WCC Organic Chemistry Lab Guidelines
1

For CEM 211

Text: The Organic Chemistry Lab Survival Manual, James W. Zubrick, 6ed.

Lab equipment needed:

Safety goggles
Lab notebook( carbon-less)
Scientific calculator

1. Labs must be completed no later than fifteen minutes before the end to allow time
for clean-up. The entire class could lose points if the lab is left in a messy state.
Make sure all glassware is returned to your kits, and other glassware to the
appropriate places. Iron rings, clamps can be stored in the cabinets below your
bench. Clamps, rings etc. should not be stored with glassware.

2. If labs are missed without being made up a student will receive a zero. Labs do
not get dropped. If you miss more than three labs you will not pass the course.

3. In order to make-up a lab in a different section, contact the instructor beforehand.
You are not guaranteed a spot if their class is full. Show up early. When you are
done the instructor must sign-off in your lab notebook, and you will turn the lab
into your regular instructor.

4. If you have taken the class before please contact your former instructor and have
him or her give your grades to your current instructor. You have the option of re-
doing labs to improve your score.

5. Prior to coming to lab you must prepare the following in your lab notebook:
Title, date, objectives (purpose), an updated table of contents a summarized,
procedure and a table of physical constants, apparatus and materials, brief
background (on the lab handout and in Zubrick). Complete results table. Also
there are sometimes pre-lab exercises which must be completed.

Students who have incomplete pre-labs will have the appropriate points
deducted from their scores (see the last page). Or they can have the option of
completing the lab in a different section (if any).

Students without the background procedure, or results table complete may
not be able to complete the lab and may be asked to leave. It is important
that you know what you are doing before coming to lab.

6. Lab write-ups must be turned in the following week at the beginning of lab. A
complete lab report includes the following in the specific order below:
Title, Date, Partner(s) if any

Objective(s)

Table of physical constants for ALL chemicals used (melting point(solids),
boiling point(liquids), density(liquids), molecular weight or molar mass(for all
chemicals), structure( for organic compounds--can be hand-drawn) refractive
index(for liquids). Reputable sources are: CRC Handbook of Physics and
Chemistry (in LA 309) WolframAlpha, Sigma-Aldrich.com. DO NOT use
Wikipedia.
Apparatus and Materials.

Brief summarized background

Procedure (revise if necessary due to changes in lab)

Data

Results/Calculations

Include calculations here. Please show clearly all calculations. Attend to units etc.

Conclusions: State your percent yield, and any other physical constants obtained
that proves that your objectives were met. No discussion here. Just concisely state
the outcome. Explain variations from expected results.

Questions

Please include the question(s) with the answer.

Labs are due the following lab session (or seven days after for Spring Summer
sessions).
You will be graded for content, results and presentation. Please include any
supporting graph or printout.
Each lab will be graded out of 25 points.
You must handwrite your labs in your lab notebooks and turn in the top sheets.
Points will be deducted for sloppy lab reports.
All observations and results must be written in lab notebook during lab. Do not
store information on loose paper.
If you make a mistake use a single line in to cross out, and rewrite the correct
information.
Points will be deducted for information that is scratched out, or written over.
Tables must be drawn using a ruler.
If you choose to type your reports you may hand draw your mechanisms.

8. The instructor must sign off on your results at the end of each lab. Failure to do so
can result in a zero for that lab.

9. Be sure to sign-in when you get to lab.

10. Please adhere to all the safety rules outlined in the safety video. (Shown the
first day). Students will not be allowed to do the lab wearing shorts or skirts
that do not cover their knees, or wearing shoes with holes or sandals. Safety
goggles are imperative.

11. Students who come in up to 5 minutes late, will lose 1 point.
Students who come in up to 10 minutes late, will lose 2 points.
Any student coming to lab after 10 minutes will not be allowed to attend the
lab according to instructors discretion. You miss valuable information when
you are late, and it is a safety concern.

12. Do not use cell phones or any other devices of the kind while in lab. You must
pay attention in a chemistry lab. In an emergency let the instructor know if
you must step out briefly. If you are gone too long or too frequently you may
not be allowed to complete the lab.

13. Remember you must get a 70% in lab to get above a at least a C- in the
course.

14. If you miss more than 3 labs you will not be able to successfully complete the
course.

15. Lab Scoring Rubric*

Category Max Points
1 Prelab**
2 -Title/Table of Contents/Date/Name(s) 1
3 Objective/Purpose 1
4 -Table of Physical Constants/Apparatus 3
5 -Procedure 3
6 Data Tables 4
7 Results Tables/Calculations 4
8 Participation 3
10 Conclusion 4
11 Questions 2
12 References 1

*There are some prelab questions that are included in each lab worth 2 points max.
(points deducted if not complete or partially complete)
Late labs will not be collected. Students must turn their labs in when they get to class. 10
minutes after class starts labs are considered late. Labs that are late will automatically
lose six points. If labs are more than one day late they will not be accepted.
**Remember if items 4 and 5 are not completed you may not be permitted to do the lab.

To repeat: sloppy lab reports will have points deducted.

Full points will be deducted for partial completion of different categories. For example, if
you forget to include the title, for category 2 you will still lose 1 point.
