J have lust been Informed that the Hunter College Center for Occupatlonal and
Environmental Health's grant proposal to the New York State Department of Labor
Occupational Safety and Health Tralnlng and Education Fund was denIed funding. I am
writIng- to appeal to you to help us reverse thIs dedslon. ThIs proposal would provide health
and safety training for paperworkers who face a high risk of Injury.

The arbltrarv process used thIs year In awardIng grants Is upsetting. The courses conducted
by the Hunter COEH are of the hlghest quality. The services provided In this gram are not
duplicative, since thousands of UPIU members In my region which Includes all of New York
State have yet to recelye occupational healt:J1 and safety training. Hunters prolect will help
employers and union members throughout the state learn how to prevent Inlurles) Including
among those at greatest risk -. newly hired and transferred workers. UPIU Region Two does
not have Its own grant and relies on Hunter College (0 provIde these essential health and
safety services to our members.
