Calculation of Scholarship Grade Point Average (GPA) for Scholarships

This document explains how to calculate scholarship grade point averages
(GPAs) for students from New Zealand universities who are applying for
University of Aucland scholarships!
A grade point average for scholarship purposes is calculated using"
#! A minimum of $%% points of graded course results over the last two years&
assuming full'time study(
$! )f more than $%% points of courses have *een taen over the two years& all
courses (except +oP courses) must *e counted(
,! )f the last two years of study are not full'time (i!e! less than $%% points in
total) then go *ac semester *y semester& counting all the courses taen
(except +oP courses)& until at least the minimum $%% points are o*tained!
-! Grades are assigned the following numerical values"

A / 3 1 / 4 + / $
A' / 5 1' / - +' / #
6ail grades& including 7N8 (7id not sit) and 7N+ (7id not complete) etc& are
worth %& as are 9ithdrawn courses! 7o not include +oPs (+ertificates of
Proficiency) in the calculation!
4! )n order to calculate a scholarship GPA& each grade is multiplied *y the
num*er of points for that course! The multiplied figures are then summed&
and divided *y the total num*er of points! GPAs must *e reported to three
decimal places! An example is given *elow"

+ourses included in the GPA calculation should *e clearly mared on the
transcript!
here an un!arked thesis is included in the GPA calculation& an
estimated grade must *e o*tained from the department;supervisor
concerned! The estimated grade should *e clearly mared with an asteris&
and italicised where possi*le!

Grade point averages which include an estimated grade should also *e
asterised!
8tudents who are offered scholarships on the *asis of a GPA which includes
an estimated grade will receive an offer conditional upon their achieving at
least a specified minimum GPA! )f& when final results are confirmed& their
GPA falls *elow the reAuired level& the scholarship offer will *e withdrawn!
Students who apply on the basis of overseas "ualifications" The
6aculty should o*tain as much information as possi*le a*out courses and
grades! Please ensure that in arriving at a Grade Point Bstimate (GPB)& the
*est comparative assessment is made! 6urther information a*out calculating
scholarship GPBs is availa*le on the 8cholarships we*site (GPB Assessment
Guidelines)!
GPA calculations will *e scrutinised *y the UniversityCs 8cholarships 8u*'
+ommittee! Applicants may *e disadvantaged if GPA calculations are
incorrect! Any changes to initial GPA calculations will reAuire signing off *y
the 8cholarships 8u*'+ommittee& and will *e denoted as an adjusted GPA!

8taff should adhere to these guidelines as strictly as possi*le( any
divergence should *e explained on the covering page! 6or example& if a
scholarship GPA calculation excludes results that are greater than #% years
old& please Dustify the decision to exclude them!
