paintin%s have now erroded due to deca( and human inter#erence! 6ost o# the paintin%s narrate 1 depict
stories #rom the 8ataka tales!This kind o# artwork is called mural paintin%s! The rock sur#aces were #irst
chiselled to make them rou%h to hold the paster applied on them! The plaster was %enerall( made o# cla(,
ha(, dun% and lime! The colors used to paint are %enerall( known as 'earth colors' or 've%eta*le colors!'
9arious kinds o# stones, minerals, and plants were used in com*inations to prepare di##erent colors!

accidentall( *( a British .aptain, 8ohn Smith in 1?1>, while on a huntin% expedition! These caves are
dedicated to =ord *uddha! The #ollowers and students o# *uddhism treated these caves as mosoon retreats
where the( could come and stud( a*out the reli%ion! These caves were carved out #rom the ,nd .entur( B.
to the 5th .entur( A3! The caves can *e *asicall( divided into , cate%ories 2 .hait(a Grihas and 9iharas!

monks used to reside!
