Level Design Influences of Octo Ink
Rayman Origins

What I really like about Rayman is the fluidity of the level design; no part of any level
feels forced or unnatural. I am also fond of the way the Lums, the collectible of the
game are used to guide the player through the level, but at the same time become a
challenge in itself to collect them all to completely unlock all of the game.
Furthermore, the use of the layered art assets in this game is beautiful.

The Main influence of the level design influence from this game would largely be the
stealth mechanics and how they are implemented through the level design with the
use of lights placed around the level. I also like the way the enemies patrols certain
parts of the level until they become aware of your presence, they are a more natural
obstacle to the player. Furthermore, I like the way there are multiple pathways
around the level and it is up the player how stealthy they wish to be.
Splosion Man and Mrs Splosion Man

Like Rayman I really like the fluidity of how the player moves in Splosion Man, its
similar but Splosion Man is being hurtled across the level and there is little room for
mistakes. When the player does make a mistake there is always a checkpoint very
close that he can restart from, similar to Super Meat Boy but this is much slower
paced compared to it, leaving the player far less frustrated.

Ink Pots


Ink pots are dotted around the level to help
boost Decs ink when he needs it the most,
keeping the game play flowing and more
importantly keeping him moving around the
map.
The ink pots also will work as a sort of guide,
when the player sees an ink pot they know that
they should be heading in the direction of it.
A standard ink pot will refill Decs in to the two
thirds mark.




The larger ink are a lot rarer, mostly because
they will only need to be used in situations
when Dec will need to be in combat and
platforming at the same, he will need a lot of
ink.

Checkpoints
The levels of Octo Ink are designs to be difficult, and players will more than likely die a lot, because
of this there will be regular check points placed around the levels at key points, making sure that the
player gets back into the action as fast as possible. This will relieve some of the frustrations of dieing
a lot.

The Training Grounds
This level starts with the player being woken by Ollie the red panda telling him that the royal red
panda family is in trouble and that he needs to help. It is basically a tutorial level and Oli the red
panda will guide Dec the octopus through it every step of the way.

Canons
Canons are used around the level and them fire a shot repeatedly every half a second, killing the
player.

Training spike Pillars
The player will have to try his best to dodge these pillars as they will again kill him in one hit.

The Bamboo Forest
After Dec the octopus is eventual beaten in the by the Bosses in the previous level he is locked away
in house located deep within the Bamboo Forest, Dec needs to escape and make his way back to
civilisation.
The Jade Family and the evil animal kingdom that are traveling through the forest have started to cut
down the bush to make a path for their troops.

Level Objectives
Introduce the player to the interactive environment piece like the flingable Bamboo
Using stealth abilities like hiding in the bushes
Introduce the player to the Ink Drop
More complex platforming in a different environment that the player will have to take advantage of.

Obstacles
Sharp Bamboo
This bamboo has been left behind by the Dec enemies in
their attempt to create a safe path through the forest; it
is sharp and will eliminate Dec instantly, It will be used in
to create tight spaces where the player has to move with
absolute Accuracy.


Bushes
Obviously throughout the bamboo forest there will be foliage, both along the ground and up in the
canopy of the Bamboo tress, the can be used to Decs advantage. The bushes along the Ground can
be used to hide from patrolling enemies from

Bamboo Fling
At Certain points throughout the level there will be platforms that are too high to reach, luckily there
will be a bamboo tree nearby with some branches that are very useful.
Dec will be able to squirt up to the branch, when he gets close enough he will sort of snap to it to
make the it easy for the player to manoeuvre Dec onto it. Then they can grip the Branch.
Once Dec is onto the Branch the player will tap the branch on the Wii U controller or just hold the
analogue stick down, they then release the stylus or analogue stick and Dec will start hurtling toward
the platform, as seen below.
Dec can also use the Branches to defeat enemies, by dragging them back with the Wii U stylus and
then releasing it when it is in proximity of an enemy.

The Great Chinese Canyon
Declan begins this level in the confides of Ollie the Red Pandas home, whilst there the Red Panda fills
him on where he is and gives him the information he needs about the Chinese Kanyon. Many
followers of the Red Panda family used the Canyon to seek refuge from the evil Jade Family, and
they did it successfully for a while. Once they had been discovered a huge battle broke out where
many lost their lives, weapons from the great battle are still scattered throughout the Great Canyon.
Level Objectives
Introduce the player to a more open level design.
Introduce the player to enemy takeover.
Introduce the sleeping Tiger.
Introduce Sliding along Rope.
Obstacles
Weapon remnants
These are the weapons that have been left behind from the great battle that took place here. The
weapons fit in with the rest of theme of the game in that they resemble the ancient Chinese
weaponry.
They work the same way that the sharp bamboo worked in The Bamboo Forest in that if Dec touches
the Sharp weaponry sticking out of the rock then he will instantly be killed.

Vines
Vines will be used to manoeuvre of the large chasms of the level, Dec will have to use the Ink Run all
that way along it to reach the other side. But he must be careful, enemies and other obstacles will
try to prevent him from reaching the other side, and with Dec moving so fast the players reflexes will
be put to the test here.

The Prison of the Jade Family

Barbed Wire
Barbed wire will be dotted around the level in the same way that the weapon remnants were in the
previous levels. It creates a natural obstacle thats fits in with the prison environment.

Spot Lights
Spotlights will normally be placed around
the level where enemies are. If Dec moves
through the light of the spot light all of the
enemies in the area will be alerted to him
and it will be game over.













Keys
Keys will be dotted around one specific area at a time, Dec will need to
collect all of the keys to move onto the next area and pass through the door that
will be blocking him.

The Great City



The great city is the last level of the game and by now the player should have enough skill for this
difficult tightly packed level with no room for ever. It is set against the back drop of a city and takes
place at night. The player must avoid getting seen by the hordes of enemies at all times, this means
avoid every light source they come across.
Level Objectives
Introduce the advantages of avoiding the light
Introduce lanterns
Introduce Fireworks
Use the skills the you have learnt to master moving around in a very tight
space
Obstacles
Firework
The firework will be triggered when dec moves across certain trigger point
or comes in its line of time, the firework will fizz at dec, illuminating him if
he gets too close. If he does come in range of it, it will explode, thus
exposing him to all his enemies and he will go back to the last checkpoint.

Lantern
The Lantern works in almost the exact same
way that the fire work does except for the
fact that is a static object and does not move.
It serves as a wall of light which Dec will have
to avoid at all costs.
