Another entertaining round saw some fantastic competitive matches played out. Thanks to those who
have been submitting match reports and results with any hassle from me. Really makes my life easier to
receive by Tuesday evening.

votes for a number of teams0 but if - am not0 please keep track so that when we order the trophies at
the end of season it is not big issue to tell me who will win this prestigious award. 1oaches will also be
able to select the 21oaches Award3 trophy.

The adults ventured on their longest road trip of the season 4 a two and a half hour trip
one way to 5ubeena. 5ubeena call themselves the 2Pirates3 and when we arrived we
were greeted by a friendly bunch of people. 6nly #% players were able to make this
roadtrip including our veteran 7ohn Andrews who had not yet donned our playing strip
this season but came to aide in anyway he could. The first %+ minutes saw both teams
attacking however the Pirates took the lead via a soft goal. 1ygnet again started to
counter effectively and our star striker ee &reminder he is our special mar8uee striker from iverpool0
cousin to 9arl Pilkington of T: fame) drew level with a shot from distance that had no right to go in. -t
was the !!

minute when - hobbled off with a torn calve muscle and the team realised that was it. 5o
subs and *+ odd minutes to dig deep. Another fairly soft goal was conceded and we went to the
break #/% down. We changed our formation and put ee and Ayoub &our fastest two) up front with the
long ball or through ball employed at every chance. The %
nd
half was one of pure guts and
determination. We won the half !/+ to see out the win ,/% and ;teve 1umper took an e<pertly and well
deserved goal which gave us the % goal cushion with #+ to go. The last #+ mins everyone was out on
their feet0 but our defence became impenetrable and we continued to attack on the 8uick counter
wave after wave. This game summed up the 1ygnet spirit and never say die attitude. We went to
5ubeena looking for match practice and to be competitive0 we came back a strong united team with
the victory and a great deal of confidence. Well done team.

Why Vision is essential to be a good player
Ive been in this game for years and when I speak with other players or coaches about
youth and coaching, I always get the same ole lackey responses.
We must teach first touch! We must coach dribbling skills! Speed is so
important in the modern game!
Well ok, when teaching the game all of those are important and my colleagues are
genuinely correct. But, how I see it, vision is by far the most powerful skill! Now
let me explain why.
There are some fortunate souls who are born with the innate skill of good vision. However, the rest of
us need to cultivate and really work on forming this skill. Just like any other skill be that, speed,
dribbling, passing etc. You should also work on your vision.
Why vision is important in soccer?
Vision creates calmness
With good vision you will promote other important qualities like calmness. Take for example you are
in the midst of high-pressure situations. If you see where your opponents are, and where they are
coming from you are more capable of trapping the ball in the right direction away from the high-
pressure defence. Also, with good vision you will know where your teammates are located at in regards
to the opponents high-pressure. This allows for a smart one touch pass, or just being tranquil with
possession. Since you know where opponents and teammates are at you are already ahead of the game!
Vision helps with trapping
Trapping is very important and of course you need the ability to trap physically but you also need to be
aware of whos around you. Being calm because you know where your teammates are positioned is an
enabler to your trapping ability. Your first touch will be calm, since you are confident and know where
people are around you. Your support and square pass is just one trap away!

Vision helps dribbling and passing
Imagine you receive a ball, and you see everyone on the field because of your awesome vision. You
have time to take someone on so you start dribbling. You make a move, and then you notice someone
coming in from the side to double-team you. Then in the corner of your eye you notice a teammate
moving into position for a quick one two. You then fake one-way but pass to your teammate and your
teammate does a one-two with you. You just faked out two guys because of your vision.
Some players because of their natural born ability may forsake good vision; however, once they get
older and their skill starts to fade their vision will become all the more important. So why not work on
it NOW! (Note: Most good players have great vision.)

