INTRODUCTION
Today most pressing business challenges is How do you transform expanding data volumes into
business intelligence that drives faster and better strategic decisions across your enterprise. As
data volumes continue to grow exponentially, organisations are challenged to figure out what to
do with all the information and the same challenges can also represent amazing opportunities. As
a result of this, organisations like a Teradata form a team with group of experts on how all these
information can be put together in one store and make maximum use of them in making business
decisions. Some of the customers or organisations patronizing Teradata for solutions will be
discussed in the paragraph below.

Teradata Corporation is a leading provider of analytic data platforms, applications, and services
to results oriented Information Technology and business leaders who seek smarter, faster, and
more informed answers to their most essential question. It provides organisations with single
view of integrated data by collecting all business information in one place and users to make
effective business decision. Some of their customers will be discussed in this write up.
TELEFONICA
Telefnica the largest telecommunication company in Argentina is facing problems on how to
integrate a variety of unrelated operational systems into a meaningful data platform. There goal
was to unite all information about process flows from beginning to end and also new customers
coming on board process to eliminate specific issues such as long provisioning times leading to
customer disconnects, the opportunity for cross sell revenues from new services was deflated and
operational groups supported by their own systems and Key Performance metrics were in silos.
Teradata provide solution to the true cause of concern which is the inability to trace and connect
specific processes in the new order work flow which had the potential to cause delays, lost
revenues and dissatisfied customers. Teradata integrate and analyse their data in the following
ways
ENTERPRISE DATA WAREHOUSE (EDW)
Teradata enterprise data warehouse is a unified database that holds all the business information
in organisation and makes it accessible all across the company This warehouse store all data both
related and unrelated ones. This solution controls the existing Enterprise Data Warehouse
(EDW) platforms and data models from Teradata to integrate the previously disconnected
operational systems. New tools, reports and alert mechanisms were also developed to not only
trace the root cause of delays and subsequent customer disconnects, but to anticipate service
level underperformances and potential holdups before they occurred. Performance metrics were
standardized, Business unit accessibility to the new systems was supported by training and the
creation of dashboard reporting tools that end users could access, analyze and use to determine
corrective actions.

BUSINESS PERFORMANCE WAREHOUSE
Teradata Business Performance Warehouse (BPW) is easy to use data warehouse solution built
on enterprise data warehouse. It extracts and consolidates data generated by dispersed systems
and makes the information available in a flexible and powerful format for decision makers
throughout the organization. The major source of information for this is call center, web portal,
salesman and store. The Business Performance Warehouse is tailored towards capturing and
disseminating information whenever queries are been done on sales, billing, billing policies and
some other information related to call center. It gives substantial benefits in the quest for a
competitive business performance measurement system, such as consolidation and integration of
business information, efficient and flexible management of data and readily available
information in a customized format for those who need it especially the sales department.

PING INCORPORATION
PING, Inc. is a highly competitive and profitable manufacturer of custom fitted and built golf
equipment. The organization is marked by innovative thinking and leading edge application of
tools and technology; yet it provides a supportive environment where employees routinely work
for decades. In the highly competitive market for golf equipment, PING needs a system that will
make them stand out as a successful provider of sophisticated, well produced designed products
and effective means of production and delivery in no time.
Teradata, after analyzing their operations came up with improvement in customer service,
efficiency of the made to order business, system performance, processing capacity, support of
mission critical, online transaction processing (OLTP) applications and system scalability.
The use of data mining was adopted to know the capabilities of the solution to determine which
orders to fill first. The production department would query the database to determine which
orders were pending and what materials were available to fill those orders. Information generated
by these queries helped production make decisions about what to commit to production, based on
real time information. In this way, the Teradata system helped PING support its early active data
warehousing effort by integrating the following into their operations:

Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW)
After the building of the open data warehouse architecture for PING, more than 350 users have
access to the EDW, and as many as 200 may use it concurrently. The system runs a custom built
Enterprise Resource Planning system with a variety of home based applications. Using this
software, the system captures sales, order processing, and inventory data in the Teradata system.
Many of these transaction queries run against guides to retrieve a single customer record while
some queries are run against the tables. However, there are no precise data loads; but the
organisation uses its business transactions as source data in its active data warehousing approach,
which creates a mixed workload environment. The warehouse contains only a few tables with
summarized data. Most of the data stored in the warehouse is in third normal form, but some has
been denormalised to enhance performance. The EDW also extends to the supply chain; some
component inventories reside on the warehouse, and it is integrated with the Oracle financials,
purchasing, and inventory applications.

Front Office Processes: Customer care representatives use the EDW to take orders, answer
customer requests for information, generate work orders, process orders through the plant, and
capture work status details as the order progresses through production. This information becomes
part of the warehouse, where it is available to support actionable decisions at the point of
customer contact.
Back office Processes: Employees use the system to capture serial numbers, package and ship
products, generate billing, receive customer payments, and apply cash. It provides data needed to
make credit and collections calls.
Marketing: Marketing department is also a heavy user of the system, generating many ad hoc
requests for information. This group uses the EDW to search for a wide variety of information,
including trends, year-over-year sales results and comparisons, market and regional
developments and patterns, sales performance, and forecasting accuracy.
Production: The EDW activities run against production data in the companys online
transaction processing (OLTP) systems to support real-time decision making by a variety of
users. With all of the companys transactions running through the EDW, the production
departments frequently use the system to run complex queries about component inventories, as
information is being collected. The information generated by these queries helps production to
more efficiently schedule operations, based on available components and specific orders.
Reporting: The EDW create a variety of prepared reports, which are automatically generated
and forwarded to requesting business users.
Enhanced Decision Support and Reporting Capabilities: Information is delivered with sub-
second response time, giving users an instant, single view of the business. This enhanced
corporate visibility supports rapid and accurate decision making. For example, production
planners can use the EDW to track the quantities of a given product that are on order at any time.
Active data warehousing provides real-time information that allows planners to more accurately
forecast demand. In addition, the sales force uses the EDW to receive timely updates of sales
activities, which helps them to work more productively.
Increased Customer Support and Service: Active data warehousing approach allows the
company to more effectively respond to customer demand and to provide more responsive
service. With the Teradata system, users care representatives can make fast, accurate, and
informed decisions about how to take the next best action with each customer. The EDW helps

service personnel provide efficient delivery for club replacements and timely information to
customers about their orders and product delivery. Customers can instantly order club
replacements from a list of millions of product serial numbers. Also, customers can easily check
the status of their orders online.

Reduced Cycle Time: The Teradata system enabled PING to slash its order-to-delivery
timeframe from six weeks to just 48 hours. Using the EDW has also helped PING to eliminate
significant amounts of work in progress.
