Introduction Main Research Question: -How does Bangkoks main natural disaster affect the lives of the people?
In the following presentation we are going to talk about the landscape of Bangkok, the demographic of the country, the different natural disaster of Bangkok and how the government would avoid it. Hope you enjoy the presentation!
Where is Bangkok exactly located and what is its climate? Bangkok is located in South Asia and specifically in South Thailand. Bangkok is the capital of Thailand. Unpredicted weather causes many natural disasters like floods. Bangkok has different climates like
Demographics of the country Most of the urban population in Thailand is in Bangkok with a total of 15 to 20 million. There are 4.03 million males and 4.27 females. So, there is a larger population of females than males. In Bangkok the ratio of poor people to rich is more because many work in low salery where they are paid only 1 dollar per day! The life expectancy from male to female is 69/75. The currency that is used in Bangkok is called Baht.
Landscape of Bangkok Bangkok is very polluted one of the most polluted in the world. It is a metropolis defined city as it is a very large and busy city. There are a old styled homes and the buildings were not very built well. 6,355 million people in Bangkok. Bangkok is mostly flat, that is why loads of flooding is going on and as well it is sinking about 1 cm per year. There are hills in Bangkok but farther out of the city. As well there are some mountains for example, the Yod Doi Inthanon which is the highest point of Bangkok.
Types of natural disasters in Bangkok In Bangkok there are many types of Natural disasters but the biggest one is flooding. In Bangkok there are some little tsunamis hitting the coast. There are also some little earthquakes but floods happen the most of the time and they affect the humanity way more.
Main Disaster in Bangkok The main natural disaster in Bangkok is flooding. The flooding is usually caused by heavy rainfall many days in a row, it can even take up to 3 months for high water to rise. Thousands of people have been forced out of the country to safety. The flooding water can be waist height or even higher sometimes. The poor people don't have the chance to make money for a long time, till the factories and jobs get rebuilt and dry which can take months.A business owner Richard Han had to pay 30 million dollars for the damage of his plants and farms.
Philip The pros of flooding is that it kills droughts and also kills insects. Floods fertilizes dirt with silt and it prevents dams. There are many threats that flooding cause. In Bangkok, people are not aware when a flood might occur as floods are very quick to strike. When floods occur, it takes everything that comes in its path. People get highly injured, die and it causes a lot of destruction. Here is one other con that some news reporters had said: On Monday 26th 2011, during the Bangkok flood, News Reporters reported that there were 2 crocodiles found in a carpark and 1 cobra found in a store room. This happened because of the force of the water was high that the crocodiles and cobras could not swim against. This could be very dangerous as they might harm anyone that they encounter with. Pros & Cons in flooding What should the Bangkok government or private businesses do to avoid it? The government and private businesses can and should take many different steps to prevent floods. All the citizens rely mostly on the government to make them feel safe and secure. The Bangkok government has built canals, and constructed new flood walls. It is also creating new flood- retention zones in huge areas of low lying land to prevent disruption. These are some other solutions that we thought the government could do to avoid high flooding and low flooding:
Brenna One of our solutions is preventing deforestation as the trees act as a strong barrier to the stop the water that is entering the rivers that might overflow. The trees also help to retain Solution 1: Preventing Deforestation Building dams would stop flooding as they hold down water. They are mostly used to save and manage water. The Thai government has started to build dams all around Bangkok that would help regulate water. Dams also help control floods by storing excess water. Dams are also especially made because there would mostly be a reservoir behind. There are different types of dams that could be built but we would like to encourage the government or private businesses to build Concrete Gravity Dams. Gravity dams are great because they are able to resist harsh forces such as water pressure or gravity! Solution 2: Building Dams Terracing hillsides would be another great solution because it would stop the high level water from entering the small towns which are located on the hillsides. Solution 3: Terracing Hillsides Another solution to prevent flooding is to build levees to keep a river from flooding. A levee basically an embankment that is built on a rivers edge. Levees act as a strong barrier to keep away water. Levees are very useful for low pressure flooding as it does not let the water overflow and pass through. In a high pressure flood, levees would not be useful as any underwater hurricane could escape from above it. Solution 4: Constructing Levees The Thailand underground and tunneling company has requested the government to build an underground floodway to prevent future flooding in and out the capital. We think that this is a very logical idea because it would be used as a multi service system which would be equipped with hydropower generators. There would be 2 decks. The upper deck would be used for low floodings and the lower deck would be used for high floods. The lower deck would help the water to drain off as the upper deck would be filled up with water. This is an excellent strategy as it keeps all the water stored for a long period of time and would be drained or reused for hydropower generators. Solution 5: Building an underground floodway The government could help everyone not only the rich people. They could also request rescue teams from other countries if Thailand can't save everyone. Especially capturing the crocodiles that got let out into the flood water. Ensuring Safety for the people of Bangkok? Glossary (Humanities terminology that we have used) Floods Dams Resorviers Levees
