Women’s lacrosse entering its second season

Western Riders host upcoming

Cyclists encouraged to join…
The Cycling Club is a multi-
faceted experience. The club is
open to all students, faculty,
staff, and community members.
Anyone interested in the team
can be a part of it, but to race
in the collegiate conference
requires full time student
status. The Cycling Club fields
teams for a mountain bike
season during the fall semester
and a road bike season during
the spring. Weekly meetings
are held in the Mountainlair
during each season.
Cyclists of all skill levels are
encouraged to join the club.
Though the race team is
always looking for new talent,
experienced riders love
introducing novices to the
sport. Throughout the season
the club will organize many
beginner oriented group rides
as well as participating in
cycling skill clinics sponsored
by local bicycle shops. Aside from
participating in these local events, the
club organizes races that are open to
the public as well as our cycling
conference.
WVU Cycling is a member of the
Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference.
Included in the conference are
schools from West Virginia, Maryland,
Virginia and North Carolina The team
long tradition of fielding strong teams
for both race seasons. However, they
have been particularly proficient in the
mountain seasons. WVU Cycling has
won the mountain conference
championship for the past 8 years.
The have also qualified riders for
nationals in both seasons just as long.

The WVU Western Equestrian Team has three
meets this semester. All three of these meets and
their regional show will be on the weekend of March
15th and 16th, with Regionals being on Sunday
afternoon. The Western Team will be hosting these
meets at the WVU Reedsville Farm. So far this year
the Western Team is leading their region in team
points. After their March meet if they are still in the
lead they will advance to Semi-finals as the
Western Team representatives for their region.
Semi-finals will be held in Cazenovia, New York.
The top three teams at Semi-finals will advance to
Nationals, which is in Burbank, California. The team
has several other individual regional qualifiers with
the same opportunity to advance to semi-finals and
Nationals.
The WVU Western Equestrian Team is always
looking for persons interested in joining the team.

Spring Season about to take off for Men’s Rugby
The West Virginia men’s rugby club is looking to capitalize
on the falls season. The men had the best season in the
clubs 36 year history advancing all the way to the Midwest
regional final four tournament in Iowa. The men had a
regular season record of 8-2 losing to IUP and conference
rival Slippery Rock in the championship game. The men’s
club then advanced to the sweet 16 playoffs in Michigan
as a wildcard. At the sweet 16 WVU beat Michigan
champion Grand Valley State and in got revenge defeating
Slippery Rock. The men’s team then advanced to Iowa for
the final four and a chance at the national tournament.
After a 15 hour bus ride the men played ST. Johns of
Minnesota in a triple overtime heartbreak loss. In the
consolation game WVU played Wisconsin losing by a try.
The Spring season is about to begin and the WVU men’s
team is looking to accomplish as much if not more than
previous years. The spring is a great time for new players
or people that have never played to come out and learn
the game as well as make some new friends. The Spring
season consists of friendly matches with out of conference
schools and tournament play. The spring schedule has not
been decided on as of the publishing of this letter but we
know for sure we are traveling to NC to play and definitely
traveling to DC for the Cherry Blossom tourney. Most

importantly however is the year ending Chicken tourney here at
WVU. Practices are normally Monday-Thursday with matches on
the weekends.
They take part in a number of fundraisers that normally consist of
lifting and moving various objects throughout the year. We also take
part in Youth coaching and development, can food drives, veterans
events, and hopefully this year the Special Olympics.

President John Robbins would like to recognize the many great
senior players Chris Lee, Corey Kyle, Brendan Fitzgerald, John
Robbins, Tommy French, Ricky Palmer, Dan Mazur, John
Velasquez, and Patrick Cristy. Without their hard work , leadership
and dedication this team would not be were it is today. Also a
special thanks to Head Coach John Niles and assistant coach Riley
Fell, and the help of Gus Shuler who kept this team on track. A
special thanks to Bruce Brubaker, Jeff Berryman and everyone else
at WVU that supported us throughout the ling fall season and our
Alumni who made the season possible.

Softball looks forward to the upcoming season

The WVU Softball Club has had previous
success at Nationals and hopes to do
just as well during the upcoming 2008
spring season.
The club has practice at the Shell
Building- with indoor practice at 5:00am
and outdoor practice at 6:30pm. They
are part of the National Club Softball
Association, and Nationals this year will
be held in North Carolina’s Team USA
facility.

Paintball makes history at recent tournament

On Saturday, February 9th, the West Virginia
University Paintball team went to All American
Paintball Park in Greensburg, PA for the 2008
Frost Bowl. This tournament is the second
largest tournament of the year hosting 25
colleges from the Northeast Region of the
NCPA (National Collegiate Paintball
Association). WVU, who went into the
tournament ranked 23rd, is a young team that
plays here local at Mountain Valley Paintball
Park just outside of Morgantown. Even
though they are a very young team they have
found ways to get school and private support
from companies.
The caliber of play at the Frost Bowl each
year is very tough. The team decided to
enter two 5-man teams into the pool of 25
giving them a little better chance to place as
the day went on. With 25 teams, the event
coordinators decided to have an eight team
semi-final and then a four team final to
determine the champion. Both WVU teams
played very hard and finished with 6-2

The WVU Ultimate Frisbee Team has been competing in Ultimate Players Association: College Series for
four years. This year the team is looking to place higher than ever before, starting a legacy that will continue
for years to come.

win the WVU Gold team took home first place
and the first championship in the programs

heading to Miami of Ohio University for their
next tournament in March. After that they will
be in Orlando, FL playing in the NCPA

We have competed in tournaments in locations ranging from as far north as New York to as far south as
Georgia. During this spring semester, they will compete in roughly 5 tournaments, against teams from all
over the country, likely including Ohio State, Marshal, Dayton, Carnegie Mellon, and Pitt among others.

Practices will be intensive, and attendance is expected of all members.

WVU Student The WVU English Equestrian Club is

9th for their final regular season meet.

Our schedule for the 2008 semester lasts
from March 9th to April 27th. The club
plays teams from Pitt, Towson, Messiah,
Carnegie Mellon, Eastern Kentucky,
Virginia Tech, Penn State, and more. Our
game fields are in Point Marion, PA. It's a
15 minute drive from campus, so come
out and support the women’s soccer
club!
The club is always looking for girls who
will commit to the team. They are active
on and off the field and participate in
food drives and volunteer at the Ronald
McDonald House. Tryouts are held
during the first couple weeks of classes.
They are looking for players, and love as
many people to come out for the team
as possible!

when the team plays all their conference games. The Spring is for fun and training for the
fall seasons. The Spring season usually consists of tournaments ranging from cities
Columbus to Washington DC.

The team is very active in the Morgantown community. Each semester the team helps to
coach and work directly with the Women's High School Rugby Team. The WVU Women's
Rugby team gains many recruits from the High School team. The team also works with
Habitat for Humanity, mainly participating in their Homeless Awareness programs.
