Hemingways Contribution
Many authors have contributed to literature by the many boos they write and the
styles in which they write them in! "rnest Hemingway is one o# the many authors who
have contributed to literature! His novella$ The Old Man and the Sea, is a short story o#
an %ld Man named &antiago$ a #isherman who struggles with a giant marlin #ar out in the
ocean! Hemingways novella is written in a uni'ue way! (t is written using sim)le
language and vocabulary* he also writes his sentences in a much more sim)le style! +hese
two writing techni'ues he uses have made his boo a contribution to literature!
+hroughout this boo$ Hemingway uses a more sim)listic ty)e o# dialogue! +his
gives a more direct and natural )ers)ective about the #isherman! ,or e-am)le$ in his
conversations Hemingway re#rains #rom using .he said/ or .( told him/ a#ter each )erson
s)eas! +his way$ the s)eech becomes more )ersonally or direct to the reader! +he reader
becomes more included in the story without the interru)tion o# clari#ying who said what!
0n e-am)le #rom The Old Man and the Sea is1
.23hat do you have to eat4 the boy ased!
25o$ ( will eat at home* do you want me to mae the #ire4
65o$ ( will mae it later on$ or ( may eat the rice cold!.
0s said be#ore$ the .he said/ )hrases have all been omitted$ giving a more sim)le
)ers)ective to the reader!
Hemingway does not ee) the reader more involved in the storys conversations$
but he also )ur)osely leaves out unnecessary )hrases! His style$ in a way$ is
un)recedented! Many times$ authors choose to use )arenthetical )re)ositional or ad7ective
)hrases into their wor in an e##ort to e-aggerate their imagery into the reader!
Hemingway ee)s it nice and sim)le! ,or e-am)le$ .(magine i# each day a man must try
to ill the moon$ he thought! +he moon runs away! 8ut imagine i# a man each day should
have to try to ill the sun4 3e were born lucy$ he thought/ 9:;<! Hemingway describes
the #ishermans challenge in catching #ish and em)hasi=es his )oint without any use o#
)arenthetical )hrases! He sim)ly uses a di##erent scenario to do so instead! 3ithout
overdoing it$ Hemingway gets his em)hasi=ing done in a sim)le manner! 0nd this ee)s
the story much more coherent!
(t is with these two di##erent styles o# sim)licity and clarity that Hemingway
created his own uni'ue and un)recedented language in literature! 0s com)licated as
creating a language can be$ "rnest Hemingway manages to do so through his sim)le
language writing style$ and thus contributes his language to the wors o# literature and
should de#initely be read!
