The blurry images of my musical counterparts passed as I remained seated,

languid and nervous. The months of memorization and hours of exercises boiled
down to this piano recital, my first recital. I had to perform well, not for myself but
for my teacher, for my family, for Ludwig van Beethoven! Despite the pressure, I
trembled slowly towards the piano.
I look back at my first piano performance and realize that however torturous
the event seemed, it was a memorable and important moment in my life. As a young
pianist, I felt discomfort in performing for audiences. I approached the piano with
reluctance, and

There I sat for hours, playing until my fingers hurt merely for the joy of my parents
and piano teachers. I was young and unable to go out and join a band and I did not
have very many other friends who played instruments so I was on my own. My
teacher tried to get me to play things I enjoyed, but I was embarrassed or maybe
lacked the inspiration to go out and find things to play that I enjoyed.
My quest for piano purpose changed course when I joined Drama 1. In the
classroom was an old, out-of-tune piano that was beckoning me to play. I was at a
crossroads between wanting to play and show my talent and not wanting to play
because I was afraid of what people would say. One day I built up the courage to
walk up and play the instrument and I caught my drama teachers eye. He did not
know that I had such a talent, and soon my friends in the musical theatre class were
telling me that he was bragging about how talented I was! This came as a complete
surprise to me, and I was elated that somebody appreciated my hard work and
dedication. The teacher invited me to play some pieces for an original play our
school was going to perform and I happily agreed. The show was a success and
created a chain reaction of goodness in my life. I am now an active part of the
musical theatre program and have met most of my friends through the program
I have also ceased to take piano lessons now. I thank my teacher for
everything she taught me, but I now choose to continue my musical endeavors
individually. In fact, I recently had the privilege of seeing my musical hero Paul
McCartney in concert, and his perfection inspired me to purchase two volumes of
Beatles and start learning those songs. The Beatles are the best band in the world.
After 8 years with my beloved instrument, I understand the point of learning
how to play an instrument. In the chaotic environment of IB filled with homework,
projects, essays and reports, I often find myself playing Blackbird in order to relax. I
feel most at peace when I am on the piano. The piano provides me with peace of
mind. Chopin, Gershwin, Mozart, McCartney.
Piano has taught me so much over the years. First, it has taught me how to
succeed under pressure. This skill has benefited me in Standardized Testing and in
stressful situations. From a young age, I was responsible for making sure I was
prepared and practiced the piano for my weekly lessons. I probably wont be able to
bring my piano to UF, but I may be able to convince my parents to invest in a
keyboard
