries of Europe.
Then, students will receive The Fall of Communism time
line. Students will answer questions using the time line.

5/15/14
Class will review Reagans Strategic Defense Initiative, and
will review Europe after the Cold War. Then, class will
discuss H.W. Bushs Foreign Policy, specifically Tiananmen
Square and the Persian Gulf War. Finally, students will
complete the vocabulary words and study for this quiz
tomorrow.

Class will begin with a Vocabulary Quiz. Then, students
will read 22-2 Reading Guide regarding Reagans and H.W.
Bushs Foreign policy.

Foreign Policy. Then, class will answer questions about
Clintons Foreign Policy. Discussion will include the conflicts
in Eastern Europe, ethnic cleansing, and the Dayton
Accords. Students will read The Dayton Accords and
answer the questions.


Tuesday
5/20/14
Class will review the conflict in Eastern Europe and the
Dayton Accords. Then, class will discuss W. Bushs Foreign

Policy, specifically the War on Terror. Finally, class will
review the Foreign Policy Review Guide and organize their
binders.
Homework: Study for Foreign Policy Test and organize
binders.
