Introduction about Exodus:
• Second Book of the Pentateuch
• “departure” – Greek word because of the
departure of the Israelites from Egypt
• Focuses on the prime importance to the prime
people
• Divided into four divisions: I. The Israelites in
Egypt, II. The Exodus in Egypt and the Journeys
to Sinai, III. The Covenant at Mount Sinai, IV.
The Dwellings and its Furnishings
Chapter 1
Jacob’s Descendants in Egypt
• Sons of Jacob who accompanied him and
migrated with him into Egypt – Reuben,
Simeon, Levi, Judah, Isaachar, Zebulun,
Benjamin, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher
• Total number of descendants – 70
descendants
• Joseph was already in Egypt
• Even though Joseph and all his brothers and
the whole generation had died, the Israelites
remained fruitful.
The Oppression
• New king of Egypt said, “how numerous and
powerful the Israelites are growing… stop their
increase… they might fight against us…”
• Egyptians dreaded the Israelites, reduced
them to slavery, and made life bitter for them.
Command to the midwives
• Order of the Pharaoh to the Hebrew
midwives – “when giving birth, if it is a boy, kill
him; but if it is a girl, she may live…”
• Shiphrah and Puah –the Hebrew midwives
• Both of them refused the order of the Pharaoh,
for they fear God.
• Hebrew midwives are not like Egyptian
midwives.
• “Throw into the river every boy that is born to
the Hebrews, but you may let all the girls live.”
– Pharaoh
Chapter 2
Birth and Adoption of Moses
• A certain man of the house of Levi married a
Levite woman and bore a son.
• They hid the son for 3 months
• When they can’t hide him any longer, the child
was placed in a papyrus basket and placed
among the reeds of the river bank.
• Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river to
bathe.
• She saw the baby boy crying inside the basket
• She called for the child’s mother and said,
“take your child, nurse it for me, and I will
repay you.”
• When the child grew, he was adopted by the
daughter of Pharaoh.
• She called him MOSES because “taken from
the water”
Moses’ Flight to Midian
• Pharaoh sought to put him into death but
Moses fled and stayed in the land of Midian.
• While Moses is in a well, 7 daughters of a
priest of Midian came to draw water, but
shepherds came and drew them away.
• Moses defended the 7 daughters from the
shepherds and even watered their flock.
• Reuel – father of the 7 daughters
• “who is that man who saved you? why did you
leave him there in the well? You should have
invited him something to eat.” – Reuel said to
his daughters
• Moses agreed to live with them
• Zipporah – wife of Moses
• Gershom – Son of Moses and Zipporah
• Gershom – “I am a stranger in a foreign land.”
The Burning Bush
• Israelites still cried out because of slavery
Chapter 3
• Jethro – Father-in-law of Moses; the priest of
Midian
• Horeb – mountain of God
• An angel appeared
• Moses saw a flaming bush but it was not
burned.
The Call of Moses
• God called Moses to save the Israelites from
the oppression of the Egyptians. He shall go to
the Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of
Egypt.
• God said to Moses: “I am who am….. this is
what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me
to you.” – meaning “ The Lord, the God of
your Fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac, the God of Jacob has sent me to you.”
• “go and tell the elders of Israelites what I have
told you..” - Lord
• “ I have decided to lead you up out of the
misery of Egypt into the land of the
Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,
Hivites and Jebusites, a land flowing with
milk and honey.” – Lord
Chapter 4
Confirmation of Moses’ Mission
• 3 signs/proofs if Israelites will not believe
Moses:
• Turning of Staff into a snake
• A hand becomes leprous, then back
into the hand like the rest of his body
• Water from the river turns into blood in
a dry land
Aaron’s Office as Assistant
• “I will assist you in speaking and will teach you
what you are to say” – Lord said to Moses since
Moses is not good in speaking
• Aaron the Levite – brother of Moses;
spokesman or prophet of Moses
Moses’ Return to Egypt
 • Moses took his wife and his sons and started
back to Egypt
• One night, the Lord came upon Moses and
would have killed him, but Zipporah get apiece
of flint and cut off her son’s foreskin. Then, God
let Moses go
• Aaron kissed Moses when they met at the
mountain of God
• Moses performed the signs before the Israelites
and the people believed in him.
Chapter 5
Pharaoh’s Obduracy
• Moses and Aaron go to the Pharaoh and say
whatever God has told them to say and to do
so.
