2:00 pm 3:00 pm A Walk Through History The good, the bad and the ugly is a simple way to sum up
Cambodian history. Things were good in the early years,
culminating in the vast Angkor empire, unrivalled in the region
during four centuries of dominance. Then the bad set in, from
the 13th century, as ascendant neighbours steadily chipped
away at Cambodian territory. In the 20th century it turned
downright ugly, as a brutal civil war culminated in the
genocidal rule of the Khmer Rouge (197579), from which
Cambodia is still recovering (Tony and Maureen
Wheeler).Throughout these centuries, history, tradition, and
culture has been preserved through the handiwork of artists. In
this workshop, take a walk through history and learn about
interesting facts of Cambodian through art, sculptures, and
traditional clothings.

Shadow Puppet Theatre Khmer shadow theater is a form of shadow play in which
leather shadow puppets are used to tell a story. There are two
main genres- Sbek Thom and Sbek Toch. The Sbek Thom
features the Reamker, a Cambodian epic poem based on the
Sanskrits Ramayana epic. The Sbek Toch uses smaller puppets
with a variety of stories. Sbek Por is a genre that uses colored
leather puppets. In this workshop, the participants will learn
about the history of the shadow puppets and have an
opportunity to create their own narrative.

Challenges within Southeast
Asian Communities
Countries in Southeast Asia share interconnected histories of
war and genocide and a significant number of Southeast Asians
immigrated to the United States in the 1970s and 1980s. Many

The workshop will explore issues of poverty and education as
well as other socioeconomic and cultural barriers.
Traditional Paintings Cambodian art stretches back centuries to ancient pottery, silk
weaving, and stone carving. During the Angkor period, Khmer
arts flourished. Much of the stone carving and architecture are
still present till this day. Throughout pre-colonial Cambodia,
arts and crafts were either created by rural non-specialists for
practical use or by skilled artists who made works for the Royal
Palace. In modern Cambodia, many artistic traditions entered a
period of decline or even ceased to be practiced, but the country
has experienced a recent artistic revival as the tourist market
has increased and governments and NGOs have contributed to
the preservation of Cambodian culture. In this workshop we
will learn about the Khmer history of different traditional arts
and crafts. Then we will have an opportunity to create our
Khmer arts and crafts.

3:00 pm 4:00 pm Stockton Oral History
Project
The city of Stockton has the distinction of having the fifth-
largest population of Cambodians in the nation and the second-
largest in California. Beginning in 1975, when Cambodia fell to
the communist Khmer Rouge and as many as 2 million perished
in the killing fields, Cambodian refugees began relocating here
in larger numbers. Once here, they forged a close community of
a rich and compelling people. The stories are horrifying and
heartbreaking, but also full of heart and perseverance, a window
into the human spirit that fights against even the most
unspeakable evil, not just to go on, but to triumph. The
Stockton Oral History Project is not just to highlight the
sufferings of their past but to show the Khmer peoples
remarkable strength, will and resilience the affirmative,
empowering, redemptive story of their history and their present