This is my eleventh season in 7unior?Fouth soccer. $or most of those years -.ve
been involved in coaching teams. - have a name for the entire era. - call it
2the wilderness years3. -.ve studied and learned from some of the world.s great
coaches. - can.t remember who it was that came up with this sobering
8uotation0 2every win takes you one step nearer to your ne<t defeat3. -.ve
come up with an adaptation of that 8uote. -t goes 2every defeat takes you one step nearer
to a0 erM..another defeat3. -.ve got so used to losing matches that my attempts to lift the
players after yet another loss has become habitual. Asually -.ll spout some garbage about us
coming oh so close and -.m sure our first win in seven years is @ust around the corner and how
we dominated the fourteen seconds after half time and how unlucky we were to concede
seventeenNN After each of our first three matches this season -.ve launched into my usual spiel
only for Eig "ave or one of the players to tentatively interrupt me after about twenty five
minutes to point out that we actually won the match which can actually shed a new light on
things. Three wins and on ;aturday we were supposed to have the bye when the $ederation
discovered that our opponents were in fact a 2phantom3 team0 whatever that is. Dowever0
some meddling bureaucrat decided to disrupt our plans for our free match/day &"ave and -
had planned to go to a flower show) by relegating a Aniversity team from the A#*
competition0 that had similar composition to ours in terms of players. ages &- tried to sell the
coaches of the 5elson A#* team who now had a bye instead of us0 two tickets to the flower
show and promptly received a siOe thirteen boot up my rectum for my troubles but - digest).
$or the first time this season Eig 7ake0 Tall -saac0 1olossal :incent &Kditor.s 5ote> he wasn.t
even there due to illness)0 and0 =argantuan ;eth) had to face up to players who outclassed
us in terms of both stature and physical structure. -f siOe rather than age was a dis8ualifier
Aniversity had a player who would have been barred from participating in adult matches.
They certainly used their physical advantage to good effect and in a clever manner. ;ome of
it may have been border/line but as far as - could tell they generally kept to the right side of
what is legal so no complaints from us. They also had a tad more soccer nous than us and at
times played some great stuff. ;ure we had our moments as time and again in the early part
of the game -saac was outpacing their defenders and getting in on goal but by half time
they had ad@usted and moved a couple of their faster players back to counter -saac.s threat.
;ure he still had chances but was always under pressure and could only manage one goal
with a fine run and shot after 7osh had set him up having won a fifty/fifty tackle in the bo<
against one of their bigger players with the type of intent we would have liked not only him
but most of his team mates to have demonstrated more often in the match. Ey that time
Aniversity had scored four and although we had held them to +/# at half/time our collective

heads sunk after we had conceded a second early in the second half. This Aniversity team
were certainly no 2phantoms3 and to be honest -.ll take a loss every time in a match in which
we learn something &which we certainly did) over a bye in which we learn nothing and are
forced to resort to attending flower shows. "espite the lesson we were handed on the day -
don.t think the gap between us and them is insurmountable and had we managed to score
from one of our early chances who knows what might have happened. We.ll regroup and
we.ll be ready for the return fi<ture later in the season. -n the meantime we look forward to
the visit of 5elson &A#,) this ;aturday at the :alley. We are improving 4 our trend despite the
hiccough0 is steadily upwards. 1an.t wait for ;aturday.

-t was back to back victories for the A*s as they triumphed 5/# over a determined
9ingborough team. ;ome early pressure from 1ygnet resulted in a 9ingborough own goal0
which was soon followed up by a surging run down the wing by Kuan Asher and a second
goal in the net. 9ingborough fought back valiantly and some solid team play resulted in a
goal for the away side. 1ygnet rallied after the goal0 and solid defensive work from Riley
"ireen and growing confidence from 7ango Eeecroft kept the scoreline to %/# at half time.

$uelled by orange segment goodness0 1ygnet kicked off the second half. Kuan Asher added
to his growing goal tally with an audacious lob over three players straight into into the back of
the net. =oal of the seasonH Dis over/e<cited "ad certainly thought so. Gore tenacious
play by 7amie Alpine added a fourth goal and breathing space for 1ygnet. A welcome
return to the team for $lynn ;mith was capped by another great individual run and he
showed great determination as the opposition closed down the space to scramble a fifth
goal across the line.
=reat team spirit from everyone and 1ygnet will go into ne<t week.s away game at Duonville
with growing confidence and many proud parents.

Thanks to "ave0 1hris and Kran for sorting out two teams for the A's this week rather than #!
on one team of B/on/the/field> meant everyone got more playing time and it was easier on
the grown/ups tooN 9ingborough were great sports0 being happy to delay play for a few
minutes0 waiting for the rest of our team to turn up. The first half saw the two teams very
evenly matched with no/one scoring at all0 with Darry defending nicely in goals with his shiny
new gloves. 5ewest team member Dugo showed a daOOling display of footwork and skillfully
found a clear path for the ball through the pack. ;everal times 6li valiantly put his body on
the line for the sake of the team0 and Rory impressed the crowd with a speccy left/footer.
Knergy and focus waned a little in the second half0 and although Eenny scored a goal and
showed great perseverance trying for another one0 several goals sneaked past our defense.
Dowever0 Rory showed e<cellent teamwork0 calling to his players to pass the ball at

appropriate times0 Eilly cleared the ball from the opponents with a beautiful slide0 and the
team made us proud0 no matter what the score. =o the =reensN

