2 WATER POLLUTION REGULATOR INTRODUCTION Water pollution is becoming more and more of a problem in New Zealand. As such we have developed a solution through the use of IT. We will enforce a new law to make farmlands have mandatory measuring devices placed into their streams. We will gather data using this new product called the Water Pollution Regulator (WPR) to send data to the farmers through an app to warn them that their streams are becoming polluted. To give them incentive to actually clean these waterways we will also send the data to the Auckland Council so that they can enforce the law against farm pollution. This data will then be used by Environmental Awareness Groups so that they can use live data to educate the public about the effects of water pollution. This will hopefully result in cleaner waterways in NZ. 3. BUSINESS SECTION 3.1 Vision We strive to provide New Zealanders with the means to keep NZs waterways clean and green. We will arm them with the resources and knowledge needed to safeguard our countries once beautiful and clean waterways. We aim to provide a well maintained IT system that has great customer service option so our customers get great value from our products.

3 3.2 Industry Analysis: Water pollution regulation industry Force: High/Low: Justification: Buyer power: Low The buyers do not have that many options when it comes to acquiring the regulators as it is a custom made product. In New Zealand there is only one well known producers of the regulators.(NIWA, 2013) Supplier power: High At the moment there is only one company that creates the regulators locally. (NIWA, 2013) Threat of new entrants: High By law, the farmers only need to have the regulators in their waterways, it is not specified where they need to purchase these regulators from, making it easier for small businesses to enter the industry. (Author, 2010) Threat of substitutes: Low Law dictates that the farmers need to have this product in their waterways. They can try other alternatives as well but they will always have the regulators in their waterways. (Auckland Council, 2014) Rivalry among existing competitors: Low At the moment there are only two main competitors in the industry. While both companies have a similar end goal, they go about it in different ways as seen in their vision.

4 (Watercare, 2010). Overall the water pollution regulation industry is very attractive to get into. This is because there is very little competition, this is seen through the fact that Watercare and our company are the only two active in the industry in NZ and these companies have very different way to go about lessening water pollution. (Watercare, 2010). 3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs Customers: Farmers They need a means to record and measure the pollution levels of their respective waterways. They need it to be a product that can send information to their smart phones directly via an app. The product also needs to be able to alert the Auckland Council if the waterways pass a certain threshold of acidity levels, enough to make it dangerous so that the council can enforce the laws against the pollution of the waterways of New Zealand. (Auckland Council, 2014) 3.4 The Product and Service We will offer them the WPR and for each purchase, a free download code of the app required to run the product. This satisfies their needs because by law they require a product that sends information about the pollution levels and immediately informs them if it passes a certain threshold. Our product functions as it is required to as it sends the info via the app that is constantly updated and has a built in feature that warns them if their water pollution levels are too high. It is also compatible with the Auckland Council system. If they use our product they will be certain that it will be in line with what is required for them to have by law.

5 3.5 Suppliers and Partners Suppliers NIWA- They will supply my company with the water pollution regulators (similar to their pre-existing water quality instruments) that will be put into the waterways and will be taking the pollution data. Smudge- They will develop the app that will work in conjunction to the regulators in order to send data from the stream to the farmers and Auckland Council. Partners: NIWA- Since they are my supplier they will be able to create our water pollution regulator to only send data through our app. This will be beneficial because we can cut off anyone who tries to enter the industry through NIWA as their supplier. Despite the fact that potential competitors can use other suppliers to get their regulators(YSI Inc, etc.), NIWA is the most well-known provider of water quality instruments in New Zealand thus giving us an edge in the market. Smudge- Smudge has a very effective app development team that can help us update the app in accordance to customer feedback. By partnering with them we will be able to have a reliable development team that understands the way the app works. 3.6 Strategy: We will have a narrow market because our main draw is that we have a product that is inline with the Auckland Councils system, so it informs the Council as well as the owners of the pollution levels in their waterways. Our product will be appealing to those people that are required to have the WPR in their waterways by law. We will have a high cost strategy; this is because we currently have no competitors that have have a product similar to ours due to our first move advantage. This gives us an edge in the market as we are currently the only ones that provide this type of product. We will also be providing the product with an addition to the app thus guaranteeing that it is compatible

6 with the Auckland Council. We will also be putting money into maintaining/upgrading the product after we have made the sale. We will have a focused high cost strategy. 3.7 Value Chain Activity: Service after sale is an important value chain activity. This is important because for our vision we said that we wanted to provide a well maintained IT system. To do this we will have to have good customer/IT services that will maintain the product and keep it in a condition that will meet the standards we expect from our strategy. In our strategy we made it high cost so that we can get more money and spend more money into the maintenance and development of the product.

7 3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. PRODUCT MAINTENANCE In this process the customer inquiries about a malfunction in the device to the customer service representative. Then they get passed onto the maintenance team, who, then goes to the property where the regulator/app is and takes a diagnosis of the problem they use the quality management system in place. Then they go off to create a fix for the regulator or a patch for the app and then apply it. This process is important because it lets us apply our service after the sell through our dedicated team that maintains the product. This also justifies our focused high cost approach because the maintenance service is guaranteed upon purchase.

3.8.2. APP DEVELOPMENT We take feedback from the users via a survey/customer complaint etc. that gets processed by the customer service team using the information management system. They then pass it on to the development department to create patches that add new features and fixes bugs according to the feedback. They use the quality management system. Then they send the patch out for beta testing to the community and according to the feedback they either update the patch or release it to the public. This process is important because it allows us to generate improvements to the product using feedback from customers who have first-hand experience with the product. This will allow us to provide service to the customers and let them know we value their opinion. It also relates to our focused high cost strategy because by investing in a good development team we will be able to provide good customer service and thus keep our customers happy.

3.10. 1. QUALI TY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: This relates to the diagnosis function because we are assessing the quality of the product, what went wrong and what we can improve in order to eliminate its problems. By having this system in place we can be able to show that we provide a well maintained IT system. 3.10. 2. INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: This is an important system because it helps process the feedback, showing us what the most common problems are and what aspects of our app needs the most improvements according to the experiences of the users. This allows us to provide a well maintained IT system that helps safeguard our countries waterways. 3.10. 3. TECHNOLOGY UPDATE SYSTEM: This system is in place to assist in the creation of the patches and updates/fixes for the app/regulator. It is integral for the development team to have a good information system in place so that they can create the patch/fix efficiently and in line with the customers needs. This relates back to our vision because we are providing the resources needed to safeguard the waterways through a well maintained IT system.

11 CONCLUSION Overall through the use of Information Technology/Information System I am able to create a business that thrives within the market while also fulfilling its vision. Information Technology and Information Systems are integral to the success of this organization because it helps us takes advantage of the industrys weaknesses in accordance to Porters generic strategies and five forces model and develop a stable business capable of prosperity within my chosen industry.
