Year 1 Task Card Light and Sound

Introduction

This digital resource consists of a teacher resource and student printable activity sheet
addressing light.
This is intended as an introductory, exploratory and concluding activity.
Formative assessment will take place throughout the resource activities and the students will be
informed of their learnings.
This resource is broken into two sections to aid in the scaffolding of information. It is
recommended that the learning manager finishes section 1 before moving to section 2.
Focus question

What makes light and what sense do we experience it through?

SCIENCE UNDERSTANDING

Content description
Light and sound are produced by a range of sources and can be sensed (ACSSU020).

recognising senses are used to learn about the world around us: our eyes to detect light, our ears to detect
sound, and touch to feel vibrations
identifying the sun as a source of light
recognising that objects can be seen when light from sources is available to illuminate them

Declarative Knowledge
The learner will know:

Procedural Knowledge:
The learner will be able to:

D1 What the use and significance of the
senses are.
D2 What light is.
D3 Sources that create light.
D4 The sun is the greatest source of light.

P1 Apply the senses to collect data.
P2 Explain the concept of light
P3 Compare different sources of light.
P4 Identify the sun as being the greatest
light source.

Classroom Application Section 1
Differentiation

Teacher scaffolding the whole resource to cater for all learners
Teacher aid to assist with roving
Teacher to float
Peer teaching possibility
Variety of delivery formats and learning styles

POSING QUESTIONS:
The 5 Es [Primary Connections] - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate
What are some senses?
How is light produced?

How do we sense light?

COLLECT AND REPRESENT DATA:
The 5 Es [Primary Connections] - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate
Class discussion re prior knowledge of the 5 senses.
Explain that although there are 5 senses we are only focusing on one for this unit sight.
Teacher is to put the worksheet on the electronic whiteboard and guide students through it.
Get students to complete question one of their worksheet.
Students to close their eyes and listen carefully.
Play any music with rainforest sounds included or any relaxing music.
SCRIPT SUGGESTION: students to imagine they are walking through the forest and ask them
various questions regarding what they can see. (remind them not to answer out loud just think
to themselves)
Have the students open their eyes.
What did their eyes tell them about the rainforest?
Set students to task sheet item 2
ANALYSE EVIDENCE
The 5 Es [Primary Connections] - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate
Sit outside for 5 minutes and gather data (through pictures and sentences) about what they can
see. Diagrams need to be labelled. Students will need teacher assistance.
RELATING EVIDENCE & CONCLUSIONS
The 5 Es [Primary Connections] - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate
Write a sentence about why the sense of sight is important and how it helps us in everyday life.
DEVELOPING FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS
Have the students share their summaries to learn from their peers.

Classroom Application Section 2
POSING QUESTIONS
The 5 Es [Primary Connections] - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate

Initiate class discussion by asking what creates light? Make sure students are aware of the
difference between natural and artificial light and the many sources of light.

Task sheet number 5 - cut, paste & sorting exercise.
ANALYSE EVIDENCE

Refer students to worksheet number 6 for Multiple Choice questions. May need teacher help.

RELATING EVIDENCE AND CONCLUSIONS
The 5 Es [Primary Connections] - Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate

1. Refer students to worksheet number 7 classifying some examples at home or in the classroom
of sources of light? Teacher guidance recommended.

DEVELOPING FURTHER INVESTIGATONS

1. Classifying sources of light into natural or artificial.
2. That the sun is a source of light, but the moon is not.