With wet and blustery conditions and opponents unknown0 our bunch of unbeaten in year.s
stars took on ;outh Dobart Primary. This was a very even contest from start to finish0 with the
only difference being a great run by Sac in which the goal keeper fumbled his shot and Sac
gleefully accepted to see us sneak the win #/+.
-t was great to see the twins 9ate and Dolly back and they were always in the middle
stopping the opposition forays. ;am stepped up after his first game e<perience and made a
number of great steals and runs. All round a great team effort and our defence was rock
solid. We @ust need to start re/focusing on the fast and accurate passing we finished last
season with and some more positioning to ensure we keep matching the strong opposition
this season. &Kds note> West Dobart who we defeated 5/! recently demolished Waimea
Wyverns in our division #,/+ on the weekend which makes our first up win even better). Thanks

Well0 what can one sayMa lot actually.

The turnaround from last weeks shellacking was impressive. The team bolted out of the gate
in the opening #+ minutes and knocked in ! goals and at that point it looked like we were
about to inflict a painful drubbing to the opposition.

The big difference was the intensity and tempo that was displayed 4 especially in defence0
with our players putting on a lot of pressure whenever a ;trike player had the ball. -t was great
to see our Tnew chums. 4 Aimee0 5oah and 6Oi being able to thwart the opposition.s attack
with a @udicious kick or three when it was needed.

which resulted in a half time score of !/%.

A tense %

half almost saw us pull away on two occasions with one shot being struck at close
range that hit the hand of one of our players and another deft shot that shaved the
woodwork.

To the ;trikes credit they continued the momentum and leveled the scores and a draw was a
fair result to both teams. -t was heartening to see the team get Tback off the canvas. after
last weekends result.

This week0 our coaching team decided that we would place the players in positions without
consulting them too much so we had a game plan for both halves0 didnPt all go 8uite
according to plan0 but we aim to continue in that manner so that everyone gets to play in a
variety of positions whilst we still know that we are putting forward a strong team. This match
had an added incentive as one of the opposition players played for our team last year and it
was a matter of honour for our team to win on home turf. We had three subs this week so
everyone was told to go hard and then they could come off for a break when they needed
it.
The first half of the game was e<ceptional. Kvery player knew their position and stuck to it.
Kvery player gave #++( effort and we saw a great deal of skill and teamwork. -t paid off. The
ball spent most of the time in our half so the defence line0 headed by 5ed and supported by
Klliot and 6scar0 who really had the art of scissoring down pat0 didnPt get too much action.
Although 1odi was keenly aware of what was going on in the match the ball didnPt get as far
as him too often. We went into half time # up. =oal to 1obi0 with plenty of forward support
from "enOel0 Riley and iam.
At half time we talked to the team about playing a more attacking mid field. "enOel took on
the role of goalie and we mi<ed the rest of the field up a bit. eyroy played an e<ceptional
game0 changing positions many times without breaking his stride and showing how
adaptable he is. "emi and Rory did a great @ob in defence and really helped to keep the ball
in the scoring half. ;ascha again showed lots of potential with a really determined attack on
the ball whenever it came close to him. Eut after such great teamwork0 accurate passing
and communication in the first half0 the second half turned into more of a free for all with
structured positioning all but gone. -t didnPt matter though as our technical skills and general
fitness was much better than ;t Aloysius0 with 1obi scoring two more goals in the second half
giving us the first win for the season. ! to nil. The ;eadragon anthem was sung proudly / and

A damp start to the season and we paid the price for some poor positional play in the first
half and found ourselves % goals down. After conceding the early goals0 we kept going and
9ai managed to pull one back0 but it was to be a day of missed opportunities for the A##.s on
a wet slippery surface. After losing another goal we trailed ! / # at half time in the rain at
9ingston.
-n the second half we picked up our game and gave a better account of ourselves0 which
was encouraging to see players &-.ve not coached before) trying to turn the game0 but it
wasn.t to be and although 9ingsborough =reens scored their fourth we were still going
forward trying to pull one back. 6ur defence did well for the remainder of the match and as
a team we locked out the game0 but we really paid for the missed chances in front of goal.
