Example 1 Calculate the fugitive emissions* and the stack emissions if the process equipment generates 100 lbm/hr of particulate matter, the hood capture efficiency is 95%, and the collection efficiency of the air pollution control device is 95%. The USEPA defines fugitive emissions as emissions that (1) escape capture by process equipment exhaust hoods; (2) are emitted during material transfer; (3) are emitted to the atmosphere from the source area; and (4) are emitted directly from process equipment.
Example 2: Calculate the fugitive emissions and the stack emissions if the process equipment generates 100 lbm/hr of particulate matter, the hood capture efficiency is 90%, and the collection efficiency of the air pollution control device is 95%.
Example 3: An engineer installs a hood rather than a solid ductwork from a generator set operating on diesel fuel inside the building through the roof to remove the emissions. The engine and generator operating at 348kW in 400seconds produces the emissions in grams shown in the table below. The NOx exhaust concentration is 898ppm in an exhaust flow of 1,500 scfm.

1) In a series of steps show your approach; equations and assumptions required to determine the percentage captured by the hood. No need to work out equations; simply list and show where value for terms comes from. Can you determine the tramp air added and the fugitive loses? What other measurements are needed. 2) Show steps to determine the fuel flow rate in g/min knowing diesel fuel is CH 1.8 (hint balance carbon).

Problem 4 (C&A 1-27) Exhaust gas at 550F and 750mmHg was sampled through EPA Method5 (see Figure 2). Total gas flow through the dry-gas meter was 2.785 cubic meters at 60F and 800mm Hg. During the sampling period, 1.50 grams of particles were collected, as well as 72.0 grams of water in the impingers. a) Calculate the concentration of PM in the stack in g/m^3 at stack conditions. b) The average exhaust velocity is 20m/s and the inside diameter of the stack is 5 meters. What is the daily PM emission rate?
