TICK TOCK ON THE CLOCK
INTRODUCTION
Poor time management is a problem that affects university students worldwide. With
course work given on a daily basis, students may find it hard to prioritise their tasks or lack
interest due to the increased workload. As a result, students find it difficult to keep up and
maintain work at a high standard. This leads to stress, poor grades and unhealthy lifestyle
habits. Luckily, with the right tools, poor time management can be solved. Our app, On the
Clock, saves time by organising and prioritising tasks for students. Furthermore, the app
connects with the university website and automatically synchronises important
announcements and dates so that the student always stays up to date.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
We intend to make a contribution to the world, by providing the best accessible and easy-
to-use free app that aids university students around new zealand to manage their time well,
so they can have a great university experience.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Time Management Mobile Application Industry
Industry: Time Management Mobile Application Indusrty.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High There are many other free time management
apps available for university students to choose
from. Google play offers over 30,000 productivity
apps that helps users organise tasks. 81% percent
of these apps are free. (AppBrain,2014).
Therefore buyer power is high.

3

3
Supplier power: Low Time management app developers can choose
from many mobile operating systems to launch
their app on. The top mobile operating systems as
of today are Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows
and Blackberry. Therefore there are many
suppliers, which means supplier power is low.
Threat of new entrants: High It is moderately easy to get into this industry as
there many competitors in this industry. Another
reason for why the threat of new entrants is high
because the barrier to entry is low. According to
(Thomas, C., n.d) The cost for making a simple,
table based app is $1,000-$4,000. Therefore
threat of new entrants are high.
Threat of substitutes: Low There are not many substitutes available. Time
management apps can be replaced with old
fashioned schedulers or diaries. Therefore threat
of substitutes are low.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High Rivalry among existing compertitiors within this
industry is very competitive, as there are
thousands of apps available. Most of these apps
are free which attracts a lot of customers. It is
also high because there are so many apps,
developers have to fight to get their product
noticed. (Sutter, F., 2012)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Overall I think that this is not a very attractive
industry to be in because although there is a high demand, rivalry, threat of new entrants,

and buyer power are high. Furthermore, it is very hard to get apps noticed when there are
thousands available.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
The potential customers of this application would be university students who own a
smartphone device.
In particular, this app is aimed at those who struggle with time management skills. Our
targeted customers need an app that will help them prioritise their tasks so that they stay
stress free. According to a survey conducted by Arizona State University, 74.9% of students
reported that they experienced stress during the school year and it was found that time was
one of the leading causes of stress. (Arizona State University, n.d). Customers also need an
app that will help them stay motivated and focused during the school year.

3.4 The Product and Service
On the Clock (OTC) will satisfy the needs of our customers. The idea of this app is that the
app and university website work together. Information from the university website syncs
important dates into the app which is then stored into the calendar. The app notifies the
student when new dates have been stored into the calendar so they are kept up to date.
OTC has an option where it analyses the calendar for important dates and automatically
prioritises the importance of each task.
OTC also allows students to set goals. Students can enter them manually or OTC will
recommend weekly goals based on tasks that are in the calendar. When goals have not been
completed they will automatically be prioritised first for the next weeks goals. Most time
management apps are hard to use and so students lack the interest to plan, however with
OTC it is easy to use and practically does everything for them. This app will help them stay
on top of everything.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Suppliers
A potential first supplier would be Evernote who are app developers for Android,
iOS, Windows and Blackberry. It is important that the app developers can make an
app that is compatible with every smartphone device. We will need them to create,
maintain and update the app when there are bugs and problems.
Another potential supplier would be Google Play or any other mobile platform to
distribute our app.
Partners:
A potential first partner would be the New Zealand Universities. For example the app
can link with University of Aucklands Cecil so that important dates from the
announcements can be synchronised and stored into the apps calendar.

3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost
Competitive Scope- primarily we only focus on university students with smartphones.
Therefore, this is a narrow market competitive scope.
Cost strategy- We offer this app to our customers for free. This app does not require any in-
app purchases. Therefore, it is a low cost strategy.
Therefore our strategy is focused low cost.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology Development
Technology development and research development is the most important value-adding
chain activity. The development of this product is vital if we want to fulfil our vision of
providing an app that is easy to use and accessible. Development of technology will help
lower cost of productions which is important as we offer our app for free. Furthermore it
will improve accessibility which is an aspect part of our vision. (Marsden, O, J., 2004)

3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. MARKET REASEARCH PROCESS- Market Research Process is essential for this start up
business to succeed it helps us identify which market is better to target. The process occurs
before the app is launched and involves gathering data to help determine whether their
product will cater for the customers needs. As this industry is very competitive, it is
important that our product is different and innovative so that we can gain a competitive
advantage. Market Research provides the business with meaningful information that the
business can then use make better strategic business decisions.

7

7
3.8.2. NEW PRODUCT DEVLOPMENT PROCESS - New Product development process is an
important. It ensures that our app differentiates from other apps that are already available
in app markets. It also makes sure that the app is feasible and viable and will satisfy the
targeted customers needs.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. MARKET RESEARCH PROCESS
Analyses and examines raw data.
Generates information report.
3.9.2. NEW DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Identifies best Idea to develop from the concept testing results
Forecasts costs for developing the product
Gives the customers the option if they want to update their app.
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. FINANCI AL MODELLING SYSTEM - The financial modelling system supports the new
development process. It is used to forecast costs associated when developing the product. It
is important that the business can see these estimated figures so that they can make good
decisions and keep costs low at all times. If costs are kept at a low level, then we will able to
off app for free, thus meeting our vision.
3.10. 2. APP SOFTWARE UPDATE SYSTEM - This system supports the new product
development process and incorporates key functionalities by updating the app on a regular
basis. After the product launch OTC will improve the app based on the customer feedback.
By updating the app regularly it will ensure that bugs and problem are solved.
3.10. 3. DATA ANALYSI S SYSTEM - Data Analysis System supports the market research process
as well as the new product process. It does this by the analysing and categorising data that
has been collected from the survey and turning it into meaningful information. A report is
created and to help make decision-making and the development of the new product easier.