• Pharaoh said to Moses and Aaron that what
they want to say is to take the people away
from their work
• The same day, the Pharaoh ordered the
taskmasters and foremen not to supply the
people of Israel with straw for their brick
making as they have previously done, yet they
still need to levy the same quota of bricks as
they have previously done
• “They are lazy; that is why they are crying…
increase the work for the men.” – Pharaoh
Complaint of the Foremen
• Israelite foremen came to appeal with the
Pharaoh saying: “Why do you treat your
servants in this manner? … Your servants are
beaten. It is you who are at fault.”
• Pharaoh replied that they are just lazy.
• The foremen left the Pharaoh and went to
Moses and Aaron and said to them, “The Lord
look upon you and judge! You have brought us
bad odor with the Pharaoh…”
Renewal of God’s Promise
• Moses said to the Lord, “why do you treat this
people so badly? Why did you send me on such
a mission? When I went to the Pharaoh and
speak in your name, he has maltreated this
people of yours and you have done nothing to
rescue them.” Moses
Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you in unto the
land, concerning which I did swear to give it to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give
it you for a heritage: I am the Lord. And Moses
spoke so unto the children of Israel: but they
hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit,
and for cruel bondage.”
• But Moses denied the request.
• And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying, “Go in,
speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let
the children of Israel go out of his land. “
• And Moses spoke before the Lord, saying,
“Behold, the children of Israel have not
hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh
hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips? “
• And the Lord spoke unto Moses and unto
Aaron, and gave them a charge unto the
children of Israel, and unto Pharaoh king of
Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the
land of Egypt.

Chapter 6

Zipporah
• “I am the Lord: And I appeared unto Abraham,
unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God
Chapter 7: Aaron's Rod
Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not
known to them. And I have also established my
Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I have made you as
covenant with them, to give them the land of
God to Pharaoh; and Aaron your brother shall
Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein
be your prophet. You shall speak all that I
they were strangers. And I have also heard the
command you; and Aaron your brother shall
groaning of the children of Israel, whom the
speak to Pharaoh, that he let the children of
Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have
Israel go out of his land. I will harden
remembered my covenant. Wherefore say unto
Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and
the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will

9 plagues of Egypt:
The Plague of Blood. “Yahweh, the God of the
Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, “Let my
people go, that they may serve me in the
wilderness:” and behold, until now you
haven’t listened. Thus says Yahweh, “In this
you shall know that I am Yahweh. Behold, I
will strike with the rod that is in my hand on
the waters which are in the river, and they
shall be turned to blood. The fish that are in
the river shall die, and the river shall become
foul; and the Egyptians shall loathe drinking
water from the river.”
Chapter 8
The Plague of Frogs “Let my people go, that they
may serve me. If you refuse to let them go,
behold, I will plague all your borders with
frogs: and the river shall swarm with frogs,
which shall go up and come into your house,
and into your bedchamber, and on your bed,
and into the house of your servants, and on
your people, and into your ovens, and into
your kneading troughs: and the frogs shall
come up both on you, and on your people,
and on all your servants.”
Pharaoh said, “You and your people can go but pray to
Yahweh to remove all of this frogs”
But as soon as the frogs were gone the pharaoh
hardens his heart refuses to set the Israelites
free.
The Plague of Lice. Yahweh said to Moses, “Tell
Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the
dust of the earth, that it may become lice
throughout all the land of Egypt.”
The magicians tried to do the same but they couldn’t,
still the pharaoh hardens his heart as Yahweh
said.
The Plague of Flies “Let my people go, that they
may serve me. Else, if you will not let my
people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies
on you, and on your servants, and on your
people, and into your houses: and the houses
of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of
flies, and also the ground whereon they are. I
will set apart in that day the land of Goshen,
in which my people dwell, that no swarms of
flies shall be there; to the end you may know
that I am Yahweh in the midst of the earth. I
will put a division between my people and
your people: by tomorrow shall this sign be.”
Pharaoh couldn’t stand the flies so again; he let the
Israelites sacrifice to Yahweh.
But as soon as the flies were gone; he hardens his
heart again and stopped them from getting
out of Egypt.
Chapter 9
The Plague on the Cattle “Let my people go, that
they may serve me. For if you refuse to let
them go, and hold them still, behold, the
hand of Yahweh is on your livestock which
are in the field, on the horses, on the
donkeys, on the camels, on the herds, and on
the flocks with a very grievous
pestilence. Yahweh will make a distinction
between the livestock of Israel and the
livestock of Egypt; and there shall nothing die
of all that belongs to the children of Israel.”
