FIRE PROTECTION ATTACHMENT THE
KEY TO A SAFER KITCHEN.
INTRODUCTION
There are numerous preventable deaths and injuries that occur due to residential kitchen
fires. To combat this problem we intend to provide an attachable infrared system that
emits light waves within the vicinity to detect movement and the heat levels of the cooking
element. If the stove is at an extreme heat with no human movement detected for a long
amount of time the stove will be turned off automatically and a sound stimulus triggered.
The device also sends out mobile and wristwatch alerts to warn of the danger.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To reduce human injuries and deaths through smarter cooking appliance attachments.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Fire Protection Attachment Industry.
Industry: Fire Protection Attachment Industry.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power:

Low Buyer power is low, with very few to no other fire
protection appliance attachments in existence for
customers to purchase from.
(New Zealand Fire Services, 2014)
Supplier power: Low Supplier power in terms of fire protection
attachments is low, as in the market there are
many suppliers of the raw materials to produce
the fire protection attachments. Although there

3

3
are not many fire protection attachment
companies already in the market, there are other
fire protection products that use similar sorts of
technologies as our product. Materials such as
the plastic housing and electronic alarm horn.
(NAFED, 2014)
Threat of new entrants: High
The threat of new entrants in the fire protection
attachment industry is high. There are low
barriers to entry into the market as developing
this sort of attachment requires low capital
investment There are also low exit costs.
Threat of substitutes: High
Threat of substitutes is high as there are many
alternative fire protection products in the market.
Alternatives to the fire protection attachment
include smoke detectors, heat detectors, fire
extinguishers, fire blankets and so on.
(Safelincs, 2014).
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low
Rivalry among existing competitors is low as
currently there are few, if not no other
competitors in the Fire Protection Attachment
industry.

Overall attractiveness of the industry: The fire protection attachment Industry looks
appealing for businesses as overall buyer power, supplier power and rivalry among existing
competitors is low. However there is a high threat of new entrants and threat of
substitutes.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs

4

4
The target market includes people that are interested in fantastic fire protection techniques
as cooking fires are still the leading cause of home fires*with+ 43% resulting from
unattended cooking, (Fire Preventors limited, 2013). Of this number one quarter of the
deaths were of elderly people. (Elder, 2014) . This shows the severe amount of death and
injuries in New Zealand homes. As well as the elderly, people that are first time appliance
purchasers wanting to increase safety in the home, as well as those people that currently
have a cooking appliance but want to further prevent kitchen fires would also benefit from
the infrared attachment. The target market is relatively broad, allowing the infrared
attachment to reach out to many people.
3.4 The Product and Service
The infrared attachment fulfills the needs of customers as it targets the core problem.
Kitchen fires occur from unattendance and high cooking heat. The infrared attachment is an
effective way of reducing the quantity and severity of kitchen fires that occurs by
acknowledging when cooking is occurring without attendance and turning the cooking
appliance off as soon as temperatures reach a dangerous level.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Firstly, the most important supplier would be one that supplies the infrared technology.
This could be a company like SPi infrared. (SPi infrared,2014). Secondly, we would
require a supplier for notification technology, such as when sending push notifications to
users mobiles, for example, Notify My Android (nma, 2014) .
A partner that our business could share a mutually beneficial relationship with would be a
fire service like the New Zealand Firefighters credit union. The mutually beneficial
relationship would be in knowing both our company and the New Zealand Firefighters
credit union are reducing the cost in human lives. A second partner would be cooking
appliance businesses like AEG and Bosch where purchasing the cooking appliance with
the fire protection attachment together creates a value for the deal scenario.
3.6 Strategy: Cost leadership

5

5
Our vision is to not earn high profits but to reduce the number of human injuries and deaths
associated with kitchen fires. To reduce the number of these events, we would need to
target a broad market. All people with a cooking appliance would be able to benefit from
our product. In saying so, to reach a broad market, costs will be kept low to ensure low
income households can also benefit from having the infrared attachment. Hence the
competitive advantage is low cost, the competitive scope is broad market, which gives us a
cost leadership strategy.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Make the product or service
The most important value chain activity for our business is to make the product. Our goal,
and therefore the success of our infrared attachment is based on the attachment working to
its description and being able to prevent injury and death. Additionally, as our strategy is
cost leadership, we have to make sure we place as much value on providing a product that
has a universally acceptable design to satisfy the broader market.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. QUALI TY CONTROL PROCESS As making the product was chosen to be the most
valuable value chain activity; a key business process would be to have a quality control
process. The product would have to be more advanced and effective compared to other fire
protection attachments to fulfill our vision. By implementing this process it will portray to
the customers that our product is of higher quality and that we take injuries and deaths
seriously.

6

3.8.2. PACKAGING PROCESS Another key business process included in the make the
product value chain activity is the packaging process. This is necessary in order to protect
the attachment from damage from the time it is created to the time it is installed by the
customer. By implementing this process this will increase customer satisfaction from
receiving an attachment that is according to specification.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. QUALI TY CONTROL PROCESS
Measures quality of attachments to standards.
Acknowledge receipt of finished attachments.
3.9.2. PACKAGING PROCESS

Update order status to packed and awaiting delivery.
Notify delivery department that attachments are ready.
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. PRODUCT ANALYSIS SYSTEM- Since the product needs to be a quality fire protection
attachment to ensure our vision of reducing human injury and death, a product analysis
would need to be implemented. This ensures the customers that the product is of higher
standards as it will analyse our product with a standard attachment that is on mark with all
specifications. This enables us to see whether our product is doing better or whether there
needs to be changes made to the product. This system will support the functionality of
measuring the quality of the attachment to standards.
3.10. 2. ATTACHMENT PROCESSING SYSTEMAs the product contains delicate technology that
is crucial to satisfying the needs of the customer and hence to satisfy our vision, that is to
detect levels of heat to reduce death and injury, an attachment processing system would be
implemented in the packaging process. This system would ensure packaging of all finished
attachments so that customers receive a working attachment. The attachment processing
system would support the functionality of notifying the delivery department that
attachments are ready as well as updating the order status to packed and awaiting
delivery.
3.10. 3. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM An inventory management system would be
used in both the quality control and packaging process as it enables the efficient
management and location of finished attachments. Efficiency in this system ensures
improved productivity and hence reduced costs. The inventory management system will
support the functionalities of measuring the quality of attachments, acknowledging the
receipt of finished attachments, updating the order status and notifying the next
department when the attachments are ready.

CONCLUSION
Having an infrared attachment that is installed onto cooking elements are important as it
will result in less injuries and deaths from kitchen fires. Information systems and
technologies make this happen. By using these effectively we can deliver a product that
achieves our vision by reducing the costs in human lives.
