Foreword
The establishment of the ISO 15156 Maintenance Agency was confirmed by the ISO Technical Management
Board in June 2007. A copy of the TMB Vote-Form Number: 34/2007 giving the rules of procedure for the
maintenance agency can be obtained from the ISO TMB Secretariat. It is also available from the ISO 15156
website at www.iso.org/iso15156maintenance.

ISO 15156 series has, since publication, been amended by a number of Technical Corrigenda and Technical
Circulars and consists of the following parts, under the general title Petroleum and natural gas industries
Materials for use in H
2
S-containing environments in oil and gas production:
Part 1: General principles for selection of cracking-resistant materials (2009)
Part 2: Cracking-resistant carbon and low alloy steels, and the use of cast irons (2009)
Technical Circular 1, ISO 15156-2:2009/Cir.1:2011(E) (2011-06-14)
Part 3: Cracking-resistant CRAs (corrosion-resistant alloys) and other alloys (2009)
Technical Circular 1, ISO 15156-3:2009/Cir.1:2011(E) (2011-06-20)
As applicable, subsequent publications resulting in new editions of an individual part of ISO 15156, effectively
replace the corresponding set of documents shown above. Information on the latest status of these
documents can be obtained from www.iso.org/iso15156maintenance.

These materials shall also
be in the solution-annealed and quenched, or annealed and thermally-stabilized heat-treatment condition;
be free of cold work intended to enhance their mechanical properties; and
have a maximum hardness of 22 HRC.
However, S20910 is acceptable in the annealed or hot-rolled (hot/cold-worked) condition at a maximum hardness of 35 HRC.
A limit on the martensite content of these austenitic stainless steels should be considered.

Wrought and cast duplex stainless steels shall
be solution-annealed and liquid-quenched or rapidly cooled by other methods
b

have a ferrite content (volume fraction) of between 35 % and 65 %, and
not have undergone ageing heat-treatments.
Hot isostatic pressure-produced (HIP) [15] duplex stainless steel UNS S31803 (30 F
PREN
40, Mo 1,5 %) shall have a
maximum hardness of 25 HRC and shall
be in the solution-annealed and water-quenched condition,
have a ferrite content (volume fraction) of between 35 % and 65 %, and

not have undergone ageing heat-treatments.

NOTE Higher values of F
PREN
provide higher corrosion resistance, however they also lead to increased risk of sigma- and alpha-
prime phase formation, in the materials' ferrite phase, during manufacture, depending on product thickness and achievable quench rate.
The ranges of F
PREN
quoted are typical of those found to minimize the problem of sigma- and alpha- prime phase formation.

a
No data submitted to ascertain whether these materials are acceptable for service in the presence of elemental sulfur in the
environment.
b
A rapid cooling rate is one sufficiently fast to avoid the formation of deleterious phases, such as sigma-phase, and precipitates. The
presence of deleterious phases can reduce the cracking resistance of duplex stainless steels.