Still, he didn’t let the people go.
The Plague of Boils “Take to you handfuls of ashes of
the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward
the sky in the sight of Pharaoh. It shall
become small dust over all the land of Egypt,
and shall be a boil breaking forth with boils
on man and on animal, throughout all the
land of Egypt.”
The magicians couldn’t stand before Moses because of
the boils; for the boils were on the magicians,
and on all the Egyptians. Yahweh hardened
the heart of Pharaoh, and he didn’t listen to
them, as Yahweh had spoken to Moses.
The Plague of Hail “Let my people go, that they may
serve me. For this time I will send all my
plagues against your heart, against your
officials, and against your people; that you
may know that there is none like me in all the
earth. For now I would have put forth my
hand, and struck you and your people with
pestilence, and you would have been cut off
from the earth; but indeed for this cause I
have made you stand: to show you my
power, and that my name may be declared
throughout all the earth; as you still exalt
yourself against my people, that you won’t let
them go. Behold, tomorrow about this time I
will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such
as has not been in Egypt since the day it was
founded even until now. Now therefore
command that all of your livestock and all
that you have in the field be brought into
shelter. Every man and animal that is found
in the field, and isn’t brought home, the hail
shall come down on them, and they shall
die.”
Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel
were, there was no hail.
“I have sinned this time. Yahweh is righteous, and I and
my people are wicked. Pray to Yahweh; for
there has been enough of mighty thundering
and hail. I will let you go, and you shall stay
no longer.” Pharaoh said
When Pharaoh saw the rain and the hail and the
thunders were ceased, his heart was
hardened, and he didn’t let the children of
Israel go, just as Yahweh had spoken through
Moses.
Chapter 10
The Plague of Locusts “How long will you refuse to
humble yourself before me? Let my people
go, that they may serve me. Or else, if you
refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow
I will bring locusts into your country, and they
shall cover the surface of the earth, so that
one won’t be able to see the earth. They shall
eat the residue of that which has escaped,
which remains to you from the hail, and shall
eat every tree which grows for you out of the
field. Your houses shall be filled, and the
houses of all your servants, and the houses of
all the Egyptians; as neither your fathers nor
your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day
that they were on the earth to this day.”
Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man
be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they
may serve Yahweh, their God. Don’t you yet
know that Egypt is destroyed?”
Pharaoh only wants men to serve Yahweh but Moses
demanded that all of them must go even the
flocks.
Pharaoh refuses them to go so the locusts came and
destroyed what was left in the hail storm.
The Plague of Darkness “Stretch out your hand
toward the sky, that there may be darkness
over the land of Egypt, even darkness which
may be felt.”
Moses stretched forth his hand toward the sky, and
there was a thick darkness in all the land of
Egypt three days. They didn’t see one
another, neither did anyone rise from his
place for three days; but all the children of
Israel had light in their dwellings.
Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, “Go, serve Yahweh.
Only let your flocks and your herds stay
behind. Let your little ones also go with you.”
Moses said, “You must also give into our hand
sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may
sacrifice to Yahweh our God. Our livestock
also shall go with us. There shall not a hoof
be left behind, for of it we must take to serve
Yahweh our God; and we don’t know with
what we must serve Yahweh, until we come
there.”
But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he
wouldn’t let them go. Pharaoh said to him,
“Get away from me! Be careful to see my
face no more; for in the day you see my face
you shall die!” Moses said, “You have spoken
well. I will see your face again no more.”
CHAPTER 11
Moses announces the first birth
• God will give the pharaoh 1 more plague
• All of the first born in Egypt will die
including first born beasts- the plague
that God will give to the Egyptians
• There will be a great cry in Egypt
CHAPTER 12
PASSOVER
• 10th day of the first month every house of the
Israelites should have one lamb
• The lamb should be w/o blemish and of its first
year, a sheep or goat
• 14 days Israelites should keep the lamb
• God told Moses to take off the blood of the
lamb and strike the blood unto the door’s posts
and on the upper door posts of the houses
where they shall eat
• They should it the lamb in the night roasted on
fire with unleavened bread and with bitter
herbs.
