WHAT: With summer vacation approaching, a time when more teenagers will be driving,
and with Memorial Day marking the beginning of AAAs 100 deadliest days of the
year for U.. teen drivers, schools across the nation are re!enforcing lessons in
driver safety. "o help safeguard youth drivers AT&T is teaming up with New
York State Senator Kathleen A Mar!h"one, So'th /len# 0all# H"1h S!hool,
O(&onnell an$ Aronow"t), Attorne.# at 2aw, and New York State Troo%er# to
educate students on the dangers of te#ting and driving. "he special assembly is
part of the schools annual $ealth %air Day.
&n 0r"$a., Ma. 34th outh 'lens %alls $igh chool students, faculty and staff
will attend a special assembly to learn about the dangers of te#ting while driving.
(amela )ichols from &*+onnell and Aronowit, will discuss the legal ramifications
of te#ting and driving, including the new state law increasing te#ting and driving
violations from three points to five points on a drivers license. )ew -ork tate
"rooper .yle $utter will provide the students with firsthand accounts of te#ting
and driving accidents resulting in serious in/uries or fatalities. An e#ecutive from
A"0" will present an emotional documentary, 1The Last Text which recounts
stories of families and students who have lost loved ones or been involved in
accidents as a result of te#ting while driving.
"he event will culminate with 2en 3ieberman, e#ecutive director and co!founder
of Distracted Operators Risk Casualties (DORCs), who lost his 45 year old son 6van
to a te#ting and driving accident. Lieberma was recently featured in the atioal
media regarding his public crusade to call attention to the dangers of te#ting and
driving.
tudents will also be able to try out an online simulator which provides a safe
environment to e#perience first!hand the dangers of te#ting while driving. A"0"
employees will provide laptops and a wheel and pedal accessory so that the
more than 4,777 students that will be attending the $ealth %air from 89:7a.m.
!4p.m. can try out the online simulator. "his tool is free to the public and
available at !!!"itca!aitsimulator"or#.
;esearch has found that sending or looking at that te#t, tweet, %acebook post or
email from behind the wheel can be deadly. <n fact, studies show that those who
te#t while driving are much more likely to be in a crash and more than =77,777
car crashes and in/uries happen while a driver was te#ting and driving.
A"0", its employees and other supporters are calling on all drivers to go to
www.itcanwait.com to take the no!te#ting!and!driving pledge, and then share
their promise with others via "witter >?itcanwait@ and %acebook. "he pledge effort
is part of the companys public awareness campaign aimed to make te#ting and
driving as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving A especially with young
drivers.
