REPERTRIO CORAL EM NOVA VERSO
As edies Funarte de msica para coros assinalam, talvez, a mais importante
realizao brasileira no gnero, desde o esforo desenvolvido por Villa-Lobos nos
anos 1932-1945. Foram lanadas 77 partituras por nossos servios, em sries
abrangendo desde arranjos sobre motivos folclricos a obras originais de
compositores brasileiros de vrias tendncias.
Esse trabalho est intimamente associado ampla gama de cursos de breve
durao realizados em todo o Brasil que foram retomados recentemente e que
visam o aperfeioamento de regentes corais e de coralistas. Essa retomada
didtica necessitava, para sua maior efetividade, ser complementada por uma nova
ateno edio de partituras corais.
Como aqueles 77 ttulos esto esgotados, pareceu-nos conveniente reeditar
37 deles, mas em novas bases. Assim, as partituras dessas obras so, agora,
apresentadas em verso digitada e com mais informaes envolvendo questes
tcnicas e estilsticas. A principal inovao, porm, a distribuio exclusivamente
pela internet com verso em ingls de cada ttulo, em vez das edies impressas
anteriores. Compomos, assim, com a prpria natureza da internet que obriga
internacionalizao na apresentao do contedo, de modo a torn-lo acessvel em
escala planetria. Assim, ao lado dos milhares de corais brasileiros que se
beneficiaro com esse trabalho, dezenas de milhares de outros podero tomar
conhecimento de obras que levam nossa msica a todos os povos.
CHORAL SCORES IN NEW MEDIA
The Funarte editions of choral music mark perhaps the most important Brazilian
effort in the genre since the labor devoted to this area by Villa-Lobos in the years
1932-1945. A total of 77 scores were issued by Funarte, in series ranging from
arrangements of folk themes to original works by Brazilian composers belonging
to various schools.
This work is intimately related to the broad spectrum of short courses taking place
throughout Brazil which have gained new life recently, and which have as their
goal the improvement of choral directors and choral singers. This new start
necessitated, in order to be effective, to be complemented by new attention to
publication of choral scores.
As the 77 titles were out of print, it seemed proper to republish 37 of them, but
working from a new basis. Thus, the scores for these works are now presented in a
digitized form, and with more information relating to technical and stylistic
questions. The chief innovation, however, is the fact that they are now distributed
exclusively over the internet, with a translation into English of each title, replacing
the earlier printed editions. We thus conform with the very nature of the internet,
which obliges an internationalization in the presentation of content, so as to make
it available on a planetary scale. Along with the thousands of Brazilian choruses
which will benefit from this work, tens of thousands of others will be able to get to
know works which will bring our music to all peoples.

Fernandes chose to arrange these five children Native Brazilian songs
because of their beauty and simplicity. She collected songs from the
Xavante, Caraj, and Tiriy tribes. This is an excellent piece to
program for childrens chorus for its musical, cultural, and social
values. It should be presented with background information about the
Brazilian tribes so the students will develop a better understanding of
the piece and its value. The information below was translated from the
composers notes.

1. Canto do Mutum
This is song, collected and recorded by the anthropologist Desidrio
Aitay, is used by the Xavante boys usually in the evenings. They sing it
after they have entered their cabanas (homes) at the end of the day
while eating corn or any other food.

2. Imitao de animais
Recorded by the anthropologist George Donahue, this song belongs to
the Caraj Indians. It is a song that imitates the sounds of animals in a
creative rather than realistic way.

3. Cano de ninar
The Xavante infant spends most of the day in a big basket covered
with hay to protect her from the sun, rain, or cold. This basket hangs
over the mothers back and when the child cries the mother taps
gently on the basket. If this does not help, the mother sings Ma ma
ma, which curiously means daddy, daddy. This song was also
recoded by the anthropologist Desidrio Aitay.

4. Cando de meninas
This chant is sung by the Tiriy girls and was collected by Desidrio
Aitay.

5. Segundo canto de meninas
This song was also recorded by Desidrio Aitay and is sung by the
Xavante girls from the Escola Salesiana do Sangradouro in the state of
Mato Grosso. The girls usually sing it in a large circle, which is the very
essence of the Xavante culture.
