DeepVIV
Vortex Induced Vibrations analysis software

Applications
Flexible risers, umbilical
Production and drilling rigid risers
Hybrid riser concepts including riser base jumpers
Towed systems

Analysis process
A preliminary modal analysis must be carried out
with DeepLines. The modal analysis model may
include complex models with several lines connected
together to properly handle interaction effects.
DeepVIV is automatically plugged with modal
analysis results database produced by DeepLines.
Selection of modes based on mode shapes and
locking criteria is automated.
Current profiles may be defined either from the GUI
or from text files to run series of VIV analyses with
several current profiles
Calculation of steady state VIV response through
energy bnlance for each mode
DeepVIV is part of the marine software
solutions developed by Principia and IFP
Energies nouvelles. The program predicts
the response of marine structures such as
risers and cables to Vortex Induced
Vibrations (VIV). The program uses a
modal superposition approach to derive
the VIV response of the structure in
uniform or sheared currents. DeepVIV is
integrated in DeepLines finite elements
software package and is marketed as an
optional module to DeepLines.
Main features
DeepVIV is a VIV response analysis software based
on modal superposition approach.
Handles both constant and sheared current profiles.
Handles cylinders of non-constant section (variable
diameter, mass and stiffness) and strakes.
Based on modal analysis results produced by
DeepLines allowing to simulate complex models such
as riser towers, flexible and riser base jumpers.
Seabed contact with friction is properly taken into
account through preliminary modal analysis
Automated selection of modes based on modal
shapes with respect to current profile and lock-in
criteria. Low energy modes may be cut off.
User defined Strouhal number
The bandwidth of lock-in criteria on reduced velocity,
the drag and structural damping, may all be user-
defined.
Outputs cross-flow displacement amplitude, RMS
curvature, RMS stress and drag amplification factor.
S/N curves may be entered through DeepLines GUI
to derive damage rates for every current profiles
Modeling of sliding device including friction : J-tube,
guides, keel-joint, PIP
External contact between lines for clashing analysis
Contact with any user-defined surface, either fixed or
moving (soil, moonpool, bellmouth,)

User interface
Convenient model setup through DeepLines GUI, no
need for spreadsheets to define input data.
Current Definition through DeepLines GUI or
external Excel sheet for multiple currents and
associated probabilities.
Definition of Stress Concentration Factor per
sections.
Definition of strake effect per sections.
Static and Modal analysis results (geometrical and
mechanical) available through DeepLines.
Modal shape visualization.
Specific outputs for DeepVIV including displacement,
acceleration, stress, curvature and damage along
the structure.
Automated calculation of cumulated damage for
multiple currents based on Miners rule.

Validation
DeepVIV is validated against comparison with
experiments and numerical results based on the
following projects :
Hydlines JIP : comparison with experimental
results with variable pipe section in constant
current.
STRIDE JIP : comparison with experimental
results from Allegheny TLP risers monitoring
DeepSTAR JIP : comparison of lift curves
through CFD
Comparison with wake oscillator models
Comparison with CFD -structure coupled
analyses
