INTROD9CTION
Congratulations on your choice of the DISCRIMINA!R. his Automatic "ull
Discriminator is a new generation of pulse induction metal detecting instruments.
It is used for locating larger and smaller #$% to &% '()cm * (+cm,- si.ed targets at
greater depths compared to any other con/entional metal detector. he pulse
induction system is de/eloped to automatically retune0 so that changes in the
ground minerali.ation and unwanted ferrous metal targets are eliminated. he
SD1 series Discriminator is a uni2ue combination of technologies that ta3es
ad/antage from other pulse induction detector technologies to create an easy to
use balanced system.
he DISCRIMINA!R wor3s at great depths and ranges by smooth and stable
operation from the control unit in automatic motion mode. arget identification
and discrimination is possible with the (m * (m s2uare 14C coil. 1inpointing is
achie/ed with the smaller ((% round shaft-mounted coil.
:o; does t&e SDP Auto*atic Discri*inator ;ork <
he search coil sends out short magnetic pulses and produces a strong magnetic
field abo/e the ground. he magnetic field induces eddy currents in the metal
ob5ects to be detected. hese currents generate a secondary electromagnetic field0
which flows outward from the target. A portion of this secondary field passes
through the antenna winding. his signal is processed by the electronics and
displayed by a tic3ing rate0 meter response and light indication. he timely
decoupling between the transmitting and recei/ing phases allows the SD1 series
to wor3 with an increased transmitting and recei/ing power.
he magnetometer sensor system senses the magnetism of ferrous fields. 6hen
the independent magnetometer sensor system senses the fields it displays a Red
78D 7ight when a target is ferrous.

DISCRIMINATION
he DISCRIMINA!R 1ulse Induction Metal Detector is actually a Dual
Detector.
Not only is it e2uipped with 1ulse Induction it also has a built-in Magnetometer
sensor system to discriminate out what targets are ferrous. he Magnetometer
sensor system shows Iron #ferrous- targets indicated by a bright Red 78D light.
>y ha/ing this additional detector it allows the user to decide if the found target is
one of interest to reco/er.
C
STANDART DISCRIMINATION SFARC:
#(m * (m Coil-
he loop cable is embedded in 14C tubes and can be assembled
for use or dismantled for transportation easily and 2uic3ly. he concentrated
magnetic field of the coil allows and e*cellent detection range on relati/ely small
metal ob5ects.
argets the si.e of a cash bo* are clearly detected from a distances of C-D feet.
7arger argets li3e a large metal treasure chest can be detected at a range of up to
(= feet or more depending on soil conditions. !ur practical tests ha/e pro/en this
search coil as the best one for treasure hunting with the SD1 Series.
A9TOMATIC MODF
#(m * (m Coil-
he detector retunes automatically to the changes of the ground conditions
#minerali.ation-. ?eeping constant operational height and all the slowly changing
e*ternal electromagnetic fields are not critical for the stable performance of the
SD1 pulse induction system.
R8MIND8RE Automatic Mode is motion detection. he search coil needs be
mo/ed completely through the target area.

D
DFTFCTION RAN0F
heoretically the detection range increases with the increased targetAs si.e0 time in
ground0 until the si.e of the detected ob5ect is double the surface of the search
coil. Smaller coils of appro*imately ((% diameter ha/e a specific range of ob5ects0
which are detected well. Continuous wa/e detectorAs sensiti/ity is better on small
metal targets. Such coils and detectors ha/e reached their limits with a detection
range of appro*imately ( meter. 8normously large amounts of metal would be
necessary to increase their detection range o/er these limits. he search coil of
the pulse induction detectors could be increased to almost any si.e0 so that a large
long ranging magnetic field would be built up. he SD1 series wor3s using a
magnetic field caused by short pulses. he large search coil and the low fre2uency
applied ma3e it capable of penetrating deep into the ground.
An important disad/antage of the other pulse induction detectors is that they are
not capable of identifying whether the target is a ferrous or non-ferrous metal
ob5ect. It is 3nown that some of the latest pulse induction detectors on the mar3et
are ad/ertised to ha/e this capability. >ut for the reliable target identification
these detectors loose about &)F of their detection depth0 and often register the
deep nonferrous targets as being ferrous0 which is absolutely unacceptable for the
serious treasure hunter. he systems operation is strongly influenced by the si.e of
the metal target and itAs aging #o*idation- in the ground. 6ith the SD1 series
Automatic "ull Discriminator we ha/e tried to a/oid all these disad/antages of the
pulse induction systems for treasure hunting.
he DISCRIMINA!R with the (m * (m coil discriminates #currently only
s2uare si.e coils that discriminates- the unwanted ferrous ob5ects no matter their
si.e and aging in the ground in almost all cases. 6hen operated in its
discrimination mode the detector doesnAt loose its detection depth and does not
ma3e the mista3e to count a non-ferrous target as an unwanted ferrous metal. his
unit is /ery operati/e and gi/es a great choice of non-discriminating and
discriminating modes of operation.

