Introduction

GASCO are enablers of the UAE hydrocarbon value chain with operations of gas plants and
distribution network in line with highest health, safety and environmental standards ensuring
asset integrity, reliability and operational excellence. (Our Identity: GASCO, 2014)
This report focuses on mobile technologies on the daily lives of travelling GASCO employees.
GASCO currently employs over 4,000 people and has various work stations in Abu Dhabi and
the western region.

In the UAE ninety one percent employees used either their own vehicles, a taxi or a chauffeur
to reach the office (Attwood, 2010). Taking this factor into consideration and the impact on
the environment GASCO has its own set of services which the employees can avail.
Currently this system is being upgraded to be made available through m-service as the first
point of contact as compared to request raised through office administrators.

A direct communication channel between the transportation team and the individual is thus
created. This link enables the transportation team to gather information about employees travel
preferences and conduct. The end result is a more attractive transport service for end users, and
hence greater use of GASCO transportation services that are already in place. A highly-utilized
transport system could reduce private car usage and increase driver safety, generating
environmental and economic benefits for GASCO as a whole.

Mobile Technologies in Transportation Sector

Globally people have given importance to their own luxury in choosing the mode of transport
mainly cars to move around in the city. This has produced road congestion, and has had a
damaging effect on the environment. In order to solve this problem, strong car purchasing
restrictions were placed on cities especially in Europe. Alternative solutions included public
transport, carpooling systems etc. This was not an efficient system as most times commuters
found it hard to access information on the timetables of public transport and also inconvenienced
by the additional time spend travelling to workplace. This need drives the advancement of
mobile technologies and is being adopted in many countries as a smooth and sustainable model
for both people and environment.
The following diagram shows us how a smart mobile application can support the daily
transportation needs to the desired workplace in cities (Gorton, 2008).

It is important to understand that the cell phones and Wi-Fi are the key factors that make mobile
technologies in transportation possible.

Impact of Mobile Technologies on GASCO

Personal computers are being replaced with smartphones and tablets. Latest trends in
technologies empowers the business officials, staffs, business partners and customers with
access to business applications and company data made available to them anywhere and at any
time. Whatever the nature of work be it exploration, extraction, refining or transportation,
employees are now are using cell phone or a tablet extensively to access company applications
and data to do their daily jobs. (Emile Trombetti, 2013)
Against this backdrop, recent advances in mobile technologies and services could be harnessed
to improve the attractiveness and efficiency of transportation systems within GASCO. The
overall transportation fleet management can be managed effectively through this m-service. The
following points shows a range of the various services the m-service provides for the

Benefits of Mobile Transportation System at GASCO

The following points highlight the benefits of mobile Transportation Request systems at
GASCO:

1. Improved Information Access
GASCO employees have easy access to company data in order to do their work. With
advancement in technology more and more applications are created due to demand. As
per the below statistics of search engine traffic of Q1 2012 vs Q1 2013, we can see the
doubling of Smartphone and Tablet usage as compared to Traditional (Desktop/Laptop)
usage (Chawla, 2013).

2

New key performance indicators (KPIs) are created that is easily available to all
employees anytime and anywhere. These KPIs can be calculated on daily basis rather
than a weekly or monthly basis done previously. This information along with its
graphical dashboards and reports empowers GASCO employees to make a difference in
the company right from the bottom line.

2. Customer Engagement
Emergent mobile web technology create more reasons and new ways to keep customer
engaged thus increasing the regularity of communication. Service requests can be
monitored and tracked, both by the employee and customer (Forrester Consulting, 2008).
Dashboards perform analysis continuously and generate reports on customer behavior
tendencies which is easily accessible on the mobile.
3

The above diagram depicts the benefits of adopting a data-driven approach which focus
on customised experiences and relationships for both end user and the transportation
(Sawyer, 2013):
Integrate & Understand: The first step is to collect customer information from all current
sources which helps to build a holistic customer approach.

7

Analyze & Discover: The next step is to completely know the different attributes that
donate to customer journey this enables smart management.
Optimize & Act: With the available data new initiatives can be created to optimize and
make sure that customers are getting the right service at the right time continuously.
Execute & Deliver: Maximise customer satisfaction by understanding their needs and
delivering customized service efficiently.

3. Increased Mobile Connectivity
Studies have shown that mobile connectivity is growing rapidly across the world. The
following chart shows that though 60 percent of mobile data traffic is in Western Europe
and the Asia-Pacific region in 2014. But emerging markets in the Middle East and Africa,
having started with comparatively lesser figures, but are growing the fastest (Schwartz,
2010).

4. Higher Profitability

8

Due to the easily available information to all employees at all times, employees can
measure the effects of the organizations cost-saving initiatives and now modify their
efforts to increase profitability. With these readily available facts and figures managers
can also take informed decisions to maximize the targets on cost-saving. (ARTIS
Consulting)

5. Reduced Work Load
Previously at GASCO office administrators had to manually raise transportation requests.
This required a huge amount of workload on them as well more room for errors to recur.
With this current system request are made online and direct communication with the
transportation systems thus providing a quality service accurately without compromising
on speed.

6. Ease of Approval Process for Line Manager/Transportation Team
The transportation team manager have the advantage of approving requests at a faster
pace, track the history, progress, check on the no of approvals and so on. The managers
can also check the status of all its assets at all times with alert options for repairs,
damages and claims.

7. Increased Probability of Approval
The current system at GASCO operates for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. The time it
takes to reach the line manager is reported to take a day after all initial formalities With
the new system in place transportation requests can be approved by the line manager or
transportation team immediately thus increasing the probability of approval by three
times

8. Increased utilization of resources
The current system generates around 400 requests per month. That can be broken down
into approximately 100 requests per week. With the roll-out of mobile services, the
effective utilization of GASCO vehicles can be increased. We can predict this to be
increased by at least 30 percent.

New incentive programs can be launched wherein the line manager can see which of their
fleet have been operational the most and allocate adequate resources promptly.
