Why:
DIALux is a free yet powerful lighting analysis tool. It is fairly easy to learn but has some elements that are
not entirely intuitive. Users of AGI may have a harder time learning the program due to its differences but
once the software in learned, performing calculations is quick, easy, and visually rewarding.
What is Needed:
For this simple example, we will use all out of the box content so nothing other than a basic understanding
of lighting design and possibly the physics behind the behavior of light is needed.
Oh yes, and a photometric data file will be needed. Download the file by double-clicking on the icon below.

How it Works:
We will use DIALux to create a simple
20x45 room with standard 80/50/20
reflectance values for the floor, walls,
and ceiling respectively. We will utilize
the luminaire Field Arrangement tool to
get our desired foot candle levels using
the above 2x4 LED Troffer.
Start Dialux, when the welcome window
appears, select New Interior Project. If
the welcome window does not appear,
click New in the file menu.
The Room Editor will always automatically appear first, this is
where the dimensions for the room will be entered. For this
example, use a length of 45.0 feet, width of 20.0, and a height
of 9.0. Then click OK.

It is important to fill out the Project and room information as it is used in the calculations and for
generating the output report. Notice that the upper portion of the Project Manager is dynamic. As
different elements are selected, the tabs and options in this window change respectively. Refer to the
images below for examples.
Be sure and make the shown room property change in the Maintenance plan method tab (.91 LLF is used
because these are LED fixtures which have a lower lamp lumen depreciation). The Room Surfaces should
already default to those shown.

The next step is to insert the field arrangement but we first need to load our photometric data file, in this
case a .sld file. DIALux also accepts .ies files and the below method is the easiest way to load them.
Download the .sld file for the Lithonia 2ALL 4900 lumen 2x4 LED troffer, again it is found above under the
heading, What is Needed. Place it somewhere that is easy to find. The hard part is done. Now simply
click-and-drag the .ies file into the DIALux model window and release the mouse button inside of the room.
This will place an instance of the fixture, surface mounted to the ceiling, where you released the mouse
button. Delete this and well now create the field arrangement for our calculation.
To do this, pick the Field Arrangement button on
the Insert toolbar, or by navigating
through the paste menu.
The properties for the field arrangement are displayed in the Project Manager window. In the Luminaire tab,
select the desired luminaire type and make any modifications to the lamp emittance properties. In the
Mounting tab and the Arrangement tab, there are a few important settings to look at.

Its easiest to select the Arrangement type and rotation
first to make defining the center to center distance in the
mounting tab easier. When defining the distance, think
about typical spacing of the luminaires, especially a 2x4
fixture which will be mounted in an ACT ceiling. Also the
Luminaire mounting is important. By default, this is set to surface mounted and will have to be changed for
any recessed or suspended fixtures. Changing the suspension height to -.25 feet will place the bottom of
this particular luminaire just below the ceiling so that it appears recessed.

Draw a reference line (also found in the Insert tool bar) from corner to corner and snap the center point of
the arrangement in the midpoint of the line. You will notice a jerk in the arrangement as it snaps to the
midpoint.

Click Insert at the bottom of the properties window and the field arrangement will be inserted as defined
earlier. Now to run the calculation.
On the calculation toolbar, or in the Output file menu, click Start
Calculation, review the settings and click OK.
Now that the calculation is ran, view the Single Sheet Output for a
simple yet elegant calculation report. There are many different output
types and setting but those are for another day. Refer to the following
page for the generated report.