FESTIVAL OF THE UNLEAVENED BREAD
• God told the israelites that for seven days
thou should not eat bread with yeast only
unleavened bread
• For the first day the israelites should get rid of
all the yeasts in their houses
• If on person eats a leavened bread from the
first day until the 7th day, that person’s soul
shall be cut off from Israel
• In the first day there will be a holy convocation
and in the 7th day there will also be a
convocation
FIRST PASSOVER
• Moses told the Israelites what God told
him about the Passover
• The Israelites should kill a lamb, take a sprig of
hyssop dip it in the bowl containing the lamb’s
blood and strike it in the door’s posts and also
above the door for each Israelite house
• The Passover came God smote all of the first
born in Egypt and the great cry occur where
every house in Egypt has one dead
• The king rose up and called Aaron and Moses
and sent them away from Egypt with all the
Israelites and all of their goat, sheep, cattle
• Israelites left Egypt with Moses an Aaron
• They journeyed from Ramese to Succoth
• 600,000 people not including the women and
the children
• They live 430 years in the Egypt

Chapter 13: THE PILLAR OF CLOUD AND FIRE
• Moses told the Israelites to remember that day
where they got out from Egypt
• The lord shall bring the Israelites to the land of
the Canaanites, Hitites, Amorites, Hivites,
and Jebusites
• The people shall hear what happened to the
Egypt and be afraid: sorrow for the Palestina,
the dukes of Edom shall be amazed, Moabites
trembling nd the Canaanites melting away
• Every first born males and even first born
male animal belongs to God
• To buy back a first born male donkey one must
offer a lamb
• Every family must buy back every first born of
their family
• God took the Israelites the way to the red sea
 • Moses took Joseph’s bone with him. He sworn
the children of Israelites that God will visit you
and they shall carry those bones
• They journeyed form Succoth to Etham
• The lord came with them by the pillar of cloud
by the day and pillar of fire by the night to give
them light
CHAPTER 14: CROSSING THE RED SEA
• Pihahiroth- between Migdol and the red
sea near Baalzephon; Israelites camped
• The king sent out his men with chariots and
caught up with the Israelites
• Israelites cried out unto the lord
• Lord told Moses to lift his rod and hold it over
the sea; the water was divided into two making
a way for the Israelites to cross
• The Egyptians followed them but when they
were in the red sea Moses returned the water
back into normal
• The Egyptians lied dead on the sea
• The Israelites saw the great power of God and
worshiped God
CHAPTER 15: THE SONG OF MOSES
• Song of moses- verses 2-18
• Miriam- Aaron’s sister took her timbrels and
all of the women followed her
• Verse 21-song of Miriam
BITTER WATER
• They went to the desert of Shur for 3
days and soon arrived in Marah
• Marah- a place where water is bitter and they
could not drink from it
• The Lord gave them a tree and they cast it into
the waters and the water became sweet
• Elim-there were 12 wells and 3 score and 10
palm trees where they camped by the waters
Chapter16
The Manna and Quails
• On the 15th day of the 2nd month after they
had left Egypt they came to the desert of Sin.
• Sin is between Elim and Sinai.
• Israelites said to the Moses, why did you
brought us here? In Egypt we can eat what
ever we want but now where here to do want
us to starve to death?
• Then god said to Moses ,”I will give you
food for you to gather in six days”.
• Dazzling light indicates that the Lord here
the Israelites complains,
• In twilight Israelites will have meat to eat,
in the morning they will have as many bread as
they want
• In evening a large flock of quails flew in ,in
the morning there was dew all around.
• Then Moses said to them, if they are
gathering food and supply consume it once,
don’t save for other days.
• Israelites did not listen to what Moses told
them to do, they save for the next day but the
food became rotten and spoiled.
• Sabbath-the day of rest dedicated to the
lord ,that in six days they will gather food and
on the seventh day ,is the day of rest
• Manna is a food with small white seed
,taste like thin cakes made with honey
• Covenant box –where the manna is kept
• Almost 40yrs that the Israelites are eating
this kind of food
Chapter 17
Water from the Rock
• Rephidim is where Moses and the Israelites
camped ,there was no water in that place.
• Mount Sinai-where he struck the rock and
water came out
• Massah and Meribah –the two place where the
Israelites put the Lord in to the test
• Amalekites-attacked the Israelites ,Joshua and
his troops fought with the Amalekites
• Moses raise up his hand while holding the
stick ,when he is bring down the stick the
amalelikes are winning ,when he is raising his
hands up high again Joshua and his troops are
the one winning
• Moses, Hur and Aaron went to the hill ,Aaron
and Hur helped Moses when Moses is getting
tired
• The Lord is my banner-name of the altar
Chapter 18
• When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father
in law, heard of all that God had done for
Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the
Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;
• Jethro took Zipporah Moses wife
• Gershom and Eliezer Moses’s sons
• And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and
made them heads over the people, rulers of
thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties,
and rulers of tens.