Practical use in t&e Non-Discri*inating
*ode of o(eration
Searching with the DISCRIMINA!R detector is easy0 when two
persons bring the standard search coil. !ne of them carries the electronics bo* #at
the opposite to the search coil side and trying to 3eep the electronics bo* as
possibly far from the search coilAs frame-0 watching the indications and ma3ing
ad5ustments during operation. <ou should not carry watches0 belt buc3les or metal
plates in your shoes0 as they could cause false signals if close to the search coil.
6al3 normally0 and if the terrain allows it0 carry the search coil at a lowest
possible and constant le/el operational height o/er the ground.
he small shallow metal ob5ects will produce two pea3s of the tic3ing-rate;meter
deflection. 7ifting the search coil could cut out such small si.ed ob5ects. here are
some trashy areas0 where bringing the coil higher would be ad/antageous. A mid-
si.ed metal ob5ect buried at one meter or so0 will gi/e a /ery clear0 distinguishable
indication. A 7arge metal target deep in the ground will cause a long indication
o/er a larger area than the smaller metal ob5ects.
6ith some practice you may be able to estimate the depth #shallow targets only-0
the si.e and e/en the form of the target detected. he best way of getting
ac2uainted with your detector and its responses to different metal targets is to
locate your buried metal pipes around your home. !f course0 the reaction of the
detector would be much better if the metal targets ha/e been buried in the ground
for a longer period of time #li3e $) to =) yrs-. 6al3 the test area ma3ing sure that
you are passing all the way through the target until the unit is 2uiet again. Ma3e
necessary ad5ustments to your detector0 and tune it carefully away from the
targets. ry to carry the coil +-@% high0 if the terrain allows that. 1ass o/er your
buried utilities. Note the differences between the indications of the targets.
Another method is to create a test field with :Air argets%. <ou create :Air
argets% by placing ferrous and non-ferrous metals directly on top of the ground.
he targets should be @ to () feet apart.
(&
>eing in Automatic Mode0 stop o/er one of your targets. In few seconds the
detector will tune itself to this metal ob5ect. <ouAll then be aware of that through
the tic3ing rate0 which has already become normal0 as set by the manufacturer for
the Automatic Mode. Mo/e aside. 1ass o/er the same target0 this time not
stopping your mo/ement o/er it0 and the detector will register it again. So0 donAt
stop the search coilAs mo/ement o/er a metal target while operating your detector
in Automatic Mode.
8&ile testing t&e detector6 (lease note t&e follo;ingI
- ry to 3eep a constant operational height of the search coil.
- he detector is /ery stable while in its Automatic Mode of operation. SD1
successfully compensates the effects of the changes of the search coilAs
operational height0 and retunes automatically to the changes in the ground
conditions and to the slowly changing e*ternal electromagnetic fields.
- he Discriminator is a typical motion detector. his means that the search coil
should be mo/ed o/er and through the metal target0 if you stop your mo/ement0
then the detector will automatically retune itself and youAll loose the target.
-he loss of depth during the operation in the Automatic Mode could be due to
incorrect tuning of the detector.
(=
Practical use in t&e Discri*inating *ode of o(eration
-In the prepared from your test field add a ferrous utensil with a diameter of =-@%
and bigger0 and at @ B () feet0 some other iron instruments.
-une the detector in the Manual Mode far from any metals0 and after that switch
it to the Automatic Mode of operation0 as pre/iously done. he :Sensiti/ity%
control is on the !"" position. Now passo/er all the targets repeatedly0 mo/ing
with a normal pace. Note0 that the detector gi/es an audio response to all of your
targets in the test field. Iron targets are indicated by the red #ferrous- 78D light on
the intensity meter. his should wor3 most of the time0 it is the magnetometer
which discriminates the ferrous from non-ferrous metals.
-urn the Sensiti/ity control to the MAJ position. 6ait till the red light of
theindicator fades. Switch to A;D position of the toggle switch #full
discrimination-.
-Now pass again repeatedly o/er your sample targets. Note0 that the non-ferrous
plates0 e/en if buried deep in the ground0 will produce a good audio response
without a red light of the indicator.
-he 78D indicator will illuminate on all the remaining iron targets0 no matter
their si.e0 and audio discriminated. he smaller target wonAt produce an audio
response.
-he bigger targets will produce an increasing sound0 when you approach the coil
to them0 followed by a sharp lapse into silence0 together with an illuminating 78D
indicator.
-his mode of operation allows a/oiding the unnecessary digging of the unwanted
ferrous targets. he detector discriminates all the ferrous ob5ects lying in the upper
arable layer of the ground. he discrimination is not affected by the si.e0 the
o*idation and the aging of the ferrous ob5ects within the detection range of the
coil. >ut in case there are ferrous instruments or weapons0 buried together with a
cache of money0 you ris3 missing the cache0 because of the so called :iron shield%
or :mas3%-the discrimination of the ferrous targets oppresses the detectorAs
reaction to the non-ferrous targets. <ou could imitate such a situation0 ma3ing the
following testE
(@
-a3e one of your non-ferrous plates and lea/e it close to one of the ferrous
targets0 #3nife0 gun0 and other ferrous weapons or instruments-0 then pass
repeatedly o/er the couple of targets and note that the detector discriminates the
ferrous target0 as well as the non-ferrous plate. <ou could 3eep this target
arrangement for the test of the ne*t mode of operation.
Switch to the :Semi-discrimination% or middle switch position of the toggle
switch. In this mode of operation all the smaller ferrous ob5ects within the
detection range will be discriminated. he bigger ferrous ob5ects0 which could be
weapons0 instruments0 utensils or iron containers0 hidden together with a hoard0
are registered as non-ferrous targets through detectorAs audio response. At the
same time the 78D indicator prompts the presence of ferrous ob5ect under the
coil. 6ith the toggle switch in the :SA% 1osition0 pass o/er the couple of targets
#ferrous and non-ferrous-0 which you ha/e already arranged. he detector will
produce a clear audio response.
0eneral Notes
Interference
In most of the cases interference is due to magnetic disturbances li3e power lines
and may ma3e detection difficult. Iea/y current cables nearby could cause se/ere
interference. Magnetic effects of soil0 and its high minerali.ation could also cause
interfering signals. o reduce them0 see :field guide% for detail of interference
remo/al operation.
