The President's Letter

Dear Colleagues:

As ultrasound continues to evolve as a valuable tool
within the many facets of medicine, the AIUM
continues to endeavor to provide the most up-to-date
information through professional and public education,
research, development of guidelines, and accreditation
for the medical ultrasound community.
AIUM Practice Guidelines

It is a pleasure to announce that the AIUM Practice Guideline for the
Performance of a Focused Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Scan has
been developed. This guideline was created to provide assistance to
practitioners performing focused ultrasound studies of the female pelvis in the

practice of reproductive medicine and infertility.

I would especially like to thank the American College of Nurse-Midwives,
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of
Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Society for
Reproductive Medicine-Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility,
and Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses. Their
valuable time, effort, and knowledge helped bring this document to fruition.
Special thanks to Joshua Copel, MD, who directed the task force and
coordinated the group involvement in the guideline's development.

As you are aware, we have been enhancing our existing guidelines with
images and interactive elements as well as adding an online CME test that
provides an opportunity to earn up to 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit (free for
AIUM members.) The following guidelines have been enhanced thus far:
Neonatal Spine, Obstetric, Scrotal, and Neurosonography in Neonates and
Infants.

Ultrasound First Update

I am heartened by the increasing momentum of the Ultrasound First endeavor.
As you know, this effort began in earnest early this year and is designed to call
attention to the safe, effective, affordable advantages of using ultrasound first in
a growing number of clinical situations. The Sound Judgment Series in the
Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine has resulted in 9 highly cited peer-reviewed
articles and many more in the queue, highlighting the clinical value of using
ultrasound first in specific clinical diagnoses where ultrasound has shown
comparative or superior value. This series serves as an important educational
resource for our educators and clinicians.

Most recently, we've posted a collection of
informative video clips of leading experts
describing their experience with using ultrasound
first and the importance of the effort for better
patient care, safety, and cost savings.

The AIUM will host an Ultrasound First Forum in early November that will
expand the dialogue among medical organizations, educators, insurers, patient
advocacy groups, government agencies, industry, and others. I'm looking
forward to the collaboration and believe this is a critical step in the progress of
this important effort.

your support of Ultrasound First.

AIUM Convention:
Abstract Submission Deadline is 7 Days Away

With the abstract submission deadline just 7 days away, I want to encourage
all researchers, new and experienced, to submit your abstracts before the
deadline of September 27, 2012. Clinicians, scientists, young faculty, and new
investigators have the chance to present their findings to a diverse audience at
the 2013 AIUM Annual Convention, April 6-10, 2013, at the New York Marriott
Marquis Hotel in New York, New York. These scientific contributions are an
essential part of our meeting and provide presenters the opportunity to have
their work viewed by an esteemed audience. I am looking forward to
experiencing the exceptional variety of sessions and abstract presentations at
the 2013 AIUM Annual Convention.
First Urology Practice Accredited by the AIUM

The AIUM recently granted ultrasound practice accreditation in urology to the
Smith Institute for Urology of The North Shore LIJ Health System in New Hyde
Park, New York. This is the first practice to receive accreditation in the practice
of urology from the AIUM. The accreditation process encourages providers of
diagnostic ultrasound services to assess their strengths and weaknesses and
initiate changes to improve their practices. Director of Ultrasound for the
practice, Bruce R. Gilbert, MD, PhD, stated, "The AIUM accreditation process
helped organize our approach and markedly improved the quality of our
process." It is pleasing to be involved with an organization that prides itself in
providing the most current and accurate information and skill training so that
individuals can make the best use of this imaging modality while ensuring the
safety of the patients who depend on them.
Information Overload

If you're like me, you spend way too much time deleting and discarding
irrelevant e-mails and mail that is of little or no interest to you. Sound familiar?
At the AIUM, we really want to send you only the information that is of the most
interest to you. This is challenging for a multidisciplinary organization because
we have many members with multiple interest areas. The solution? Tell us what
your primary interest area is. That way, if you're mainly interested in
musculoskeletal ultrasound, for example, we would avoid sending you
something relating to fetal echocardiography. To update your profile online, go
to www.aium.org, click "My Account" on the top right, and then "Edit Your
Profile." There you'll be able to select your primary interest area from the drop-
down box at the bottom of the screen and make any other updates that will help
us understand your interests and background.

I look forward to providing another update in November, following the fall board
meetings and the Ultrasound First Forum.