Chapter 19
• In the third month, when the children of Israel
were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the
same day came they into the wilderness of
Sinai.
• And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the
people, and sanctify them to day and to
morrow, and let them wash their clothes,
• And be ready against the third day: for the
third day the LORD will come down in the sight
of all the people upon Mount Sinai.
• And Moses came and called for the elders of
the people, and laid before their faces all these
words which the LORD commanded him
• The lord order that no one shall touch or go to
the mount because you will turn to stone
• God appear to them
Chapter 20
• Thou shall have no other gods before me.
• Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
 • Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days
may be long upon the land which the LORD thy
God given thee.
• Thou shall not kill.
• Thou shall not commit adultery.
• Thou shall not steal.
• Thou shall not bear false witness against thy
neighbor.
• Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's house, thou
shall not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his
manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox,
nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy
neighbor's.
Chapter 31
Choice of Artisans
• Bezalel – son of Uri, son of Hur of the tribe of
Judah
-chosen by the Lord and filled him with
a divine spirit and understanding and
knowledge in every craft:
 Embroidery
 Making things of gold, silver, or
bronze
 Cutting and mounting precious
stones
 Carving wood
• Oholiab – assistant of Bezalel
-son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan
Aaron – the priest
Things ordered by the Lord for Moses to make:
- The meeting tent
- The ark of commandments with the
propitiatory on top of it
- All the furnishings of the tent
- The table with its appurtenances
- The pure gold lampstand
- The altar of incense
- The altar of holocausts
- The laver with its base
- The service clothes
- The sacred vestments for Aaron, for his
sons and the ministry
- The anointing oil
- The fragrant incense for the sanctuary
Sabbath Law
• Sabbaths – token between God and the
Israelites
• Keep the Sabbath something sacred.
“Anyone who does work on the Sabbath day
shall be put to death.”
• Mount Sinai – where God talked to
Moses
- God gave him two tablets of the
commandments; the stone tablets
inscribed by God’s own fingers.
Chapter 32
The Golden Calf
• Aaron ordered the Israelites to take off
their golden earrings and bring them to
him.
- He fashioned this gold with a graving tool
and made a molten calf
- He built an altar before the calf
• The next day, the people
offered holocausts and brought
peace offerings.
• Moses threw the tablets down
and broke them on the base of
the mountain
• “Whoever is for the Lord, let
him come to me!” – Moses
• The Levites rallied to Moses

Chapter 34
Renewal of the tablets
• The Lord asked Moses to cut two stone tablets
like the former
Religious Laws
• The Lord will drive out the Philistines, Amorites,
Moabites, Ammonites, Hittites, Jebbusites,
Perizzites
- not to make a covenant with them
- tear down their altars
- smash their sacred pillars
- cut down their sacred poles
• the Lord – “The Jealous One”
• “You shall keep the Feast of the Unleavened
Bread.” – God
- “For seven days at the prescribed
time in the month of Abib you are to
eat unleavened bread, as I commanded
you; for in the Month of Abib, you came
out of Egypt.”
• Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) – the
festival of Thanksgiving for the harvest
- Celebrated seven weeks or 50 days
after the beginning of the harvest
Radiance of Moses Face
• Moses stayed with the Lord in Mount Sinai for
40 days and 40 nights, without eating any
food or drinking any water and he wrote on the
tablets the words of the covenant, the 10
Commandments.
• Moses’ skin became radiant while he
conversed with the Lord
- When he finished talking with the
Israelites, he put a veil over his face;
whenever he enters the presence of
 the Lord, he removes the veil until he
came out again.

Book of Leviticus
Brief Description:
• Third book of the Pentateuch
• Continuation of the legislation given by
God to Moses at Mt. Sinai
• The laws contained in this book serve
to teach the Israelites that they should always
keep themselves in a state of purity and
sanctity as a sign of their union with God

• Moses’ aim: to enforce among the Israelites the
Lord’s claim to their obedience, loyalty, and
love
• Events took place in the lands of Moab
• Crossing the Jordan river
