The verse of an Odu Ifa says in part: nikan ko ibi olori ire gbe yan ori One-person not know where owner-of-ori good live choose head n ba ree yan ti a n They would go choose is them Ibi kan naa ni a gbe yan ori o Place one is we live choose head Kadara ko ni Good ori not together is.
English No one knows from where a lucky person chose his/her destiny If the place were to be known, many people would have gone their to choose their own destinies, too Let it be known that we all chose our destinies from the same source However, we chose the destinies differently.
Ori (head) has two definitions in Orisa worship. One definition of "Ori" means the physical head that is part of the bodily structure. In this regard, all creations of Odumare seem to have an ori, whether animate or inanimate. The second definition of "Ori" means destiny. Destiny is the spiritual aspect of humans that is not physical. Whether or not we believe in destiny, we all can relate to situational differences, failures and successes, frustrations and rewards; plus, we all can marvel at why some make it in competitions and most fail painfully. Instances of these experiences represent "Ori," the destiny.
If we ever wonder at the success of something hitherto considered impossible, or wondered at the opposite effect of something hitherto considered doable or attainable, then, we see destiny at work. That unseen energy that influences human direction in ways imaginable, positively or not-so-positively, is the Ori that Ifa wants humans to acknowledge and respect at all times. As humans, if we feel we are not going the direction we channel for ourselves, or we are frustrated with the results we get for our best and honest efforts, most likely, our oris are instrumental in the obvious results. If the obvious results happen to be the opposite of our expectations, we should dialogue with ori for explanation. And, the most effective way to dialogue with our ori is through Ifa: consultation with Orunmila through any of his trained akapos (trained representatives). Most times our ori will tell us what it has in stock for us. Knowing the contents in our ori is a liberating way of dealing with our failures and successes, our weakness and our strengths, our vices and our virtues. Once we know all of these, we will be at peace with ourselves, we will be at peace with people whose paths would cross our paths, we would then be at peace with the world in general because, truthfully, Ibi kan naa ni a gbe yan ori o We chose our destinies from the same source [from Odumare] Kadara ko ni But, our choices were different.
May Odumare crown our honest efforts with success, ase.
