The Fallen
Many officers have been killed while in the line of duty over the years. Rather it has been
by the most common traffic stop, or being a victim of gunfire. Although all officers are
important, I am going to narrow in on one noble officer and his life, along with the day the sun
set upon him. Officer Brandon Nykari Singler was serving with the Mobile Police Department in
Mobile, Alabama at the time of his death. This officer was only 26 years old at the time of his
death. He also had only been an officer for a short amount of time before he succumbed.
Officer Brandon Nykari Sigler was born January 5, 1983 (www.findagrave.com) in
Mobile, Alabama. He was the product of a single mother, who also worked with the Mobile
County Sheriffs Office. His mother played a key role in his decision to become a police officer.
Brandon attended Murph high school and played football for his high school all four years. He
then graduated in 2001, and then went on to Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi,
where he played football for three years. After his football career was over, he took a break from
the educational world. Brandon then got back into the educational zone and went onto Faulke
University in Montgomery, Alabama and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Criminal Justice
(www.forums.officer.com).
Although Officer Singlers life was short lived, he was a great man and dearly loved by
many people. He was starting to establish himself. Brandon had been with the Mobile Police
Department for 18 months (www.odp.org). Everything in his life was on the right path. He had

plans to buy a house June 8, 2009 and was getting married that following September
(www.forums.officer.com). But sadly things took a turn for the worse on June 2, 2009 at around
11:30pm off of 7700 Thomas Road, at Tyler Ridge Apartments (www.forums.officer.com).
While off duty at his home within Tyler Ridge, where he also served as a courtesy officer
(department sanction assignment which an officer receives rent subside for security services),
Officer Sigler went to investigate a disorderly incident. During this event, Brandon was shot and
killed by 18 year old Richard Hollingsworth. His killer was sentenced to life imprisonment
without parole. Brandon was put to rest in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery
(www.findagrave.com). He left behind his mother, fiance, future step-daughter, and two sisters.
In all this officers death was extremely melancholic. Brandon had worked hard to get to
the pinnacle of his life. But it seems as soon as he reached it, it all went downhill costing him to
lose his life within a split second. Its crazy how in just a snap of a finger you can die without
any notice, but thats life. When youre an officer going home is not guaranteed and only the
brave are able to deal with it. Its sad he didnt get to live his life as a husband and a father and
that his mother had to burrier her child. Officer Brandon Sigler isnt the first to die young in the
line of duty nor will he be the last, but every fallen officer due to the line of duty should be
someone who is remembered because they gave their life in order to protect someone elses in a
way. Officers are true community soldiers.
