The strategic planning committee,
under the leadership of Cyril Stewart, has
just completed nine months of hard work.
The group has sought ongoing input from
the congregation through surveys and
dialogue and provided an update of their
progress at the congregational breakfast
back in February. In the coming weeks,
there will be an audio/video presentation
available that will summarize what has
been discussed and the recommendations they are making.
This will be available very soon and will be sent out electronically.
I want to use this article to summarize some of the highlights.
YOUTH WING RENOVATION
is essentially complete
and looks great. There are
still some nishing touches
being done but the youth are
already using that space and
are very excited about it. I
encourage you to walk down
and see it if you havent
already. A big thanks to Trey
Flowers, Jamie Huling, Nick Small, Ralph Parsons, and to all the
youth and youth parents who have worked hard on this. This
turned out to be a larger project than we originally anticipated
but will serve our youth ministry well in the years to come.
PRESCHOOL RENOVATION is now in the design phase. Justin
and Kirsten Lowe of Centric Architecture are preschool parents
and have been involved with this from the beginning. I am
pleased to announce that we have raised over $500,000 for
this project through a combination of private donors, fundraising
events, and individual donations. The actual construction will
not begin this summer because we have to get the drawings
nalized. This renovation will greatly enhance our preschools
entrance and ofces, and will be timely as we welcome Martha
Duff as our new director this summer. Brick Pavers are available
for $100 to line the walkway of the new entrance. These can be
engraved with the name or names of children who have attended
or are attending the preschool. You can contact Sheila Mathias
in the preschool ofce or go to www.wcps.donationbricks.com
to order one. We are very excited about this renovation.
SOUTH HALL It has become apparent that South Hall is very
crowded. South Hall houses the Nashville Food Project which
has grown considerably, AA on Tuesday and Thursday nights,
Room In the Inn, mission teams, and various other groups and
gatherings from time to time. The WCC Board is considering a
few proposals that would provide a modest addition to South
Hall to alleviate the space crunch. South Hall certainly serves its
purpose as being an outreach hub for our church and we are
proud of all the ministries that happen there on a regular basis.
We want to make sure that each ministry has the space it needs
to operate.
9:30 SERVICE is our largest service on a regular basis and gets
very crowded. Reasons for this include the growing childrens
Sunday School, the relaxed feel, family environment, and the
time of the service. We are forming a group to look at what it
might look like to add an additional service in Drowota Hall on
Sunday morning to provide another worship option. If you are
passionate about being a part of this discussion, please let me
know.
LACK OF PARKING Directly related to the overcrowding at 9:30
is a shortage of parking especially between 10:30 and 11:00
a.m.. We are well aware of this. We also know that if we were to
add a third service on Sunday morning, parking would continue
to be a challenge. Cyril has a group of people looking at various
options which include a weekly shuttle to the Boy Scouts lot,
paving to the north side of the parsonage (by Woodmont Blvd.),
and some other options as well. Its a great problem to have but
there are no quick solutions. Please be patient and know that
we are working diligently on it.
BIG PICTURE The Strategic Planning Committee has also
talked about the big picture as well. There is a desire to keep
South Hall but to consider the future possibility of an addition
on the south end of our building which could house a multi-use
worship space that could also be used for lectures and large
classes as well as some multi use classroom space underneath.
This could potentially be done in the porte cachere area. These
discussions have only been preliminary and will continue to
unfold. Drowota Hall is a very busy space, serving as a worship
space for the Bridge, a gym, a dining hall, etc. There is a lot of
set up and tear down and much demand on the space. There
will be more conversation on this in the future. We believe it
is important that we continue to look down the road and think
about the big picture.
Hopefully this helps give you an idea of what the Strategic
Planning Committee has been talking about and working on this
year. Many of the challenges that we have are good challenges.
Woodmont is a busy place, serving many families and multiple
needs on a daily basis. Again, thank you to those who have made
a commitment to support the operating budget of our church for
another year. Your generosity makes the ministry happen. Let
us all continue to work together to grow as disciples in Seeking
God, Sharing Love, and Serving Others.
Blessings,
Clay

Since my transition into youth ministry
last summer, I have often been asked
what I like about working with middle
and high school students. The greatest
blessing has surely been to see these
students grow in the ways of Christ
and learn to talk about their faith
in a meaningful way. Whether at a
6:30am Bible study or during a casual conversation in the
church hallways, I am continually blown away by just how
profound so many of them have become. These young
women and men help me see the love of Christ in a new
light and understand the Bible in ways I had never even
thought of before.
On Youth Sunday we were blessed to have the
middle and high school students pour their heart, soul,
strength, and mind into worship. While Carla or I would
love to claim any credit, the truth is the service was 100%
planned and led by the youth of our church. The students
selected our theme (Faces of Faith), wrote the sermons,
rehearsed the songs, and explored what the very purpose
of worship is. For this one Sunday, they were so clearly the
Faces of Faith in our church the future leaders of our
congregation and denomination.
What I love about youth ministry, though, is that
each and every week I get to see that they are not only
the future leaders of our church, they are also the current
leaders. They serve on the CREW Board and sit on the
Youth Leadership Cabinet; they plan worship for Youth
Sunday and worship faithfully each week of the year;
they participate in service projects and lend their voice to
planning regional events; they have tender conversations
about tough issues and still learn that we can worship
together. In short, the youth of our church live out our
guiding verse for this year, I Timothy 4:12 Dont let
anyone look down on you because you are young, but set
an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love,
in faith and in purity. I am grateful for the example they set,
for they are truly the faces of our faith!
In Christ,
Trey
Faces of Faith by Trey Flowers
Small groups are an important
part of the church. They help provide
a smaller more intimate community,
which allows one to become more
deeply connected to the church as a
whole. I have been reading Creating
Community, by Andy Stanley and Bill
Willits; they make an obvious but
profound statement saying, people are
cared for best by people who know them best, those with
whom they are walking through life. This line stood out to
me, because this is a large piece of what it means to be part
of a church community and a small group. They go on to
say, care is a by-product of authentic community because
you naturally care for people you know well. You want to
care for those people you know deeply. Caring becomes
easy and takes little effort, because it is something you do
not feel like you need to do, but instead you want to do it.
As summer begins I want to encourage everyone to
grow deeply in your relationships with one another. If you
are already part of a small group think of ways to help
strengthen those relationships, and if you are not part of a
small group think about joining one. If you are looking for
a way to get connected at Woodmont I, would love to help
you nd small group.
Blessings,
Mary Clare Pyron

Title: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Emmaus...
Scripture: Luke 24:13-35
Description: On the Road to Emmaus, the disciples were
so wrapped up in their own sadness that they didnt even
notice they were standing in the presence of Christ. We are
called to open our eyes and see that we are in the midst
of Gods love and goodness. Just as the disciples had their
own eyes opened while taking communion, it is our love
and fellowship shared in the community that truly opens
our eyes to that love and goodness.

Stewardship Thought
Christ has no body now
on earth but yours; no
hands but yours, no feet
but yours. Yours are
the eyes through which
He is to go about doing
good; yours are the
hands with which He is
to bless people now.

with gratitude

What an outpouring of love we experienced with the recent
hospitalization and subsequent loss of our mom, Mary
Eleanor Tomlinson. Te cards, calls, fowers, chocolate, and
visits so perked her up; you made her feel very special. Ten
in her passing you were again so supportive with prayers,
cards, food and even your presence at her celebration on
a very stormy day. We cant imagine going through such an
event without your Woodmont support. We are so grateful.
You have loved her and us very well.
