1 A local town council of National Town wanted to survey residents of a block of
flats with 72 units to determine if they would like to have lift-upgrading to have
the lifts serve every floor of the block. It was decided to pick a sample of 12
units and interview its occupants.

(a) Describe how a systematic random sample of the 12 units could be
obtained. [2]

An employee decided to number the 72 units of flats as shown below in the
simplified model of the block and choose a systematic sample of 12 units.

Level 12 12 24 36 48 60 72
Level 11 11 23 . 71
Level 10 10 22 . 70
Level 9 9 21 . 69
Level 8 8 20 . 68
Level 7 7 19 . 67
Level 6 6 18 . 66
Level 5 5 17 . 65
Level 4 4 16 . 64
Level 3 3 15 . 63
Level 2 2 14 . 62
Level 1 1 13 25 37 49 61

(b) Explain whether the sample obtained will be representative of the
residents of the block. [2]

2 Eight students (Amanda, Benedict, Cheecheng, Deedee, Esther, Feifei, Garry,
Hiaoqing) decide to catch a movie at Silver Village but are left with only two
rows of seats (with four seats in each row) as shown:

Find the number of ways the eight students can be seated if
(i) Garry and Hiaoqing must sit next to each other. [2]
(ii) Amanda and Benedict must sit on the same row, with Amanda nearer the
toilet. [3]
After the movie, the eight students went for a Laser Quest game of which they
teamed themselves up in one group of 2 and two groups of 3. Find the number of
ways in which they can split themselves into the 3 groups. [2]

3 J eremy decides to attend a Mathematics consolidation program in order to
improve his grades. There are three programs, A, B and C, that he can choose
from.
Based on past records,
due to the availability of the students schedules, a student is equally likely
to attend either program A or B, and is half as likely to attend program C
than A.
the probability that a student obtains a distinction, if A is selected, is 0.80.
the probability that a student obtains a distinction, if B is selected, is 0.75.
the probability that a student obtains a distinction, if C is selected, is 0.70.

Construct a probability tree showing this information. [2]

Calculate the probability that
(i) J eremy obtains a distinction. [1]

(ii) J eremy attends program A, given that he obtains a distinction. [2]

J aslyn attends the consolidation program at the same time as J eremy, and her
choice of program is independent of that of J eremys. Given that both of them are
in the same program, find the probability that exactly one of them obtains a
distinction. [3]

4 In a particular handphone shop, the sales of uPhones and wePhones per week
have independent Poisson distributions with means and 3 respectively.

(i) Given that it is equally likely that the shop will sell either 3 or 5 uPhones
in a week, show that =2 5. [2]

(ii) Find the probability that, in a randomly chosen week, more than 12
handphones are sold. [3]

(iii) Assuming that there are 52 weeks in a year, use a suitable approximation
to find the probability that there are at least 46 weeks during which at most
12 handphones are sold per week. [3]

Explain why the Poisson distribution may not be a good model for the number of
uPhones sold in a year. [1]

5 In this question, you should state clearly the values of the parameters of any
distribution you used in your calculations.

The masses, in grams (g), of Minerva tomatoes and Calmex tomatoes sold in Cool
Storage are normally distributed and independent of one another, with their means
and variances as shown in the table.

Tomato type Mean Mass Variance
Minerva 200 20
Calmex 100 10

(i) Find the probability that the mass of one Minerva tomato weighs more
than twice the mass of one Calmex tomato by more than 10 g. [2]

One Minerva tomato and two Calmex tomatoes are packed together and sold as a
packet. If the difference between the mass of one Minerva tomato and the sum of
masses of two Calmex tomatoes from the packet is more than 10 g, the packet is
rejected.

(ii) Show that the probability that a packet is rejected is 0.114, correct to 3
decimal places. [3]

(iii) The supervisor randomly checks fifty packets. Using a suitable
approximation, calculate the probability that the supervisor rejects more
than 5 packets. [4]

6 The functions f and g are defined by

1
f : e , for ,
x
x x x p ,

2
g: 4 , for , 2 x x x x ,

where p is a positive real constant.

(i) Sketch the graph of y =f(x). [1]
(ii) Show that the least value of
1
ln2
p = , for which the composite function gf
exists. [2]

(iii) Using the value of p in (ii), find gf(x), and state its domain and range.

8 The diagram below shows the graph of f ( ) y x = . It has a minimum point at
(1,3) and cuts the x-axis at the points ( 2,0) and (4,0) . The lines 0 x = , 2 x =

Sketch on separate diagrams, the graphs of

(ii)
2
f ( ) y x = , [3]
(iii)

Show on your diagrams, if any, the equations of the asymptotes and the
coordinates of the stationary points and points of intersection with the axes.

9 The complex number z satisfies the relations 2i 2 z + and Im( ) 1 z .
(i) Illustrate both of these relations on a single Argand diagram. [3]

(ii) Find the complex number z that gives the least value of arg( 4) z . [1]

(iii) Find the exact real values a and b such that

1 1
tan ( ) arg(4 ) 2tan ( ) a z b

, expressing y in terms of x. [3]

(ii) Sketch the graph of the solution found in (i) such that

The region R is rotated through 2 radians about the y-axis. Determine the
volume of the solid obtained, leaving your answer correct to 3 decimal places. [3]
