ABSTRACT
The design of the ducts and the coolers that are in the cafeteria are inefficient as per the
requirements of the cafeteria.Let us first briefly explain the major component of our project.
DUCTS:
Ducts are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) to deliver and remove
air. These needed airflows include, for example, supply air, return air, and exhaust air. Ducts
also deliver, most commonly as part of the supply air, ventilation air. As such, air ducts are
one method of ensuring acceptable indoor air quality as well as thermal comfort. A duct
system is often called ductwork. Planning ('laying out'), sizing, optimizing, detailing, and
finding the pressure losses through a duct system is called duct design.
Ducts materials:
Galvanized mild steel is the standard and most common material used in fabricating
ductwork. For insulation purposes, metal ducts are typically lined with faced fiber glass
blanket (duct liner) or wrapped externally with fiber glass blankets (duct wrap).

INTRODUCTION
What makes an inefficient duct system and what can be done to increase efficiency?
Inefficiency in ductwork generally results from two things: thermal losses and airflow
restrictions. Thermal losses can occur when ducts are not insulated properly, especially if the
ducts are routed through unconditioned spaces such as attics and crawl spaces. Through the
use of insulation with the appropriate R-value for a given application, conduction of heat
orcold from the duct wall can be avoided.
Air flow restriction is a major cause of inefficiency in ductwork. There are many causes of
restriction. Generally, restriction results in lower system efficiency by making the system
work harder and longer to condition the space. The shape and diameter of the duct, the design
of the system, and proper installation are all factors in the efficiency of the duct.

Proper installation is critical to maximizing system efficiency. Flexible ducts must be fully
extended, and only the minimum length should be used to make connections. Bends and
sagging can have a dramatic effect on the efficiency of flexible ducts.

Common problems when installing ductwork:
The most common mistakes when installing ductwork are undersizing the duct, poor
connections that come apart, compressed ductwork, improperly supported bends, and
excessive sagging. Undersized ductwork can cause excessive static pressures, poor balancing,
and noise at the registers. Leaky ducts or connections that have come apart can cause
negative pressures in the living space and can pull in outside air, or contaminants into the
airstream, such as fiberglass strands, dirt, and even radon gas. Ductwork that is not stretched
tight, and that has extreme bends and kinks can have the same effect as undersizing the duct,
causing poor system performance.
Ducts should never be uprising during cooling phenomena, the uprising ducts reduce the flow
of air and thus effect the cooling.

HVAC circulation:
Booster fans are add-ons that help move air through ducts. While inline duct and register
booster fans will not cure underlying defects, they can boost air flow, thus increasing the
amount of cold and warm air that ultimately makes it to a room.
Booster fans are the most economical and simplest to install. These plug-and-play units
replace your existing floor, wall, or ceiling register. They mount flush to the surface, plug
into the wall outlet, and feature a modest internal fan that goes on and off when the HVAC
system kicks in. Some feature a thermostat and multi-speed fan.
While cost-effective, we dont see that booster fans provide a whole lot of success in
remedying the problem, The best solution is adding returns or installing a thermostatically
controlled zone system.

In our project we work on the improvements like:
1) Changing the present design of ducting.
2) Increasing the air flow thrust.
3) Improving the cooling technique of the coolers.

SOME IDEAS ON WHICH WE PLAN TO WORK:

Fig.1
Figure 1 shows one of the type of vent that we are planning to propose in multiples on a
single ducting.
We are planning to study the present ducting system, leakage that is taking place and proper
insulation of the ducts.
We propose to use radiator cooling for the upcoming desert cooler to increase the cooling
tendency of the coolers.
We are also working on better cooling of desert cooler, equivalent to air-conditioner but
cheaper than air-conditioners so that they are easily affordable.

LITRATURE SURVEY
1) HVAC Systems says Ducts are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)

2) The most common mistakes when installing ductwork are undersizing the duct, poor
connections that come apart, compressed ductwork, improperly supported bends, and
excessive sagging. Stated by The news - tips to make ducts efficient
3) Air flow exploration centre introduces Booster fans, which are add-ons that help
move air through ducts. While inline duct and register booster fans will not cure
underlying defects, they can boost air flow, thus increasing the amount of cold and
warm air that ultimately makes it to a room.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Starting from meeting the smaller requirement, we aim to introduce our Indian market with a
new technology of an improved cooler functioning at par with the Air-conditioning units, but
are cheaper than the Air-conditioning unit, they consume less electricity and has low
maintenance.
We are working with a aim to create revolution.
We conclude to work on a project to meet our present requirements of our cafeteria, and
introduce an innovative desert cooler at the cheap cost and with high efficiency to fulfil the
luxury requirement of the cafeteria of having the cooler atmosphere during dry and summer
seasons.
