PYP 6 NEWS LETTERHOW THE WORLD WORKS 2013-2014

UOI
The first Transdisciplinary
Theme is How the World
Works. It isan inquiry into the
natural world and its laws; the
interaction between the natural
world (physical and biological)
and human societies; how
humans use their understanding
of scientific principles; the
impact of scientific and
technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central Idea
Human curiosity leads to the understanding that Earth is
part of the universe.
Lines of Inquiry
Systems and properties of the universe.
Earths conditions and characteristics which support the
existence of lives.
Technology which aids the study of the universe.

Concepts: Function, Connection, Form
Related Concepts:
Science: Properties, space, systems (solar), technology
advances, theory of origins, climate change.
Language: English procedural writing, reading for
understanding, skimming, note taking/making. Bahasa:
descriptive writing, facts and opinion, visual
presentation (comic) integrated with Visual Arts.

Transdisciplinary skills
Thinking skills
Analysis: find information and interesting facts about
planets and other space objects in our solar system (seeing
the relationships and connections) to show that Earth is
the best place for humans to live, seeing how Earths
position in the solar system can impact natural phenomena.
Application: students will apply their knowledge about
scientific methods to support their study during this unit.
Research skills (scientific research skills)
Formulating questions: create research questions before
they do background research for their scientific
experiment.
Observing: test their hypothesis by doing the experiment
and make an observation about the process of their
scientific experiment.
Recording data (note taking, note making): record the
data that is obtained from their experiment (English).
Organizing data (sorting and categorizing information):
organize data in the form of a chart, table or graphic
organizer.
Interpreting data: analyze the data obtained from the
experiment and draw conclusions.
Presenting research findings: using various media to
communicate the results of the experiment and
demonstrate the scientific experiment using a diorama and
3D models.

Learner Profiles and Attitudes
Inquirer (Curiosity, Independence)
Curiosity: Show curiosity by inquiring about Earth and
aspectsof the solar system.
Independence: conductresearch and scientific
experiments independently.
Thinker (Curiosity, Creativity)
Curiosity: doing the scientific experiment and make a
scientific report based on basic scientific principles.
Creativity: show creativity when finding alternatives
and solutions in the scientific experiment.

Summative assessment task(s):
Students choose one of the natural phenomena derived
from class discussions during the learning. Then, they need
to explain the natural phenomenon with a visual
presentation (diagram, models, IT based, etc.), they
produce a report explaining the impacts of the natural
phenomenon on life.
Summative Task Criteria:
Creates a clear analysis based on basic scientific
principles (revolution, rotation, gravity, magnetism,
forces, energy) about the chosen natural phenomenon.
Produces a creative, detailed presentation.
Explains the impact of natural phenomenon on life.
Includes a brief description of the associated
technology.

INFORMATION LITERACY
Differentiating print and electronic resources and using
both of them equally in learning will be the focus of this
unit lesson. Throughout the process students will be
asked to explore print and e-encyclopedias to understand
the differences and find out in what ways those
resources can be used equally as qualifiedresources.
Moreover students also learn the strategies to cope with
the difficulties when using these resources.
