CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the background of the study, problems of the study,
purpose of the study, scope and limitation, significance of the study, and the
definitions of the key terms are discussed.
1.1. Background of study
Language as tool of communication is needed since human being is part of
social community. As human being, we learn speak at least one language. Some
experts try to define what the meaning of language is. Homby (!"!# $!!% started
that language is a system of sounds, words, patterns, etc. used by human to
communicate their thoughts and feelings. &urthermore, 'arrol as (uoted by
)amelan (!!*#+% defined language as an arbitrary system of speech sound
which is used interpersonal communication by an aggregation of human beings
and which rather exhausti, ely catalog things, process, and e,ent in the human
en,ironment.
According to &inegan (*++-%, languages ha,e three principle ways to
extend their ,ocabulary. .hese three ways are/ % forming new words from the
existing words and word parts by adding affixes, compounding, shortening,
blending, reduplication process, con, ersion process, and semantic shift process, *%
borrowing from another language, for example, alcohol (Arabic%, boss (0utch%,
piano (Italian%, zebra (1antu%, etc., 2% creating new words from scratch or
in,enting new words, for example, Kodak, quark, zap, etc.
&orming new words from the existing words by adding affixes is a
common way of creating new words in any language especially in 3nglish. Affix
is a morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word.
&romkin, )odman, Hyams (*++2/4"5"+% state that there are four kinds of
affixes. .hey are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and circumfixes. 6refixes occur
before stems or roots (such as il-, dis-, re-%, suffixes after stems or roots (such as
ment, - ness, -ity, etc.%, infixes in the middle of stems or roots (such as abso
7bloomin 7 lutely%, and circumfixes around stems or roots (such as ge 7 liebe 7 t
in 8erman%. .he last two kinds of affixes are not normally found in 3nglish.
)elated to the affixation, some researches were conducted by other
researcher before. .he first, Hilmi 9athofani studied affixation entitled Study on
Grammatical Mistake of Changing ord into !egati"e #ualities $sing %refi&es
Made 'hird Semester Students( In his research, He found the number of mistakes
made by - students in employing negati,e prefixes was :-: mistakes. .he
fre(uent error was in negati,e prefix un-(-+.42;%, which was di,ided into
-+."; of misformation mistake and +.::; of Spelling mistake. .he second,
3mmi Heni,a(*++"% conducted a research on affixation in his thesis entitled
)ffi&ation $sed in the *nglish 'ranslation of Sahih +ukhari by Mukhsin Khan( In
her study, she analy<ed about kinds and process of affixation used in 3nglish
translation of Shahih 1ukhari by 9ukhsin khan. She found only two kinds of
affixation used in her study. .here were prefix and suffix
&rom the definition abo,e, it=s clear that suffix is kind of affix which
attaches after stem or root. .his is the main topic of this research. As Student of
3nglish department, understanding word formation practically or theoretically
become an urgent need in order to prepare them in real acti, ity related to teaching
learning acti, ity. 1ased on the explanation abo,e this study is finally decided to
be conducted entitled >An analysis on suffixation in *++!= thesis abstract by
student=s 3nglish department of ?99@ in order to help the reader to able to
understand and use an appropriate suffix either in changing meaning or part of
speech.
1.2 Stat!nt of Pro"#!
In line with the background of the study described abo,e, the writer tries
to analy<e the suffixes based on the *++!= thesis abstract of student=s 3nglish
department. .he problems of the study are formulated as follow/
. Ahat kinds of suffixes are used in *++!=s thesis abstractB
*. Ahat is a common suffixes used in *++!=s thesis abstractB
2. How is process of suffixation used in *++!=s thesis abstractB
1.$ Pur%os of Study
. .o know kinds of suffixes are used in *++!=s thesis abstractB
*. .o find common suffixes used in *++!=s thesis abstractB
2. .o identify process of suffixation used in *++!=s thesis abstractB
1.& Sco% and '(!(tat(on
.o be well focused, the scope and limitation of the study need to be
clarified. .his study limited only on the analysis of the word, especially on
process of suffixation. .he words being analy<ed are taken from *++!= thesis
abstract by student 3nglish department of ?99.
1.) S(gn(f(cant of t* Study
.he significant of this study is hopefully to gi,e contribution either in
theoretically nor practically. .heoretically means to gi,e some information to
student uni, ersity related to morphology process specially word formation.
6ractically, this study is aimed for students in uni, ersity who deal with the same
research and use it as reference.
1.+ Df(n(t(on of ,y Tr!
. Suffixation/ morphological process whereby a bound morpheme is attached to
the end of a stem.
*. .hesis Abstract/ a brief or condensed statement by the writer, of the essential
ideas of the writer=s work.
